To be fair, it's not ALL vile is it.

And name me a country with a 100% lovely rainbows and gumdrops history.

What vile history is that mate? We did bad things, we did good things, but it all has to be considered by the opinions of the day.

You sound like an apologist, I'm not ashamed of our history at all - quite the reverse.

Alexander the great was pretty frigging impressive, he was younger than me when he was in charge of one of the largest empires ever, he killed quite a few people and you're not blattering on at the Greeks about that?

Peter the great pretty much modernised and turned russia into a heavy weight empire with control over a massive area and pretty much kicked the arse of anyone who got in his way but you're not going on about those meanies the russians are you?

Darius of persia...aka Darius 'the great' (really? jeese originality please!) later followed by his son Xerxes (who wasn't 12 foot tall and heavily in to body piercings...) was another one who lead a great empire, squishing those who got in his way.

I could go on, and frequently do tbh, but I shan't. My point is that throughout history empires have been made, it is what we (people) do.

I just gave you the BIG examples there too, but it happens all the time in a much smaller scale, in Africa and America native tribes used to beat the snot out of each and frequently develop mini-empires of their own, British ancients used to all battle and chiefdons would all wage wars over what would be considered the same amount of terratory needed to house a small national park, it's always occured at varying scales.

No one makes an empire by strolling over to a neighbouring country and saying 'Excuse me old chap, mind if we step in here? ta everso!' Though some empires have more violent histories than others, but...look at it now, where are Greece, Russia, Persia, Rome etc etc, all those once great empires, what did they become?

Look at England and the British empire, OK so everyone blathers on about how the country has gone to shit but really, we're still up there at the top of the world's 'people to be listened to and not fucked with', we are still a major influence in matters military, political, artistic, cultural...so we're not massive and we came about it by using force but we kept it and maintained it, which is a damned sight more than most other empires.

That's my two cents...now I am going to go take my historical ignorance and depart this thread before one of you boffins comes and knocks me off my soapbox.

I was merely sending up the retard who thinks the Commonwealth Games is a genuine positive from our slave-based occupations. I don't really give too much of a fuck about history.

I'm with you there. I have nothing to proud about... what did I do to shape the history of Britain and therefore the world? It is impressive what such a small island achieved, but that is in the past. We need to look to the future and what we as Individuals can do.

edit - Spoil your ballot papers tomorrow. It's the only sensible thing to do.

Commonwealth Games is a celebration of our relationship with former Commonwealth countries, lmfao.

There is nothing wrong with having pride in your countries history. I am extremely proud to be British and English, we have given the world a hell of a lot.

Yes we did some bad things but name a country that hasn't.

Being proud of your countries history is one thing, celebrating it's Imperialism is another.

Unfortunately, its difficult to separate the two. One thing people tend to forget about Europe for most of the last five hundreds years was that you either had an empire, or you ended up as part of someone elses. Switzerland is literally the only European country that breaks that rule. So if the British hadn't created an Empire, we couldn't have remained "free" (I use the term loosely).

Ireland's particular problem was that the English started imperialism practice here very early on and Ireland never had the unity or independence to get an empire of its own, but the Irish shouldn't kid themselves they'd have been any different to the English or any of the other European empires given the opportunity (the Scottish certainly had a go at Empire, but made a mess of it so badly they had to get a bail out from London and subsequent loss of independence. No where have I heard that one recently?)

LOL at the Scottish attempt, I saw it on Coast and it seems they set off with more wigs , clay pipes, bibles and trousers for trading than anything else and kinda shacked up in an area allready claimed by the Spanish with no way of defending it.
The usual was behind it though, the English promised to back them up but as soon as they sailed, turned to each other and said 'fook that!'

The English advised against it. They were at war with France at the time (as usual) and didn't want any complications with Spain, and the East India Company lobbied hard for England to pressure Scotland into giving up the idea. They even set sail from Leith to avoid getting stopped by English warships.

It's all very debatable, but certainly Nelson's defeat of Napoleon led to the British Empire and to the spread of English values (though it was Welly who finished him off).
Still I rate him as greatest Englishmen evah and you should salute when you pass his monument, they don't make them like that anymore.

I completely agree, he fought for the pride of his country that he shared with people from that time, but now, people just don't give a fuck, it would be interesting to see if we went into a huge war with a country, and conscription was introduced.

Basically, we'd be fucked :)

I wish I could peer into an alternative universe to see what the UK would have been like if Hitler had invaded successfully and occupied. Predictions?
