BBC News - Togo footballers shot in ambush yeah aoln, it's pretty bad, serious injuries reported.

I remember a week ago hearing how all the national teams would be under armed guard at all times during the cup of nations, I guess not eh?

That is fucking shocking I wonder what it will mean for the ACN i bet a lot of club coaches want their players out I know i would.

http://soccernet.espn.go.com/news/story?id=722453&sec=global&cc=5739

Players named and the driver is dead. GSI Pontivy goalkeeper Kodjovi Obilalé and Vaslui FC defender Serge Akakpo.

Ooooooo dear. Togo will pull out now i would've thought, and I wouldn't be suprised to see a few other nations do the same.

Driver of the bus dead apparently.

Yeah its shocking, raises more questions about the whole competition.

Very worrying considering our 2 best players are out there.

Also Arsenal can't steal our place, they need too many points. Also Birmingham are a good side:p

wasn't it last year (or two years ago), where someone tried to shoot down Martins with a machine gun in Nigeria?

Yeah I know arse could only go one point behind you, and I said pressure because I know Brum are good :)

As for the ACN, raises questions as to why it's being hosted in Angola at all given the problems there.

More on the shootings, updated bbc article states:
The bus was travelling to Cabinda from the squad's training ground in the Republic of Congo when the shooting happened.
"This was an act of terrorism," Cabinda affairs minister Bento Bembe told Reuters news agency.
Competition officials said they had not known that the Togolose team had decided to drive directly to Cabinda.
They said they had expected the squad first to fly to the Angolan capital, Luanda, and from there to Cabinda.

Sounds like the officials are trying to allocate blame to the Togo FA for not telling them their travel arrangements. It still strikes me as completely irresponsible to let them travel by bus without a guard.

Artical on ESPN says they had 2 guard Vehicals hence the 15 minute shoot out rather than just bus boarded and everyone dead.

Yeah, I realised they had after I read that goal.com article, the rebel group behind it say they warned the CAF that they were entering a war zone and not to hold games there. They also say they have more attacks planned for the tournament :(

Some moron on the 606 message boards calling for the competition to be played in another country. Should be scrapped altogether really -- and less politics in the selection of venues for future tournaments. I hope similar things don't happen in the World Cup, but with the history of crime and violence in South Africa one has to wonder.

We have to "liberate" Yeman first.

There isn't enough oil in Africa for the US to care about.

officials will state that it Togo FA fault, because... it was. They chose to be there.

Rules state that teams should FLY to the country of competitions, not drive by bus. They opted to drive through a country that has insurgance rebels fighting against the country and didnt take precautions.

It was absolutely thoughtless action and I can only guess that Togo was trying to save money from not flying.

Landon Donovon with his first assist for Everton. 1-0 to everton from a corner.

I'm actually annoyed arse are losing. I have varmealen in my fantasy team, one of the few players that will actually score points with all the postponements today :/
