I prefer the original of Cal's sunflower to Aoami's edited version. I don't think it needs anything Cal, maybe cropped in a bit more.

Right, slightly off-topic. Does anyone know a decent online retailer for film? I specifically need some medium format stuff for my holga, which I've dusted off.

;p Thanks by the way Cal, I've used them before, but I'm out of touch these days.

Any other retailers I should try outside of them and jessops?

I went to St. Pauls today... The sky was great. I'm just writing a new post for my blog for the Occupy London protests.

I can let you know if I like them, but that's not a measure of whether they are any good or not. :)

Here's the camera I picked up

and a few lenses

The white lens is a EF 70-200mm 1:2.8 which lets you take stuff from up close and really far away I think the guy said.

How did you decide on what to buy? Was that all purchased new?

I'm calling troll, if you didn't know anything about it you might ask for the advice before you bought it all. If all of that - Canon 5d (assuming mk2), EF 50 f1.2, EF 180 f3.5 and EF 70-200 f2.8 IS (assuming mk2) - was bought new you're knocking on the door of £6k (at least).

And that last sentence about the 70-200 doesn't sound like the more tech-savvy ECA that I've seen posting here before...

Assuming you're not taking the piss with us...

The white lens is the one Deebs wanted but couldn't justify. It is a beast, very heavy and you should be able to get good zoom out of it, taking pictures of things quite far away. Take it to the zoo or something.

The small lens is a 50mm f/1.2 which would be good for portraits and general fuckery. I would probably put your aperture at f/2.8 or something while you get used to the depth of field. You will get massive bokeh (blown out backgrounds) but the plane of focus will be really thin so you might miss the focus a lot, even the distance between the tip of someone's nose and their eyes will make the difference. I used to use mine a lot when doing street photography as it as great in low light. It is a fixed length lens, so it will teach you the most about composition. You can't zoom with the lens; your legs are the zoom.

I don't know too much about the 180mm macro lens. Apparently you should be able to take close-ups of things.

Is the body a 5D mark 2?

How much did you pay for it all? I assumed you got it all second hand or off the back of a truck.

Either / or, this is probably the wrong thread for it all...

It is a mk2, the "EOS" and "5D" are spaced differently on the mk1 and the mk2. I have the 70-200 f2.8 IS (mk1) and it is probably my second most used lens behind the 17-55 f2.8, for walkaround stuff. It does hurt your neck after a while though. :\

Don't hate. :(

(I wasn't sure cos we can't see whether it says "mark 2" or not because the lens is blocking it so I had to check)

I don't use the strap. I look touristy enough without it.

I also think that we need a 'General Photography' chat thread because we're cluttering this shit up with too many words. I'll make one in a minute and hopefully the mods can move all the chitter chatter bar the critiques to that thread?

There's already a couple of threads for chit chat... the camera nerds one or "yet another dslr thread".. just dig one of them up.

Not sure which of the photo threads is best for this question but here goes.

I've only recently started getting into photography. I've got a Canon 550d with the following lens:

50mm
18-55mm &
75 - 300mm (which is a beast to get a non blurred image on max zoom as it doesn't have a stabiliser!).

I've recently ordered a tripod and the Cokin Gradual Filter Kit - the filter kit is really just an impulse buy to see what affect is has on my photos. I think that's going to pretty much be my standard kit, with my next potential purchase being an external flash (and further down the line a wide angled lens).

Anyway my question is what kit do you guys use as "standard" when out and about - do you take an array of lenses / filters or just pack for the area you're heading to. Also, can anyone recommend a decent bag for the equipment i described above?

Plus random photo for the thread:

Stop your whining bitch! Soon we won't be on VB but in the meantime let me go play....

PM me the exact problem you have with test urls I can play with etc.
