It's late, and I probably shouldn't ramble, but oh well - nothing better to do.

But, does anyone else ever stop to really think about the game? I mean, really think about it.

Yes, there are things wrong with the game from any given classes' perspective. But there is so much Mythic got right with the game that people gloss over in their minds, because they see it every time they log in. Take, for example, Aladora's 'When' video (DL here http://camelot.stratics.com/movies/Aladora.shtml if you've not seen it - I can guarantee even the more worn down players will think a little on watching it). Coming up to the gates of Camelot for the first time... seeing the sprawling towers across the skyline from halfway across Camelot Hills...

I think my personal favourite memory has to be the first full suit of armour I crafted for another person. Took me a while to work out what materials I needed, and how much they cost, and finally a little while longer to actually craft the 6 pieces.

And then I handed the items over to their new owner, who dressed themself in front of me (Really wish I could remember who it was now :( ). I was so proud seeing a person walk around in a suit of armour that I had made from nothing, I ended up giving them their money back.

And the first time I ever led a successful keep raid with a group of irregulars in Thidranki. The thrill of seeing Albion's colours flying above the keep gates because of the effort I and one or two others had put into getting everyone together, rams ready for use, and organising the mob into a well ordered machine... it was worth it.

OK. Ramble over. Carry on.

(PS: When was the point you decided you liked the game enough to carry on playing? I think the armour bit had to be mine)

I must totally agree... I was pretty much amazed when I first entered the world of camelot... I still remember the day when I dropped into Humberton as a level 1 fighter.
I often do stop and really THINK about the game... I do realise how good this game actually is and generally I enjoy every minute of it. Aladora's videos are truly good and this is no exception... it gives you a nostalgic feeling...
I remember the days in beta when even level 2X people went into emain, then there were the few heroes that many thought were so powerful such as Khaine the Armsman and Eleasias the Mercenary :)
Believe me, I often do think about the game... I think it gives me just this bit more motivation and respect for the game. I recommend it to all.

The initial Novelty of the sights and sounds wore off once I hit about level 42 and had to endure the slugfest that was Malmo. Until then we had our closely knit team of Head Hunters (Then Bloodlust) including Styx, Cuba, Stormsteel, Raenolf, Spear, Hoster, Xtro, Shaz, Bombadil, Zchez and myself. We would play a lot together in predominantly guild groups and I can say I enjoyed every minute until around level 43/44. We had travelled from Muspelheim to Varulvahum, to SPindlhalla to Vanern Swamp to Rauamarik as , ....well as a fellowship and it was great. It was a real adventure, seeing unseen lands, tackling never before encountered monsters, aquiring treasures of ancient armours and weapons, magical rings and necklaces. But most of all, building a strong friendship, it was the very essence of our guild today, that lasting bod keeps Head Huneters going strong at its core.

Since those great days I have been saddened by the departure of some of my guildmates I came to call true friends, Hoster especially.

Beyond that day came the enduring evil of the long hard and quite frankly dull and boring slug to 50. Without a doubt the levels 43-50 are the worst in the game, the time it take sand the dull repetetive pulling of the same mobs in the only viable place.

It sapped the excitement and adventure out of the game during those long cold dull nights in Malmo.

The relief was evident, along with the joy of hitting 50, because now it was the time for Combat, for Realm vs Realm combat to be precise :D The first few weeks of being 50 was amazing, the battles in Emain were not as they are today, ie the Zergs, they were skirmishes, they were tactical, they were challenging yet fun and rewarding. I spent much time on my crafting getting up my weaponsmithing skills to help my lower seasoned guildmates, I searched the lands for magical items to aid me in combat, increasing my strength to its physical peak, my constitution to new heights, increasing my connection with Thor enabling me to command the ferocious thunderstorms and wield the Strength of Thor himself. I could feel myself gain in power and str as I aquitred these items and the more I fought the enemies in Albion and Hibernia, the more my skills were honed and improved.

The rewards for the largest and feared of beats sin Midgard and the underworld Dungeon that is darkness falls have increased my str and skill yet more to new heights and a sense of achievment has come over me, having slain the devourer of souls on so many occasions, I would assume Legion himself fears Midgard as he has been banished by us no less that 12 times now.

Alas a tough time has fallen upon me, a dark time, a time when Thanes realmwide feel the pain, the link with them and Thor is weakened, they are struggling against their enemies, they are in a battle, a battle of.............survival. I can only hope I cna get through this dark time and that better days await around the corner, but for now I can only hope and do my duty for my realm, for The People, for MIDGARD.

Good post, Roalith! :)

I think my "When" was, when I was about level 10 and realized that there was a world outside the Campacorentin Forest, and wondering if i would ever be able to cross the Salisbury Plains to get to Camelot! Suffice to say i hadn't figured out how the horses worked yet. :)

And then when I got to Camelot... it just blew me away! The first adventures in Campacorentin Forest will always hold a very special place in my heart though. Levin was my first ever created character (in mid March), and i'm happy to still play him. :)

Happy thread - and I agree.
I remember when I first launched the beta client, created a norseman, thinking just how much better the graphics look than in EQ - and feeling all high and mighty because I explored Midgard up to Mularn (Jabrylla had me for breakfast, though)!*grin*

That 'a whole new world' feeling I still get sometimes.
Love that game :D

I remember when I first saw a salisbury giant... "OMG that thing is huge, and rock hard!!" were my thoughts... Of course I hadn't seen a forest giant at that stage either. ;) The first kill of a giant was quite fun as well. I really don't like giants. ;)
As for where I first logged in, Prydwen Keep if course. My first character was a briton mercenary (lost in a server wipe back in closed beta), I never really did like the mercenary class. :p

I find it's not a single epochal moment, but a series of reminders which handily come along from time to time when things are low.

Walking out of Prydwen Keep when I first started, my first ever MMORPG, was pretty amazing. That certainly gave me the first hook. I couldn't believe the scenery, and the movement and suchlike. Then at about level 10, I remember having a marvellous time with some new friends called Lamont and Vivianne up in the black mountains, killing spiders. There's a hill up there from which the sunsets and sunrises are fantastic. In my early 30s, things were starting to get grinding. But I remember getting the first ever realm points for the Guild. 2am at Nottmoore, my first ever keep take and defence. I hit something with my puny crossbow and someone else killed it, so I got about 5 RPs. I was so chuffed. Standing on the battlements watching the sun come up (Midgard has amazing sun moments - must be the snow) I was hooked all over again.

Like Solid, I found the forties pretty unremittingly grim. The Guild had grown, and with it the internal tensions and difficulties. People were frustrated with grouping and levelling and activities and anything else you care to mention. Some good friends just gave up. Stupid arguments took place between people who probably couldn't tell you why they were so cross the next day. I hated the forties. Around 47 and 48, I thought seriously about quitting DAoC. The Guild had some serious internal arguments, and bad feeling and departures and suchlike. I'm sure a lot of it was just down to many of us being bored and frustrated and not enjoying ourselves, so little things that months ago would have been laughed off or not noticed, suddenly became ridiculously serious. I think parents would say we were getting tired and fractious ! In frustration at one point, I even typed "/gc quit", but mistyped it "/cg quit" in my haste ! It was only that grim "this-bugger-isn't-going-to-beat-me" approach (which many 50s will remember from those levels) that kept me going.

Then I hit 50, like so many people, in yet another trees group. That music (I'd covered the XP bar with my compass), brought with it a rush that I haven't experienced in any other gaming context. I felt like crying, I was so happy ! I went on holiday a couple of days later wondering whether that would mark the beginning of the end for my DAoC involvement.

But since I got back, it's just been back to the beginning in terms of enjoyment. Not having to XP gives me time to chat, time to fight in the frontier, time to just stop and look around. And hey, it's great ! Like many Guilds, we've come through the other side of the troubled patch, and with new characters emerging we've got some great roleplay and good laughs going on (although a new batch of forties are going through the horrors like I did). Then, on Sunday night, another revelation. A full group of Templars, most 50, who'd known each other for months, went skirmishing in Midgard. We lost some battles and won some battles. We went to the crab camp in Uppland. I'd never been there before, and it's beautiful. Just amazing. And I thought, I'm here with great friends, having great fun, doing what I want to do, having helped build a Guild which I think is pretty damn special, and look at those bloody mountains ! Hook, line and sinker.

Like Jupitus, I'll be here till they switch the lights out.

Yeah.

First thing that really hit me and made me think this game was good was the size of it. Having not played EQ before DAoC, and loading up the beta, I was amazed at the size.

As Dannyn has said, the Salisbury Giants were amazing the first time I saw them, then the Forest Giants, then when we took Nottmoor, and I passed the GG with about 50 others, half of us stopped and stared for about 3 minutes while Thrinnor was yelling for us to hurry up :)

Though, it was the final few days of the beta, with the EoB events and the massive RvR that made me decide to get the game in retail. Boy that was fun :)

<sighs>

Lots of beautiful memories... winning or losing, I don't care which, I have just enjoyed myself as much as possible.

Sunrises, sunsets, guild hunt in Tepok's Mine to gather enough cash to buy back our emblem at retail, the first guild hunt to down all epic mobs in Llyn Barfog.... all kinds of fun.

I am glad that Mythic have seen fit to lessen the load on levelling 40-50 somewhat... as Aethelstan rightly points out, that whole spell leads to a great deal of stress on a player, and is not much fun at all. As a guild, Phoenix Legion are most definitely not a team of power gamers, and as an infiltrator I probably find it harder than most to get into good groups (actually, I gave up about 3 weeks ago... I solo Pygmy Goblins now, or build a guild group, simple as that and far less stressful) so I am simply crawling my way to 50 bit by bit like the proverbial mountaineer clawing his way, inch by inch, up the final few hundred meters of Mt. Everest. The guild have had their own ups and downs, like any guild, with each and every one of us feeling the pain of this 40-50 grind. I take some heart now as one by one our players are hitting 50 and then getting out into RvR more, or enjoying guild hunts with a higher degree of success.

Vidx - If ever there was confirmation for you of what a great game this is, I'll simply report to you that after several months away, Thrinnor is now back ingame and levelling his cleric up with us to come kick arse with us when we get out there more....

Hate the xp mill, but love the Guild and the Game.... see you out there :)

Jup.

EDIT: Oh, and yes Aeth... I've had my fingers poised, tears of frustration in my eyes, over the keyboard for the /gc quit command once or twice.......:(

Great idea for a thread Roalith.....

I played EQ for a week and promptly realised that i'd need to play for months to get anywhere to match other people on the server. I noticed that DAoC was still in European beta so signed up for that.

Graphically, DAoC was very impressive....miles ahead of EQ. I started off at Prydwen Keep as an Armsman and met lots of very nice people (and one who sold me a crappy sword for well over the asking price....little did I know).

My favourite memories are:

Going from Prydwen Keep over the bridge towards Salisbury plains and seeing all of the purple mobs. I thought I was miles from home at that stage and panicked a bit. I got a bit lost and followed the road in the wrong direction and managed to end up at the broken bridge by the river (I didn't realise you could use a compass at that stage). I think its fair to say I never had to worry about walking back. It amazes me how big the 'world' is. A lot of work must've gone into it. Especially when I think i'm only in one of three realms.

Getting a decent drop and equiping it is a great feeling and I still get a bit of a buzz when I get a drop, even if its something I can't use! Its great when your first Proc weapon goes off too. he he.

Going to RvR for the first time. I didn't realise that the Mids were non-human and when I was pounced on by a purple Troll I almost had an accident that i'd prefer not to describe in more detail. They scared the hell out of me!

Best part of all must be some of the people you meet on the way, and fellow guild members. Some of whom I have known since beta. Its quite fun just sitting around throwing insults around and going xping.

Oh don't get me started on beta... *wipes away a tear* Beta rocked so much. *sniffle*
Beta RvR was great fun, people like thrinnor, dtm, licker, balnor, hothnogg, jenna, pyrotechnix, the list goes on and on...

Some other things that I remember:
The first time I saw someone with an emblem. Not only where they high level (20 seemed high back then), they had this really cool cloak!
Forming the guild back in beta... we barely managed to get the 8 people online. ;)
My first view of castle sauvage. All the guards! Expecting to see a middie or hibbie army come storming down the road and do battle any moment! It was terrifying in a way, yet exciting.

I remember xping on salisbury plains and Clivedunn telling me he was in some forest with undead trees miles away on the far side of the plains. I thought then that this game was going to be so hard.

I was right :)

I remember looking at the huge crab that Blood and Thing < at least i think it was them > brought to Atla when i was a level 9 SB, i remember hearing "Pull"or "INC" for the first time <and i thought what the feck, i had no clue what those meant, also, believe it or not, i used BS while i was not in stealth hehe, then i read its an opening move >. It was all really amazing then. Now its more of a chore really.
But the most amazing thing was seeing an unfamiliar celt champ running round in Yggdra Forest, i didnt read any DaoC related pages then and i had no clue just how "safe" Yggdra was.

DaoC is the first RPG <i only played strategy games before> game, so i can be biased in this. But the first impression that i got from it was ---> i was giggling like a little kid while exploring the different ways to kill the mob with mah SB.

So despite all the negative aspects DaoC will not be shelved by me for a long while <well ill prolly have to divert some of my playing time to SW:G though>

Beta on Excal, Camping the Shale hill and plucking up the courage to go and kill a *gasp* Salisbury Giant but dying many times to them.

Moving to Prydwen and having literally half the server in Circle of Power (inc all the high levels - well 20 was high!). Fighting with the guild at the ant room in Keltoi.

Starting again there in retail. Then specific incidents:

Ressing Jupitus, Lunar, William and Jaas many times within 5 mins at the stone circle by WD (Think Jaas died 5 times in 3 minutes!). Ressing Jup & Lunar many more times as we all leveled.

Fighting with Defoe, William and the rest of Phoenix Legion and Mystics in the depths of catacombs. Getting a donation from Trixa down there to get the last bit of cash together so that Starkk, Paithan and I could pay for our emblem.
Leaving Catacombs and having 3 GM's all dead to the rooters near the Yarleys - all trying to beg a res off someone.

The guilds first RP's when I grouped with Amra, Shenonder and some other SotL in Snowdonia as we ambushed Marion and someone else who were purple and red camping the border keep.

To be honest the best levels were the ones up until 35 or 40.
There was the heart being set pumping at the sight of a middie in our frontier - especially if he wasn't purple! Everything seemed so much more exciting then - Mithra, then Keltoi - even a foray into Tepoks.

Since those levels the excitement kind of left the game. The whole xping thing became such a drag then and much more a case of camping the same spot for hours on end. There was much more responsibility with trying to defend our frontier, organise the guild through periods of people leaving, arguements and having to kick people out. Sometimes it just didn't seem worth it as well and I longed to just join another guild and let someone else deal with it all :(

Thankfully it does improve and there were good moments such as being grouped with Piffany, Morden and others when we decided to kill a bone snapper for the first time. That fight must have taken about 10 mins! The game has changed for the better as well especially once you hit 50 and realise there's no more trees or goblins that you have to kill :)

I'm wondring if Ro started this post after our chat last night, as for memories, first time getting lost in the dark (my monitor is crap, still cant see well in the dark) and losing my guilds Theurgist, cos I didn't know what she meant when she said /follow :)
First time I went into Mithra with a guilds cleric and armsman, they were about lvl12-13, I was about lvl8, from guild chat it sounded like they were having so much fun and I'd asked to join, took me 10 minutes to find the entrance :D
Soloing spiders in Black Mountains and being asked to level a scout and infiltrator, think I was lvl7-8 and they had only just turned lvl5
Making my first weapon for someone and also breaking that magic 500 barrier in weaponcrafting after being chained to the forge by Nalinya, so my guild could finally make siege gear without any hassle.
Going through the 30s as a guild, think that really bound us together since we nearly always exp'd together then, even though now some of the original members have left and we aren't a large guild, we have been there since the opening day, mainly due to loyalty and friendships forged early on and now theres not many of those guilds left from the early days which is kinda sad.

This being my first MMOG I think it has alot going for it still, I've got over 49 days /played on my main now and although I've been in every area in Albion, thinking about it there's still things I've yet to do (including getting to 50 ;)), so I think I'll be about for a while yet, just might end up playing alts to break up the monotony that is 40-50

Oh and one other thought I had way back when was, how the hell did Soulfly manage to get to lvl50 and still stay sane while most other Albs were still in their early 40s

Get him levelled! Brilliant guy. Remember the time we set up a catapult away miles up in HW in the last few days of beta, with Middies trying to take one of our keeps. It took, like, forever to get there. And, omg, Thrinnor ressed me, a lowbie lvl 28, when we were killing the Stones :)

ah, the good ol' days.

Created a highlander fighter first and started out in Humberton. Gained my first level killing ants and when it was time to train I decided to put my points into charisma - I wanted to look good so I could charm the ladies

Took some time to get a hang of it. I was still a highlander fighter at level 7, with lots of charisma and some dexterity to make that lookpicking a bit easier. Finally someone told me to go join a guild in Camelot. I was amazed by the beauty. First trainer I ran into was paladin. So I became a very goodlooking, and somewhat dexterious, totally gimped paladin specced in slash and crush :)

Those were the beta-days

There is no doubt that this game gives me a rush like no other... my "When" was jut after I had taken my lvl5 SB to Uppland for a look-see.. felt like a big brave explorer, managed to get back to the PK and was greeted by a large purple troll, he asked if I was lost... I told him I had been exploring and that it was dangerouse out there, this made him laugh and he gave me 5 gold pieces.. that act of kindness got me hooked...(at the time I didnt realise that 5g was prob not a lot to him)

Other nice things..
A purp healer trudging all the way from spin to rez me and my group at Askheim..

Dwendorine taking me and a shamman to Varul, everything conned purple, She and her m8 power leveled us and gave me a TL Sword (I still have it)..

My first sight of invaders in Ygg, I died of course, but it was a rush..

First kill in BG

Since then, I go out of my way to help new players, I dont like beggars but I will always help newbies out... I get a kick out of that....

Its not just a game... its a community and its brilliant!!!

Unfortunately I am at the 40-50 stage so exping is a chore, but all I have to do is after each ding, or mini-ding; go find some one on one RvR (usually at the BK's in Hib) doesnt matter if I loose, its fun either way, and then back to exping.. I cant wait til lvl 50, it will be worth the long waits and slog in malmo...

When I was just a lowly rogue I was looking at the map that came with the game and realised my home town was close to muspel, I went there and explored... this was way back on the weekend of release, a /who revealed the highest level was 21, there was a large group of people fighting soot harvesters :) I sat and watched for a couple of minutes :) I remember the first time I went in nisses lair in a guild group, it was crazy, people killing everything that popped while some people were desperatly shouting our orders. My first taste of RvR, I was hunting those little wind sprites outside yggdra gate and I decided to see what it was like on the other side, I just happened to walk out in the middle of a mass battle, 15 albs had charged the gates and were fighting some mids, I charged in and actually damaged a red highlander, imagine my joy when 20 secs later, just before I died, I saw the message "you gain 2 realm points!". Those were all good times, it's a shame you can only live them once :(

well, i didnt like the game at all, when i started out.

comming from fast paced combat in quake 3, the slow 1-5 combat was boring like nothing else.

so i shelved it again, and deleted the beta client.

a few weeks later, i was bored, and decided to download it again, just for fun.

had a little more fun, this time. so i didnt whipe it.

fooled around with classes and races in beta. highest beta char was 11

at that point, i decided well, lets try the retail. might be a laugh.

My When moment, was when i noticed the difference between a slasher and a thruster, in PvE.

my infil could actually do stuff!

now? well, everything wears off with time.
Shrouded isles and Reaver, might do it for me again, who knows :)

until then, im prolly gonna do NWN instead. subscription runs out, and i cant really be fuzzed

Ah, Remember, makeing a Highlander Fighter,
Nameing after my Grandad, as he looked like him, in his younger days :)

Killing, Spirit Hounds, then wondering into Huberton Castle, seeing the Concil shouting at each other, Then heading to the very top (well highest i could get, couldent climb ladders then)

Then running out, Buying a Bronze Hammer, but training in Slash,
Grouped with Anuther highlander Fighter, who also had a gotey and red Hair, as we cheer each other, and slayed Ants,

We meet a very nice Acolyte, she asked to join are party,
We then went on an adventure, to the church, I ran there, thinking,

Gosh, this is great, and buying some studded legging, to match my rawhide Armor, the skelly droped, Here me all chuffed, with half a set of Armor, and them with none,

Then we meet a level 7 merc, were like, Wicked, look at his Armor, How did you get that horse, can you take us on a journey,
He asked us if we help Him find a Dwarf Brawler,

Well anyway, They were good times, were, everyone Played the game, for what it is, not for being the best,

Well, was a very fun my first day, and i wish it stayed like that,

I remember mah first look at the game...logged in with my level 1 avalonian elementalist and wondering how to play this....getting the spells and sprint set, thinking " Ha, i am the master !" and going out and dying to level 0 mobs cause i dint know how to enter combat mode..... :)

Then making a highlander fighter, walking up to the top of that hill, and looking out on the roads and the bridge.......was very sweet :)

Ah yeah, i also remember doing that inital quest you get from your trainer to deliver a letter to caer ulf, i get there after walking through the woods at night [fearful of purple mobs jumping me :) ] and getting to the horse dude......thinking "Cornwall...thats where i just left(it was actually campacorentin :) )" and riding the entirely wrong direction for the whole way, seeing the sights of albion....getting to cornwall, walking back to the undead castle in av marsh and dying :)

Theres been some great moments for me.. like helping to form Avenging Angels (now AoV) with Cavex, Yussef and all, and finally seeing the emblem on my sword and shield.
One of the defining moments for me was realising that yes, Slythcur was not unbeatable! (some highbie solod him, I was there thinking "wow, is there nothing that guy cant kill"). Also thinking that the Red Dwarves near Humberton were actually members of Midgard, and charging into them, only to lose xp :)

Mostly the thing that keeps me in the game are all the great people I've met, and theres been some real personalities.. to be honest I dont know where the idea that Alb is full of lamers comes from :)

Most recent defining moment.. Roalith, Karimkazi and myself killing Death, and then Silk and I killing Sticky a few weeks after.
