Spend a burning summer in New York. You'll never think England can ever get hot again. Only when you are in New York in 40+c temperatures with stupid humidity will you be allowed to complain.

Yes but they have air conditioning everywhere, even on the subway trains.

Obviously you're meant to spend the time outside.

Otherwise it's like saying the Arctic isn't cold if you take a heated house with you.

No it isn't. Its saying that if you go to a country that gets high or low temperatures on a regular basis they tend to be ready for it and therefore don't suffer too much. In this country we're all used to being cold and I bet we all have central heating and a few electric heaters but how many of us are prepared for a heat wave and have air con?

I'm with the "It's just too damm hot" brigade. I can only thank the powers that be, that we've just had a new datacenter built & the aircon is massively over specced, and keeps it at a chilly 15 C - good for popping in and cooling down, but you can't stay in there too long in shorts and T-Shirt ... ping pong ping pong :D

Ignus is spot on. When I lived in Gibraltar, it was hotter than this all the time, but I was never this hot. That's because the whole place is built from the ground up to deal with the heat - the buildings were always cool inside.

PS. Do I go in your sig now ignus?

I don't mind these temps in Florida because all the villas, shops, etc have aircon and our villa had a pool.

BTW atm its listed as 36c for tomorrow in the SE, all temps are taken in shade...phew.

Prunes turn you on?

It was utterly insane at football this afternoon. So many sweaty people together in one space. Erk.

I think we get a different "type" of heat over here. Aldi budget heat.

It was far hotter in Rome when I was there on holiday recently, but it was a dry heat. Over here, whenever it gets remotely warm the humidity goes through the roof.

Code:
[b]Temperature (°C / °F) 22 / 71
Relative Humidity 90
Wind Speed (mph) 3( SE )
Pressure (mB) 1017, Rising
Visibility Moderate[/b]
I have no idea what scale the Beeb uses, but I'm guessing "90" isn't very good.

I'm stuck to my chair :(

Vacuum Cleaner (Dyson) blew up yesterday.

PC went into fuck-you-I-ain't-working mode last night. OK now.

House full of dust due to decorating.

Spending Sunday ripping up carpet ready for floorboards to go in tomorrow.

Sunday likely to reach 36 degs in London.

Yer - all down to humidity ~ Aldi buget heat indeed

If the temperature is high in the summer time, and the air has come in from the Atlantic, it has a lot of moisture in it. It can feel very uncomfortable.

The reason, of course, is that we cool our bodies down by perspiring. The water droplets on our body evaporate and the process of changing from the liquid into a gas use up some latent heat and thus we cool down.

If the humidity of the air is very high then the evaporation process slows down, making us feel more uncomfortable. This is why it is often much more uncomfortable in tropical rain forests aka Southampton than in places where the temperature may be just as high but with a much lower water vapour content in the air.

The worst thing is shaving in this weather, its a nightmare at the best of times but when sweat hits your shaving rash :flame: and growing a beard is just not advisable in this heat.
