Anyone here do this for a hobby? Or know anyone that does?

I found a dead fox yesterday and brought him home on way back from work; was in good condition and so I called a guy I knew who does taxidermy but today it was all maggoty and so nothing to be done. Anyway, I am hoping to decompose the fox (buried it under compost) and have some bones for display on my nature shelf and was wondering if any of you knew how mong it takes to decompose an adult fox (luckily its warm) and what is the procedure to clean the bones... B2 would kill me if I boiled them in his cooking pots.

Any one know these things?

PIcking the fox up to bury it in a decent location, fair enough.

Taking it home to rip bones out of it or having it stuffed...dude...seriously.

what? what?? Beatrix Potter used taxidermied animals for the illustrations in her tales of peter rabbit, it is not unusual. I also have spoken numerous times about my hobby of fossil collection, exactly the same (just not as um...juicy).

Taxidermy, nothing weird.
Fossil, that's old old bone, collecting. Nothing weird.

Picking up a fox carcass and dragging it home to get it stuffed or de-boned(i know i hope it worked with women too)...?

First, kill it yourself. Then you've got the right. Now you're just degrading the dead.
Second, it's not sanitary, you can catch death from those things. Literally. Not just a figure of speech, actual death.
Third, ...the f*ck?! :D

Ah righty ho so it'd pass the toht OK test if I went out and took the life of a living creature just to display it? I think not baby puppy! dead things are dead things, trust me I know I have worked with dead humans I know they don't care; still treat them with respect though because even though they don't care I do (be gentle, don't bash about, even talk to them).

The sanitation thing is correct, which is why I didn't touch it and still washed my hands thoroughly after handling the bags. The man that came round (the taxidermist man who deals with these kinds of things all the time btw) was no alarmed at my behaviour...what some people consider unnatural others do not and had no misgivings about my safety.

thirdly, as I say it's a hobby/interest. Natural history and nature is something I love and am really into, some people spend ages poking about on cars I like to go look for interesting stuff: fossils, snake skins, antlers, shells, beetle carapaces...found a dead moth the other day and it really is lovely, I have it in a display case...is that a problem too?

I was asking for information with this thread...not "hay folks, judge me please!!" it's the way I roll, what flips my switch doesn't for others and what does for others doesn't for me. I'm ok with that.

Then you wouldn't mind me grabbing your dead family member from the morgue and putting them on display?

Ripping out the bones of a fox to display them, after dragging the dead thing half across who knows where and after giving a no go on stuffing it to display, is not respect so don't even go there.

If you kill something for a purpose, i'm ok with it.

If you kill a fox, i'm hard pressed to find a reason as it's a predator, so the meat ain't that good, but fur is a valid option i guess. But at the very least if you're doing something like that to an animal, have the gall to kill it yourself and especially not whine on other thread how some kid kicking a bambi to death is cause for bashing their heads in.

They may have killed a deer, but you're a vulture.

Mistake there, it's a judgmental place :p

There's no anti-fox shots.

They do give you pills when you go cuckoo in the head and start picking up roadkills though.
