While we still get free national holidays based on Christian events then we are a Christian Country. Until Easter and Christmas are just normal days we are a Christian Country. But we do not force any one to believe in what the Country does so it does not matter. I think the bank holidays will eventually be taken away through, seeing as Christmas Lights are being removed due to budgets and not wanting to piss anyone off I think it will be the norm to work Christmas in my lifetime.

Wow, where to start with this post?

Also - not working at Christmas? Luxury! Whilst I get time off, there are many professions (including mine) that do not get Christmas off.

I saw a real road rage incident the other day. this cyclist with all the gear, lycra, camera etc undertook me, chased after another, cut in front of him and dropped his bike and started berating the driver. I'd already clocked this driver as he'd undertaken me in 2 lanes of traffic and cut in. I wasn't bothered, he looked foreign and totally bemused by cyclist. What I couldn't understand was I hadn't seen anything happen and I had travelled the same route with them.

Tuurns out this bloke does this regularly and posts the videos on u tube. Cept the one he posted the other day where he said this woman had turned across him into a supermarket carpark, it was blatantly obvious she was nowhere near him. The police are talking to him.

Yeah, I saw that video too, absolute bellend.

Massive parts of the Country get the time off and some of them are even forced by not being allowed to open. Sunday trading is also based on Christianity. It is a Christian country less and less but it is.

Can't find it..

Basically, Woman over takes cyclists (relatively safely) then after about 20 metres or so, she pulls into a car park, it's on her side and stuff, but the cyclist is going mental because she should have waited him to pass before she went into the car park or something.

I think he was upset someone over took him.

Do you want it to remain a Christian country?

I am not in the least bit religious so the only benefit to me is the free Holiday. But my 24 hour Tesco being closed on a Sunday after 4 is a pain in the balls many times through the year so if I had to lose a day or twos holiday to spend Christmas and Boxing Day with my family that would be fine.

Nah mate, it's really not.

Nah, it's more of it is, but it shouldn't be.

IE we shouldn't have anyone with an openly religious agenda in the HoL.

When the House of Lords take a Winter Recess I might agree. But seeing as they take a Christmas Recess I am going to go ahead and say that we are.

56% of people in Scotland said they were Christian, and as Gaff rightly says, a fair chunk will be as Christian as I am.

Where do you want to draw the line and distinction of "Christian country" and "not Christian country"? Throw out all holidays, Sunday related shite, any celebrations of Christmas and have those who determine themselves as "Christian" fall below 50%?

I see it as the running of the Country.

IE, religious figures in positions of power because of their religious position.

So in this respect, I consider American a non-Christian country, since they've all (rightly or wrongly) got into their positions of power by telling lots and lots of lies.

Actually, there's very little between politicians and the Church when you think about it.

Try and take xmas off the atheists @soze - they'll fucking lynch you.

It's got nothing to do with christianity - it's to do with tradition - one that predates christianity.

Why do you think christians put christmas at christmastime? It wasn't invented by them - it was co-opted by them and they added their bullshit on top, then re-named it.

I have no problem with calling it a Christian Country and taking the Holiday. I do not think it needs to be taken away at all. But the fact that Councils have changed the Christmas lights to be Festive Light displays leads me to believe it is coming.

The Bank of England introduced the Holidays to coincide with Christian Holidays. It does not matter where the tradition originates or if Christians stole it. What matters to this argument is that The Bank of England and the Government forced people to take Christian Holidays off and it has never changed. The only reason people could not shop on a Sunday until the 90s was because the Politicians did not want people to stop going to the Church.

But I agree with you that Present time for the majority of people has nothing to do with the Christian Christmas or even the Winter Solstice. But it is where it comes from in this country and the reason why I do not have to work so it works for me.

You're basing your argument on "these holidays are christian holidays and therefore we're christian" - so it matters a lot. In fact, I'd say it's the pertinent point.

But it doesn't really matter - holidays are a really really silly measure of whether a country is christian or not. What really matters is if the majority of people are practicing christians.

This report just says "we're clearly not a christian country any more, so lets ensure our ridiculously outdated laws catch up". And good on 'em for it...

And considering one of the authors is a former archbishop of Canterbury calling it a one sided humanist report is a bit absurd (called that by CoE)

You'd expect that tho - it demeans and diminishes everything he's devoted (wasted) his life to...

Cracks me up that if you want to see proper Christmas in a mall or shops don't go to UK or USA, come to Dubai. Even the locals love it and use the excuse that Hesus was the second most important prophet. :)

Most over the top Christmassy place I've ever seen was Singapore, and they're mainly Buddhists! I believe the Japanese go nuts for Christmas as well. You certainly don't have to be a "Christian" country to have Christian holidays.
