That's a fair point. I'm not trying to make things cut or dry or black and white, I'd just rather bullshit phrases that don't actually mean anything were avoided, as all it does is cause grounds for miscommunication (due to the subjectivity of such phrases). Why use them when you can actually say what you mean and everyone will 'get it'? :)
It's an interesting discussion. In a lot a ways I agree with you so maybe what I'm doing here is trying to offer a possible justification of using phrases such as that one. A lot of it comes from lazy journalism too. Why bother coming up with a new metaphor or even describing things simply when you already have some that "fit"?

The best justification I can come up with with requires me to paraphrase a line from Pratchett: "Cliches are the like the hammers and screwdrives of language", we use them so often because they do the job so well.

Have I even made a point here? Who knows or cares....

I wish ITV would stop broadcasting football. I nearly didn't bother watching it when I saw it was on ITV.

Am I now the only football fan who thinks left footed players should play on the left and vice versa?

It looked like Huntelaar whas missing a couple of teeth :x.

Anyways about the 1 - 0. This is why we should be playing 4-4-2, instead of having to choose between Huntelaar or van Persie. But we are the Netherlands, so we have to play 4-3-3. :(

Do the England players look before passing? Or just kick it and assume someone is where they hoped
