it means he's a good player that makes other players raise there game, it's been clear to see for 10 years that when he's not playing, Liverpool have no drive, Beckham used to be the same for England like against greece when he was just everywhere.

I know you hate Liverpool and you're a single minded fuckwit, but try to undestand this.
Not everyone agrees with your bullshit. Get over it. Just cos everytime a decent, inspirational Arsenal player apears they upsticks for more moneis doesn't mean those players don't exist.

What the fuck are you talking about?

I was rightly criticising an awful cliché that is used in football that actually has no meaning at all, other than completely subjective nonsense. If you're going to put forward arguments for a player to do anything, it's better to do so in terms that actually mean something - not repeated clichés from the mouths of commentators who are too lazy to do their jobs properly.

It's not a cliche, it's a metaphor.......

picking somthing up by the scruff of the neck is both controlling and dominating it.

pretty simple.....

Then why not say "he's capable of controlling and dominating games" instead of "he's a bit like a mother cat. picks up her young by the neck, moves them, then licks their arses clean" ? :)

Talk in football terms, not bullshit terms. Fuck the awful terminology that means nothing and is perpetuated by lazy hacks.

I'm with Scouse on the Torres/Carrolll tansfer, the fee was all dependant on how much Newcastle wanted for AC, Liverpool in effect swapped AC and Suarez for a total spend of about 7 million of their own cash + Torres. I think that's a bargain!

This.

I remember when Gerrard soloed Hungary after England went behind and he scored twice in 5 minutes. Ive never seen a player take the game by the scruff of the neck like he that and lift the players around him so much. That is why Gerrard should be captain.

Does this all the time for Liverpool tbfh.

Predictions for tonight then?

I reckon we show a lot of 'passion', plenty of 'commitment', pump the ball forward from the back and lose 3-1.

If you'd watched him enough you'd have seen him do exactly that many many times.

It's quite amazing to see the effect a single player can have on a game when he "gets it on him", so to speak.

He won't do it for england tho. He thrives on the responsibility being captain gives him. It transformed him at Liverpool and his best games for england was when he was captain.

Boring 0-0. But I will still watch as for some reason I have unwavering blind faith in England.

Because we're English and that phrase is part of the English language? It is an example of an idiom. You, however, are an example of an idiot. Note the difference in the spelling.

When was the last time he did it? This isn't 2009 any more.

... and my point was exactly that? That we have far too many bullshit phrases making up the language of football. All it does is muddy issues, if we talk about football in football terms and don't transfer irrelevant phrases then we get down to the reality of it, not the fiction of it. Commentators and journalists want to provide fiction (it provides narratives and interests - the things that keep news stories GOING), fans IMO should talk about football as a sport as we're not trying to gain readerships.

But please, do try and teach me about the "English language." I'm sure you have more to teach me about it than a whole university degree on it.

It was just a phrase i applied to a situation that actually happened. I wasn't trawling through newspaper archives and picking random sensationalist headlines suggesting why Gerrard should be captain, it was just something I remembered and the phrase was fitting.

Did you really use that expression when attempting to argue against the use of idioms in football? At least your English degree helped you master irony.

What's wrong with it? I'm not talking about football, I'm talking about language. If I'd been talking about football and not language you may have a point - but as it is your shout of irony is one that is completely misunderstood. Which seems to happen to you a lot.

If football were as cut and dry as you make it seem Wazzer then it wouldn't be half as interesting. The reason we use intanglible phrases like that are because the intangibles of football are what make it so fun.

That's a fair point. I'm not trying to make things cut or dry or black and white, I'd just rather bullshit phrases that don't actually mean anything were avoided, as all it does is cause grounds for miscommunication (due to the subjectivity of such phrases). Why use them when you can actually say what you mean and everyone will 'get it'? :)
