Thoughts Turamber? I wonder how much this has to do with spending limits and the amount of money he'd get back from Milner?

I just heard! Absolutely shocked, could be a long hard season ahead of us now :S

I am struggling to get onto the fan websites because of traffic but my initial thought is that Lerner must have backtracked on previous promises. I'd imagine that O'Neill has been told he couldn't have all of the Milner cash to re-invest in the squad, or maybe that he wants to sell Ashley Young too. O'Neill was previously on record saying he'd walk if Young was sold.

Not sure what managerial talent is available that we could realistically get at this stage, especially without a pot to piss in. Not good news. I wonder if I can return my season ticket? Very upset with the club indeed.

O'neil really does strike me as a manager who will never be happy unless he's at one of the top clubs with a big budget. He's clearly not happy to settle for what he has at Villa. Could not be worse timing for Villa though, who the hell are they going to appoint? You can't really blame this on Lerner, I think the realities of running a business that makes money to survive have stopped investment, obviously O'neil wouldn't see it that way.

He said at the close of last season that he'd be happy to stay, as long as he had say in which players were sold and was given the funds to re-invest. He also made it very clear that he saw Ashley Young as a 'must keep' player.

Whatever his faults he is an honourable man and I can't imagine he'd walk unless promises were broken on the owners side. Incidentally Lerner has a record of appointing useless managers for his American Football team.

Pretty much seems that the thoughts are it's the attempted sale of Young.

Yeah, like gohan, I find your comment makes no sense.

Might of been the period just before that, irc the same time getting dumped out of Europe. I also remember not being that impressed with certain games in that list, seeming more like we got lucky at times.....could be wrong however.

As for O'neil I suspect the problem was selling various players and not getting any or very little of those funds to reinvest. Now I also remember some internal issues being reported last season thus when you combine the two he could easily see it as being setup to take some sort of blame in the first half of the new season.

According to one Villa fan forum poster who posted O'Neill had resigned nearly an hour before it broke:

"Lerner wants £30m cash.

O'Neil and City wanted £15m, Michael Johnson, Steven Ireland and Needam Onuha (sp)"

That would be a stonking transfer for Villa if that had gone through, Milner is good but he's not worth those 3 players. Can easily understand O'neils frustration if that was the case. Even if he was given half the money, he'd never be able to buy those players.

O'neill is an over-rated manager. Imo Villa should have been acheiving more than they have been with the team they have got.

Only team, along with Man United, Chelsea and Arsenal to finish in the top six in the last three seasons, despite having nowhere near the pull for players or the financial clout.

He undoubtedly has his limitations, but he is an excellent manager.

No impression in Cup's though. Also, there must be a reason why their league performances have tailed off so much over the season in those three years. O'neill made his name with an average Leicester side, who performed slightly above average, then won everything with a Celtic side who quite rightly, with the team they had, demolished everything in their path domesticaly. I think his reputation is too good for what he has acheived.

It's a shame Hodgson has already gone to Liverpool because he would be the perfect man for the job.

How much more could he have done for Villa, they don't have the pulling power or the money to match any of the top4 clubs, some of his buys were suspect, but he did a good job for them nevertheless.

Big word around the campfire is that his wife has fallen ill again. All the best to them if so.

Martin Jol might be a good bet if Lerner has the funds to prize him away from ajax

edit - just seen that he's the favourite for the job lol

Yeh, a final and such is little impression. Hes one of the better managers out there and quite a humble one at that.

If he pays £8million to buy Jol out (that's what Ajax asked Fulham for), then Jol will have no transfer funds. He wanted out of Ajax because of a lack of funds, I don't see it happening.

UEFA Cup/Europa League is a crap competition; reserves competition at best. You have to get to the final stages to pay for the travel costs!

Very interesting. Does he have much of a history of club management?

We will get a B or C list appointment. Somebody to take the flak from the fans as our crown jewels get sold off. From top six to bottom six, but how long will it take?

Villa mate thinks this is because the American turned down the transfer over wages, all 3 city players are reportedly on over £30k a week and signing all 3 would double the amount of wages freed up by Milner leaving. So basically even though its a brilliant transfer the American did not think it was affordable.

If that is true its hard to pick right and wrong there IMO.

I'm sure that is part of it, plus O'Neill had been promised the cash from the transfer to sign targets and this was reneged upon. I'm afraid there are very few top class managers who would stand for the owner going back on his word regarding transfer funds and interfering with the manager doing his job.

Mark my words, we will get a second or third rate manager who will allow the owner to sell off Ashley Young, Agbonlahor, maybe Dunne and Cuellar too, whilst replacing them with Wigan-esque cheap foreigners untried in the Premier League.

Not what I had in mind when I bought my season ticket this year.

Since i'm bored.. do one of these.

Team: Wolves

Expected position: 15th-17th

Where you expect them to finish: 15th

Where/what you need to strengthen: Not really anywhere that does need strengthening, with the signings we made we covered the holes of last season, with Kightly and the return of SEB we should have enough about us to push on and stay up. Maybe continue persueing Mancienne could be an option however.

Who would you like to realistically sign: Mancienne

Overall hopes/expectations: Another solid season of secure ourselves as a topflight club, and doing the double over the sh1t. If we manage to finish in a decent mid-table position (10-14) i'd be over the moon.

Team: FC Copenhagen

Expected position: 1-2.

Where you expect them to finish: 1st.

Where/what you need to strengthen: Our offense. We've got 2 quality strikers, but our only sub right now is a 16 year old :< he's a massive talent though.

Who would you like to realistically sign: Nikki Bille.

Overall hopes/expectations: That we make it to CL. We've got two matches against Rosenborg left, so it's probably 55/45.

To add to the list it has been reported that Arsenal are sniffing after Super Brad.

And it could be worse we only have 3 Central Defenders and 1 of them has no premier league experience and the other cant play a month with out needing 3 months off lol
