The dates of historical events is a general knowledge question..it belongs in a pub quiz not in a questionare to see if you understand Britains history and culture...1917/1918..oh fuck got it wrong..ah well only one year out from 2000.
Well, you should know that sort of information anyway as common knowledge, and you REALLY should know key dates such as WW1 & WW2.

Since you're the one that's prepared to vote in a fascist political party to remove any people that aren't British, I'd expect you to know all the major conflicts that the British army went through to protect your British ideals. Yes.

Wait a second now... are you saying that Britain didn't take part in world war one?
I got the year wrong, not that i don't think WWI is important, but because i could care less if it ended 1917 or 1918, i just know that it ended in early 1900. Now, if i was to apply for a British citizenship i would make sure i knew those dates.
Also, celebrating and putting on a big show for the 100th anniversary of the ending of WWI, one year to soon, would be pretty embarrassing. ;)

August 4th. And it ended on 11 Nov. Which is why that's Remembrance Day. But the start isn't really a memorable date because all the countries were declaring war on each other over the course of a week, which is much more important than the date itself as it showed the domino effect of all the alliances.

Whether you like it or not, certain dates are part of the fabric of society; 1066, 1939-45, 1914-18, 6th June, 11/11. If you're American, July 4th, December 7th, September 11th.

EDIT: Actually, let's make this easier for you; i agree that if you're american then independece day etc would be something you'd be expected to remember, same with WW1-2 dates for British/US, but it does not include the whole world and even still, you're not of lower IQ if you just don't remember everything.

Fair?

I am with Thot here. When I was studying history and taking an interest I remembered a lot of significant dates. Now 14 years later I remember very few of them.

The argument about whether people should forget is a different matter. I might not remember it all year round but we always do our minutes silence and i buy a few Poppies every year so it is not like I don't care. But if you asked me what happened on the 28th of June 1919 off the top of my head I doubt I would remember anymore.

That isnt a fact that could measure your intention or enthusiasm to be part of a country culture...I bet less than 50% of young people would know that date.
It's an irrelevant pop question thrown in to give the impression the test needs knowledge of European history..remembering exact dates is for nerds.

Reminds me of the quote from Farenheit 451
"Give the people contests they win by remembering the words to more popular songs or the names of state capitals or how much corn Iowa grew last year. Cram them full of noncombustible data, chock them so damned full of 'facts' they feel stuffed, but absolutely 'brilliant' with information. Then they'll feel they're thinking, they'll get a sense of motion without moving. And they'll be happy, because facts of that sort don't change. Don't give them any slippery stuff like philosophy or sociology to tie things up with. That way lies melancholy."

You clearly don't understand the point I'm making, I'm not saying you're dumb, I'm saying it's a disgrace that you're so bothered about keeping brown people and people from eastern Europe out of this country, which should have a certain degree of nationalism with it, which in return should encourage you to know the dates where vast amounts of British soldiers lay down their lives for you to try to defend your Country.

I, personally look at different wars, and evaluate them, because that's what I do as a history student, in my idealistic world, there wouldn't be such mundane things as borders and states, because they're a thing of the past, states and borders allow there to be a top-down order of things, always headed by the weakest people.

So because lots of people are pig-ignorant we should just should just invite more pig-ignorant people in to keep them company?

the citizen application slip should be this simple: how can you contribute to our society and why did you choose this country?

Sure, if you're fleeing from war you should always be able to apply for asylum. If you're here to freeload, steal and not abide our laws and rules, then kindly fuck right off.

15/20 just not good enough. I blew the history ones. all the subjects I used to teach.
The Viking one should have specified a battle!!
Am I the only one who calls WW1 the14/18 War? a bit of a clue to the dates.
They would be better off being able to speak clear concise English than be able to pass an exam in History. Well maybe both.

.
Where the fuck do I say that?
And the main way to honour the lives lost is to remember the date, I was simply saying those questions are stupid, they are the kind of questions you can just look up on Google, they must give them an idea what they are going to ask because no asylum seeker could possibly know more than a few of those questions, I should imagine they have the information in book form during the test or let them have another go.
My ex girlfriend took the Canadian citizenship test, the questions included 'what day do the bins get collected in the town you are proposing to move too, who do you pay your taxes to, who do you ring if you are injured, what's the number for the police.
Roughly how many people live in Canada, how was Canada formed? What's the capital city? how would you get yourself a job?.
Not what year exactly did something happen.

I take great delight in that I have finally binned Vodafone. Fucking dreadful network - dropped calls, shit data, woeful coverage in areas they're supposed to have good coverage (on both an iPhone 5 and Nexus 5, so it's not the phone). Going SIM only with Three - unlimited data (including 4G where available), unlimited calls, unlimited texts for £26 per month on a rolling one month contract.

Fuck this 24 month bullshit in the ear.

I worked the TCO of an iPhone 4 when I got one - was substantially cheaper to buy it outright, put a SIM-only deal in it, run it for ~18 months and then sell the phone for around one third to one half what I paid brand new.
