Arse licking basically. Regardless of whether the original picture was any good.

Edit. It's actually the foundation for the art world.

Not to mention a couple of my solid gold bullshit shots made it onto Explore and the Flickerites waxed lyrical about them when in actual fact I took a shite photo that through some sheer stroke of luck made it onto Explore.

Call me self-deprecating if you wish, but I'd much rather the stuff I was proud of got feedback than my shite that made it onto Explore.

Nope. Once you get a fanbase on there, they gush over any old shit. I'll usually go on to the SomethingAwful forums if I want some proper critique, however more often than not I'll just upload whatever I like regardless of whether anyone else likes it or not.

That said, it seems there's a huge userbase on Flickr and I just assume that anyone who likes my crap on there don't really know what they're looking for. A lot of the time it is just networking, and people hoping you will check their own work out. I must admit that I've looked at a few pictures from people who comment and found some awesome photographers.

I realise that everything I've written above is a massive contradiction, so to surmise; Flickr; meh.

I can balance out the comments on there if you like. Your firework photos aren't my favourite and I can say so to see how the Flickr community reacts ;)

Well, you either like fireworks or you don't :). I can't be arsed churning out long exposure wide angle after long exposure wide angle - it repetitive, it's overdone and (as you say) people gush over them because it takes a little bit of knowledge and specialist kit to be able to do it. Once you can knock 'em out ten a penny, they get dull. I'm all for doing something new at the moment.

Do some street shots :)

I'm doing photography firstly to give me something to do and to entertain myself. I'll keep doing a certain style of picture as long as it entertains me.

Just out of interest, what is it you don't like? Composition? Subject matter? Just 'meh' for fireworks?

Fireworks pictures are all the same!

There was one that I nearly liked but that was because it was a picture taken from a cliff or something overlooking some sort of seaside village. You could see the sea, the lights from the village and the fireworks. It was almost cool.

Or maybe I'm just a bit of a grouch.

Yeah, people can be a bit eager to praise on there. But it's better than having about 0 views, at least people are seeing and enjoying your stuff. I haven't networked much on flickr and as a result a total of about 3 people must see my stuff when I upload, and they're all probably on here. :D

Oh, and don't get me started about fucking photo re-posters. They replace an image with exactly the same image to push it to the top of your "new uploads from contacts". Some of them even do it three or four times, fucking irritating.

I really can't be fucked uploading to a million groups just for views. I'm joined to groups that are actually interesting to me and probably just the most popular group of that 'genre'. I'll accept if someone asks me to add it to a certain group though, but I have no desire to join the "Protests and political bullshit" group.

I more care that people I know are viewing my pictures, so mainly people on forums that I actually interact with.

I wonder if we'll get through a whole page without posting a picture.

Flickr Explore is probably a mathematical thing: http://bighugelabs.com/faq.php?section=scout#2.

"Photos are automatically selected by computer according to a secret algorithm called Interestingness. Although the algorithm is secret, Flickr has stated that many factors go into calculating Interestingness including: a photo's tags, how many groups the photo is in, views, favourites, where click-throughs are coming from, who comments on a photo and when, and more. The velocity of any of those components is a key factor. For example, getting 20 comments in an hour counts much higher than getting 20 comments in a week."

Interestingness... they were really scraping the barrel when they chose that name. I suppose it does what it says on the tin though.

That is a crime. Horrendously overeverythinged.

I fail to believe how people can compliment it on any level. Least of all the "colours" ffs.

It makes me want to cry a little. The shot itself is composed to a decent level, and then utterly shat on by the worst PP I've ever, ever seen. It's hard to tell from the PP whether the original shot would be something worth looking at, it detracts that much. Disgrace.

It's so fucked up by the faux-HDR they've applied I can't even find it in myself to compliment the composition. If they used 3 bracketed shots (and I doubt it tbh because there's not much going on in shadow and highlights) it looks like they just clicked on the oversaturated preset and then ramped the saturation and vibrance up even more. :(

That's the issue with Explore; the sycophants want a piece of the action so flood it with false praise that further fuel the shit-photography-fire.

That is so unbelievably crap.

Gah you didn't line the centre pole up with that door Clown, otherwise perfect symmetry. :)

In all honesty, I'm really clutching at straws this month. I'm not entirely happy with this; it nearly has symmetry... but that's about it.
It's my first winter as a hobbyist photographer. Is it always like this?

Gah. It's just fucking shit. I can't save it.

It's a straight shot. Is there something to be said for an abstract of, for example. just the heating grills?

It's better in black and white, it's shit in colour.

Can you increase the contrast in the b&w one?

Any chance of sharing the raw? I'm with Chet, needs some more punch in the way of contrast

The raw is probably the reason it is shit. If I took the photo properly I might have had more leeway to fuck around with it.
Not being motivated to take pictures at the moment is the reason I'm not taking pictures properly.
It's all fucked up!

RAW.

Milou, these are the closest I got to abstract shooting. It's not my thing so I didn't try further.

I like those abstracts clown.

Interesting to see that the 550D is blighted by the same vertical "corduroy" banding that impacts the 7D. Canon better do something about that in their next APS-C sensor.
