Some people are fucking miserable about this whole thing tbqfh.

Wait 3 years to watch the trilogy on a TV rather than a big screen? No thanks. Personally I don't need to see the WHOLE book ASAP and get it over with ASAP. Part of what I enjoyed about LoTR was that the experience was drawn out and lasted beyond one fucking movie.

I don't care what reviews say, they're frequently bullshit - make up your own mind then tell us what you think. Rather than just pessimistically speculate.

I may be a little bitter as I'm on night shifts and can't watch it for days :(

Even if IMAX 3D is an integral part of the experience?

The film may be shit - but I'm going to give it every chance...

Have to agree, sat through the film and not once did I think, "padding, boring or what is this shit", totally enthralled and immersed and was kinda fucked off when it ended, cannot wait for the next installment.

I really thought he did a good job. I went late for me and after a week of travelling (and travelling today), normally a sign that at the first hint of padding ill sleep... Not a chance. Absolutely loved golum and bilbo scene!

That scene was just awesome, the riddles, the two sides of Gollum. Loved it.

Would be interested in hearing the opinions of people who don't love the book.

Sounds like from reviews and fan opinions that it's a shit standalone film but if you like the book (a lot) then you'll like it.

Well that's obvious going in.

It's only 1/3rd of a story. The opening act. Of course it's a shit standalone film.

- the first LOTR film is too. It doesn't have a "beginning, middle and end" - it's just the beginning.

Even if it's just 1/3rd of the story, it does need to stand alone in parts. Much like say, empire strikes back is a good stand alone movie, even if it's part of a duo.

Well if memory serves, in the book, the troll bit was so drawn out they turned to stone.

The difference here is that Star Wars was written for the silver screen. It's a "pure" movie as opposed to an adaptation of an existing story. They can fit the beginning, middle and end structure into a film so it stands on its own.

Adapting just the beginning of a book and trying to make that have a proper beginning, middle and end is nigh-on impossible. A lot of the reviews acknowledge this. It was also a complaint I heard from a lot of (thick) people about the first LOTR movie.

"It doesn't have a proper ending". Well of course not you fucking retard!

Like Yoni I've not read the book in like 30 years either. I did think it stood alone pretty well. There was obviously more to come at the end of the film, but that was a good thing.

I never go to the cinema. Last thing I saw was Master and Commander, and I only went to that because I'm a huge fan of the books.

The reason I went to see the Hobbit was becuase my kids paid for a meal and then go see this film as it was my wifes birthday, and when they were little, 10 years ago, we took them to each of the LoTR film when they came out, so I suppose you could say they were continuing the tradition :) All the same, I'm a miserable sod and was quite expecting to be bored shitless. But I wasn't, I was really impressed. Not even sure about the IMax bit, but I really liked the film. Go see it make up your own mind.

Only the shit seats left in my local HFR IMAX, so I'll wait until next week to see it, when the proles are all at work :)

The point was that even as a part of a story the experience of watching that part of the story has to stand on it's own. The source material has nothing to do with it as it's not given that people have seen it.

It doesn't need an ending per say, but it still needs a good ending to that part to hold up.As an extreme example it can't just end mid sentence.

Empire strikes back doesn't have a proper ending, it leaves everything open, but it still holds up as an individual movie that you can pop in.
