Cheers @babs me old sweet cuddly bumpkin bear.

Honestly @MYstIC G I don't know what the fuck this is, it feels like something I have never had before in my life. Waves of mental light headedness even when my eyes are closed. I have just had a sleep and feel *slightly* better but just no go at all. Scarlett Fever is going around my sons school but apparently adults don't really get that, I dunno. Took my blood pressure and that's good, got no migraine sneaking in *but* I am on Toprimate now (anti epilepsy drug) which is to stop my migraines and a side effect of them is dizziness, but I am a couple of months in on the treatment so why now. Meh, fuck knows.

Got a big box of geek in the other room and an empty house and I truly do not have the energy to even think about messing with it :(

Many here know a damn sight more about medications than I but perhaps yours has a lead in time and is just now hitting you with the side effects. Consult your GP and all that fella.

To encourage the build... Think of the big screen pron that you're missing out on...

So I've been lurking this thread a bit, but I'm looking to go for a smaller build to however my budget is slightly lower anything close to £500 or lower preferably after looking around online Ive come up with:

http://uk.pcpartpicker.com/user/Matt_B/saved/zWWfrH

**CPU** | [Intel Core i3-4130 3.4GHz Dual-Core Processor] | £76.79 @ Aria PC
**Motherboard** | [ASRock B85M-ITX Mini ITX LGA1150 Motherboard] | £71.69 @ Overclockers.co.uk
**Memory** | [Corsair Vengeance 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3-1600 Memory] | £61.45 @ Amazon UK
**Storage** | [Crucial M500 240GB 2.5" Solid State Drive] | £78.10 @ Aria PC
**Video Card** | [EVGA GeForce GTX 750 Ti 2GB FTW ACX Video Card] | £119.70 @ Scan.co.uk
**Case** | [\*Cooler Master Elite 120 Advanced (Black) Mini ITX Tower Case] | £34.33 @ CCL Computers
**Power Supply** | [Corsair CX 430W 80+ Bronze Certified Semi-Modular ATX Power Supply] | £35.82 @ Amazon UK

| | **Total**Prices include shipping, taxes, and discounts when available | £477.88

I have external storage and a decent monitor already, just wondered what peoples thoughts are on the parts, I looked around and the CPU/GPU are popular budget choices the RAM and SSD are just there for performance as it will be much better than my current PC (which will probably go to my mum).

I found a pic of someone else using the same case but in a diferent build but this is generally what I want....

I'm sure mine wasn't much over £500 @Madmaxx or is that just something I will tell the wife?

@Madmaxx if you go up to a Micro ATX case instead of Mini-ITX you can have my barely used Gigabyte H87M-HD3 + i3-4340 (fitted with retail HSF) for a good price plus postage (bear in mind it's coming from France).

I've just asked you this on FB @babs you work shy troglodyte (or are you on a break?), does Windows 8 and Windows 7 (server) not get on with each other? Can connect to a shared drive on the server but cannot get into the folders within that drive although they are all shared. No problem through Plex and other streaming programs just can't do it through windows explorer.

Edit - Shit! I best go pick Samm up, she *really* won't understand me being late picking her up if the reason is geek stuff

No ... I got it pre-built in the end as I'm a proper lazy fucker. It is actually ready to rumble. OS installed and everything. I was going to get it OSless but the deal on a pro license was good so I thought 'fuck it'.

Have you added users in the sharing properties but and added 'anyone'?

Plex and others use upnp and stuff so aren't reliant on the same security stuff.

Yes chum, 'anyone' is and always has been ticked for everything. It bloody connected to all the folders last week when I was setting it up I'm sure. No massive problem right now, it will be because it will eat away at me, I know this, but right now I just want the things sorting that I got the HTPC for (games, streaming etc).

I am thinking about doing one of these mainly for media but also can run Windows on it. I have seen this case http://www.quietpc.com/st-fc8-evo which looks great but it will not be cheap. The Case, Power Supply, Heat Pipes and Remote will hit about £250. A Mother Boar, I3 and some memory will be about another £200. It will end up costing a fair bit but hopefully will last a fair few years as it will just be a media PC mainly.

I have not bought anything yet. But it needs to be fanless and have an IR port there is not a lot of choice when you need these two things.

The Intel NUC isn't fanless but it's very quiet (apparently) and has an IR sensor.
The Intel case is actively cooled with a fan. Silent PC Review note that “The original Intel NUC had "the distinction of being the quietest fan-cooled mini-computer we've come across." The NUC D54250WYK [Haswell-based], with the same cooling system, sounds exactly the same. In normal use, you can't hear the fan until your ear is inches from the unit.

The NUC with the Akasa fanless case is my other option. I am just going to see what parts I have left laying about that could go in the other case. And the fact it has a ODD is another plus point.

I could buy this and if it is too noisy then buy the fanless case the price difference between the board and the whole machine is about £20.

Intel Wilson Canyon Core i5 4250U NUC Barebone £275.94
DDR3L 1600MHZ 8GB 1x204 SODIMM Unbuffered £57.24
Crucial 240GB M500 SATA 6Gbps mSATA SSD £90.32

@soze our build is very *very* quiet. I simply couldn't believe just how quiet it was. I was going to have an Intel NUC until I read about the issues they apparently can have (USB booting problems etc).

Soooooo, how's HTPC Plex @Trem ??

I am undecided @caLLous . Went to watch something I had recently downloaded the other night and it wasn't there (yes I know about the updating library option etc) so I ended up using XBMC. If it was faultless I would prefer Plex by a mile for how it looks and plays stuff but in all fairness I haven't really had a proper fiddle yet (f'nar). So exhausted every night and I simply have no time, tomorrow should hopefully give me a couple of hours.

How recently? I have mine to automagically update when it detects changes in the library but it seems a bit flaky so it's set to check everything hourly as well.

The movies on my Plex server have gone so fucked up that only a manual update will find new films. Automatic and Scheduled do nothing. I have SB tell Plex to update for TV shows but I think something got messed up when I moved my install from Windows > FreeNAS > Linux > Windows. I should reinstall it but I add the movies to the folder manually so hitting refresh is not an issue.

I got a tv show about an hour before I wanted to watch it and it wasn't there. It isn't just me then? Honestly lads, I am struggling to see the loyallity to Plex right now apart from the slick interface.

Honestly if you don't use a shared library or want to stream your media remotely. And you already have XBMC and shares set up I see no reason to try to learn Plex.

Because I love @babs and @caLLous and I promised them I would try it :D it does look lovely, although I do get the feeling it is trying to be a bit too smart sometimes, or too fancy when there is no need. It is like it is trying to be the most polished turd out there.
