You might as well post something about asbestos based on the relevance of what is going on there (and storage of old crap generally vs modern nuclear power and research.

Not really sure what facts in the article you're disagreeing with?

All it's doing is describing a shocking and, frankly, criminal state of affairs.

None really, just a remark based on your idea that all nuclear is bad.

I don't think anyone disagrees that old tech is bad and what is left over even worse but stopping nuclear energy now isn't going to fix that.

Didn't want to have that conversation again. Just wanted to point out what a shitstorm we've got ourselves into. But if you insist, from that article:
And the problem is just going to get worse. When plants are decommissioned in the future, waste will still be sent to Sellafield. ...And with a new nuclear plant about to be built at Hinkley Point in Somerset, the amount of radioactive waste headed for Sellafield may grow.

We still don't know how to deal with waste - so making more is a bad idea - which is my view on nuclear - if we knew how to deal with the waste I'd be all for it. But we don't.

Anyway - still a terrible state at Sellafield. I was reading about it a while back but wanted to wait until a respectable source covered it. It's only come out because an anonymous whistleblower spilled the beans about the dangerous state of affairs there a while back...

Nothing like Sellafield will ever happen again, you can't judge an industry by a testing and dumping ground for half the world that stopped decades ago.

As long as we don't have the ability to deal with the waste then what else is going to happen?

Solve that problem and build shitloads of reactors IMO.

At first, I was like WTF NERD THIS IS SO STUPID

Now I respect the guy, and want to be the guy.
Yeah, the "don't try this at home" bits... I feel that there wasn't enough emphasis there. SERIOUSLY DON'T TRY THIS AT HOME.

There is never going to be something to do with the waste over burying it or shooting it into space. But the waste isn't going to add up to a large amount so putting it in a grave somewhere isn't a bad thing.

It's been said to you before but I'll say it again: 1) You can't shoot it into space - apart from the fact that it's way too risky (~5% of rocket launches fail) we simply haven't got enough rockets to remove that tonnage - or we'd be on mars already in our hundreds. 2) No deep geological storage facility has been successfully created so that's pie-in-the-sky at the moment too.

You have already made your mind up that all options aren't good enough. All I said was at the moment those are the only two options. I didn't say they were fool proof or completely safe. There are deep caverns made in the uk to deal with waste.

My opinion would be to take a geologically temperate island somewhere and dig a big hole and put them there, for every country. Then research something to do with them. But there is no solution at the moment except to put it as far away from humans as possible .

You only bring it up as an excuse to face palm anyone who says anything. However it has a small impact compared to what we use atm. And gives us a cleaner alternative if you believe the carbon greenhouse arguments.

No @Moriath - the shoot it into space thing isn't an 'option' at all. It's just some bizzare fantasy.

The deep geologic storage thing is still being investigated but it's proving much harder than we have ever thought.

This isn't my opinion - those are facts.

Exactly you ask the question or pose the problem to which you know there is no current long term solution.

So stop trolling and accept that the amount of waste is tiny compared to the energy it produces. And the temporary solutions are just that.

Nope, it doesn't say showing your opinions is trolling here guys.

What Scouse is saying is correct, as a species we're just increasing our energy use on a yearly basis (India have promised to increase their Coal usage 5 times over the next 10 years or something.)

The problem is that we won't accept that we have to cut down, and it won't happen, and because money is more important than the state of the planet, we'd rather risk killing ourselves with radiation than thinking about the reality of our energy use and/or investing everyones last dollar into 'green' energy.

Cause capitalism reigns. And if the economy is even its stagnation. If it falls it's recession. I have said it before we can't grow infinitely. But that what a capitalist democracy demands.

We have to use nuclear to keep it going. Unless there is a revolution where all governments decide that equilibrium is acceptable then the whole world will strive to have what the 1% do. That will always end in disappointment because the planets resources can't sustain that.

I just came up with a really good conclusion for my essay on Marxism.

Marxism is that grandad that gave you some good ideas, but he's a bit of a nutter and a passive racist, so you don't want to see him again.

So tonight is the planetside world record.

It's not the PS2 server I'm really bothered about, they've got some random clans TS3 server and going to throw 1300+ people onto it.
