Apart from the United Kingdom, Elizabeth II is also Queen of Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Jamaica, Barbados, the Bahamas, Grenada, Papua New Guinea, the Solomon Islands, Tuvalu, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Antigua and Barbuda, Belize, and Saint Kitts and Nevis, where she is represented by Governors-General. The 16 countries of which she is queen are known as Commonwealth Realms, and their combined population is 128 million.

British Empire

The British Empire comprised the dominions, colonies, protectorates, mandates, and other territories ruled or administered by the United Kingdom, that had originated with the overseas colonies and trading posts established by England in the late 16th and early 17th centuries. At its height it was the largest empire in history and, for over a century, was the foremost global power. By 1922, the British Empire held sway over a population of about 458 million people, one-quarter of the world’s population at the time, and covered more than 13,000,000 square miles (33,670,000 km2): approximately a quarter of the Earth’s total land area. As a result, its political, linguistic and cultural legacy is widespread. At the peak of its power, it was often said that “the sun never sets on the British Empire” because its span across the globe ensured that the sun was always shining on at least one of its numerous territories.

It was the largest empire by landmass covering 33.7 million km2 (1922)
It was the largest empire by population.
It had the second largest GDP size of $683.3 billion (in 1938) after the US in 1945
It had the largest percent of world GDP 35.9% ($399 billion out of $1,111 billion in 1870)
It had the largest military of all times.

To Quote The Wolfe Tones,
"Come, tell us how you slew
Them ol' Arabs two by two;
Like the Zulus, they had spears and bows and arrows;
How you bravely faced each one,
With your sixteen pounder gun,
And you frightened them poor natives to their marrow. "

Duh, you don't make Empire by asking nicely.

I'm not sure if you're trolling...but if you're not then your superiority complex is about on par with a Liverpool fan. Pity worthy.

"Big country shit on indigenous people"

Pretty much the history of the world, Cerb. I don't see that as trolling.

David lloyd George's grave, the prime minister of Britain in 1922, in effect the head of the largest Empire the world has ever known at the height of it's size.

It was just an unmarked boulder for years, till someone built this monument.

I also think it is fair to say that as impressive as the British Empire was, it was largely built on the back of the slave trade and the exploitation of defenceless people.

Yeah, praising our "once great Empire" is fucking stupid and something you want to distance yourself from. Atrocity after atrocity all in the name of "England" and "Christendom".

In a couple of weeks, The Queen goes from the 3rd longest reigning British monarch to the 2nd, behind Queen Victoria.

By far the greatest triumphs of the British Empire is that I don't have to bother learning a language no matter where I go.

Except Glasgow.

Hahaha, no it's not at all, EVERYONE was at it, you can't look back and go, ooo, look at them, they did this, they did that, that long ago, everyone was at it, everyone was at a race to get the biggest empire going, It's just that, we won...

As for the 'we would be speaking dutch', there's our biggest achievement, America, Canada, UK, Australia, many other countries, what's their main language? - English, Isn't that an achievement, a tiny little Country off the coast of France has spread around the world, where so many Countries speak english, as much as its annoying that when you go on holiday, everything is English, just for you, it's also an achievement at the same time...

But what makes the UK different to the other ex-empire owning countries? - Commonwealth Games, why would the games be organised, why would ex-commonwealth countries have such close relationships with the British if we treated them so drastically badly?

Don't forget that potientially milllions of British people gave their lives for this Country and I think it's such a shame that so many people turn their back to our might, because of the negative side to it, if we didn't do it, we would have lost World War One and World War Two, easily, and imagine one country running the world, imagine the atrocities there.

In general, I respect all the great leaders of countries in the past, I may get a few raised eyebrows for this but; Hitler? - Jesus, the guy took a Country that was in ruins, unthinkable debt, and turned it into a such a power that took over Europe, this doesn't mean I support the autrocities he caused...

Just because "everyone was at it" doesn't make it right. That kind of arguement has been used to justifiy the inexcusable for millenia.

And no, the spread of English around the world isn't really something to be proud of. The countries that speak English as a first language are the ones where we helped instigate some unspeakable atrocities’ in some cases to the point of genocide.

Yes millions of people did give their lives for this country in the first and second world war: in the name of stopping the very kind of atrocities’ which we ourselves where committing for centuries before - the Boer War or the Crusades for example. Politically motivated wars aimed at expanding the empire while using spin to fool a gullible populous.

As for Hitler, his achievements where impressive, but again based on fooling a population and creating an atmosphere of fear where questions simply couldn't be asked. In the end, because of his ridiculous ego, hundreds of thousands of German soldiers died simply because he literally refused to retreat in any way. He was a poor military leader with a no real idea of how practical his ideology was. He was an excellent spin doctor though, I agree there.

Sorry I didn't mean to imply they were, I simply used it as an example of England commtiting attrocities (in the case of the crusades, on and off for two hundred years), in the name of expanding English influence abroad, while using in that case christianity as a political tool to justify some very unpleasant things. The empire was based on exactly the same mentality.

It wasn't just England who were involved in the crusades. In fact it was mainly the French with the endorsement of the pope.

Indeed, and it also secured Richards holdings in france with the backing of the church and a great deal of influence within the church.

I meant that it was the norm to do so, people shouldn't be so scared to have pride in their country and their country's history :|

I'm not scared to have pride in British History, we have achieved and invented some astonishing things, but the empire and earlier history isn't really anything to be proud of. In fact, some rather recent history, such as the Irish famine isn't something to take pride in either.

To get to where we are today some horrible things have been done, but horrible things are being done everyday even now.

I'm proud of what we achieved.

it has always fascinated me how different the same history is taught in different ways depending on the view point, when i left school in denmark we were learning about the vikings, mostly their trading routes, the inventions they used at sea and navigation skills and boat building etc

when i got to the UK you learnt about the barbarian rapist from across the sea... then in the UK we switched to the civil war and Oliver Cromwell, he won that war then "went to ireland for while before coming back" and that was that...

then i moved to Ireland and boy do they have a lot more to say about Mr Cromwell than just "he visited for a while" ;)

It really depends what you're being proud of specifically.

Are the Italians proud of the Roman Empire ? I've seen Spartacus: Gore and Tits and I know that there was lots of cruelty, murder, slavery and oppression but this was balanced out by a tremendous record in war and Lucy Lawless lez-offs. Mixed bag really.

Nearly every empire in history has got there through excessive imperialism, and damn the consequences.

What's been funny since WW2 is it's the USA's turn now- and in the glaring spotlight of modern day media, its not quite so easy to get away with it.
