SK's Diary of Building a PC

Wednesday 21st August (Day 1)

After about a week or so I had finally made my decision without considering my budget. This morning I ordered a case from coolcasemods which I have always fancied. Never had a decent looking case so here I go.
Order processed nicely and from reading the sites FAQ's "All orders received before 3:00 pm are shipped same day for next day delivery unless otherwise stated, using City Link. " (It was 8:45AM) so I paid that little bit more to get my delivery tomorrow. With it being a Thursday tomorrow I thought maybe I had better use the delivery address of my work place seeing as no one will be at home to accept the package.

Thursday 22nd August (Day 2)

As it came to 3pm I thought I would check to see the status of my box on CCM website. "Shipped: No", hummm strange. I head over to CCMs IRC channel to speak to some guy who apparently works there (ModBod). The usual "Sorry the box is taking longer than expected" was used and I stated that i am not bothered its late but the box has to come tomorrow as we are moving address and of course there will be no one there. He said don’t worry it will be there tomorrow before the move.
With this I was happy.

Friday 23rd August (Day 3)

After being onsite all day at work I didn’t know if the box had arrived or not. After getting back to the office (Now the new offices) I find nothing has arrived. I checked the site to find it still has not been shipped. Right back to IRC to find this guy. No sign of him, so I speak to some other person who happened to be opped in the channel. After saying he doesn’t work for CCM but the best bet to ring and ask. At this stage it was 5:30 and of course no answer. As there was no answer I thought I had better send an email about what’s happened and the new address to be sending it to.

Saturday 24th August (Day 4)

Feeling relieved as I now have a week off work for my holiday. No reply from CCM, which I didn’t mind with it being the weekend.

Sunday 25th August (Day5)

As above

Monday 26th August (Day 6)

No reply from the email I sent to CCM at about 5:30 so I proceeded to send another email to the guy who I spoke to on IRC and I also CCed it to the support address.

Tuesday 27th August (Day 7)

Still no reply from the Emails. Once again I ring to find engaged tone 99% of the time. After getting through I speak to someone. The conversation went something like this...
Me: "Can I have a progress update on order xxxxxx"
CCM: "Okkkkk, Just hold the line please" he proceeds buy sticking his thumb over the mouthpiece.
***About a 1 minute wait***
CCM: "I am so sorry sir, it seems your order was over looked"
Me: "How is that so, i've sent many emails and spoke to ModBod AKA Bill on IRC"
CCM: "There are a lot of people on holiday at the moment. I shall look at your order right away."
Me: "So when will my order be delivered."
CCM: "I will try to get it shipped tonight."
Me: "So it could be next week then?"
CCM: "I will try to get it out by tonight, I have your mobile number here, and I shall ring you upon closing to let you know the status of your case."
Me: "Ok thanks."

Of course at about 7pm I guessed he wasn’t going to ring. I looked at the status of the box on the website to find it was now "Shipped: Yes". With this I didn’t think anything else.

Apart from this I brought most of my things from overclockers today, mobo, memory, cpu etc. So feeling a bit chuffed with myself for spending my well-earned cash.
Now with the overclockers order I made two orders as the mobo and memory went on my card and the rest of the kit went on the missus' card.

Wednesday 28th August (Day 8)

After much waiting around for this box time was getting late and still no package. Once again I didn’t have enough time to ring them and had to leave it for today. Now with it not arriving today I knew it would come tomorrow as I am out all day at Alton Towers with a friend but only time could tell.

I woke to find in the morning an email from overclockers saying there is a problem with payment and to contact them ASAP. I rang to find that it was nothing but an automatic email because the computer saw two orders but thought it could have been a mistake. This was all fine. Emails came though that day both from overclockers. One stating that my card order was fine and had been shipped next day the other saying that they had run out of my processor. So this will be a day late.

Thursday 29th August (Day 9)

8am-8pm Feeling tired, as my mate seems to walk as fast as I can run. During the day I said to him that the box would arrive today, as they know I am not home. Sure enough I got home to find a card telling me that I had a delivery but of course no one to pick it up. Normally the missus is at home (Student) but she was away in Amsterdam with friends.

Now the overclockers stuff had arrived and one of the next-door neighbours had signed for the package. With these in my hand I was pretty chuffed.

Friday 30th August (Day 10)

After looking at the card I noticed that the card said their offices are located in Derby (I live in Nottingham) which isn’t too far away but this just added to the frustration of this whole mess. I rang their offices to find out what ID they would accept before I leave for Derby, she proceeds to tell me that the box will have been shipped out again today. With this I felt much better although I had to wait around for this to arrive.
Now I also had to wait for the overclockers stuff to arrive, which I waited around and thought I would take the bin bag out to find my overclockers stuff had been delivered to and one of my neighbours had signed for it again. Now I never heard this come but all the same I got my stuff. Now it was just waiting for that case.
After much waiting around I saw the van arrive and the biggest smile came across my face. It was like Christmas when I was young. I got the box and took out my brand new sexy case. With this I prepared quickly to get my stuff together to begin building my new PC.
I started building the new PC and took out any decent stuff I could retrieve from my old PC (video card, sound card). I got it started and powered her up, I was loving it with all the lights shining out my new case. Looking on the board (Which has LED status lights telling you the error) I found it said 'C1' on it. Looking through the manual I see that this means there’s a memory issue. I take it out and then replace it again. Same thing. I speak to a few people off the net and they say its either the mobo or memory but would say its the memory. I ring overclockers about this and they guy states that the memory seems fubar and will need returning. He asks for my order number which of course is on my old pc so now I have to rebuild this to get this number off it. I ring back with the order number with someone else talking to me. He said that I should try all this other shite first before they will replace it. I go ahead and try it anyway to find it’s the same. I ring back to tell this guy but the guy who I spoke to the first time picked up so I gave him the order number, he issues me with an RMA number so I package it up and get ready to send it tomorrow (too late now).

Saturday 31st August (Day 11)

With me doing some work on the side this day I asked the missus to mail it to them (she came back Thursday). Sure enough it went.

Sunday 1st September (Day 12)

Drinking probably. [sad]Other than drinking I probably plugged my new computer into the mains just to look at the baby light up in the dark.[/sad]

Monday 2nd September (Day 13)

Seeing as though I had sent the package Saturday sure enough I thought the package would arrive at their offices' in the morning and they would have a new part shipped to me for Tuesday. About 5:00pm I received and email telling me that the package had arrived at their offices, with this I thought there’s no chance they will send me a new part out by tomorrow.

Tuesday 3rd September (Day 14)

I was right....
Although I got an email to say that it had been shipped. I sent an email asking about the RMA, weather it had been replaced or was not reported faulty.

Wednesday 4th September (Day 15)

New memory came but of course I was at work. I came home at lunchtime to check and picked up the card from Royal Mail. I made my way down to their offices' to find they close at 12:30pm (What kind of business closes at 12:30 mid day  ). Today was to be a long day as for the first time I had been asked to work through the night. Got to bed at about 5am after working from 8:30am.

Thursday 5th September (Day 16)

I woke this morning at 10am as I set my alarm to make sure I get to the royal mail office before it shuts. Feeling knackered I make my way down there. I get the package and once again get excited about it all. I stick the replacement memory in and fire her up. Hummm C0 error. Read the book to find it’s an add-on card error. I take out the cards and switch it on again. C1, with this I begin getting ratty and start to get quite upset. I reseat the memory a few times and begin to get very frustrated. I ring overclockers to tell them the story and they suggest it could be the motherboard blowing the memory and suggest I send back the mobo and memory. So getting off the phone I sit there getting very pissed off and begin stripping it down. Of course with lots of packaging it’s hard to put things back in boxes the way they come when first received. I force the mobo back into its box (which is now bowing from the strain) and put the memory back in its pack. After this I put together my old pc and make my way to here and start this thred, been writing for about an hour now and im feeling very tired. I now need to get dressed again and package this to be sent back to overclockers.

To be continued...

I believe this could be why they took so long to get your case to you. Never trust anyone from Derby

I forgot to add to that, when the case arrived I noticed that CCM never sent it that day they said they had so it wasnt CityLink's fault...

5th September 2002 (Day 16) Continued...

Just come back from the post office after spending £1.99 on bubble rap, £1.55 on Tape and £6.45 special delivery.

eQ-B showed me this rather nice pic the other day which I thought was very nice. It wasnt made on my behalf either.

OcUK, not worth the bother.

i'd feel safer buying from a dodgy car boot sale, at least then you know what the hell you are buying!

ship it all back, request a full refund, and buy from someone else!

Many people have had problems with Scan, but I've ordered at least 10 times from the them in the past year and have had not one single cockup. Although I had something similar with KustomPCs last year (but it only took one week to sort out). :)

I ordered my monitor from eBuyers, arrived next day no problems. Lovely.

Ordered everything else from OCUK, hoping I'd get it next day (fucking lol) as I was going on holiday the day after. The website led me to believe something along the lines of that all orders placed before 3:00pm would be dispatched the same day, because of this I paid about £10 on top for next day delivery. Woke up the Tuesday (having ordered it on Monday) and had a monitor from eBuyers, but nothing else. Oh well.

That said, it did arrive while I was away and I managed to build it and had no problems with any of it, other than me being a fucktard and setting the jumpers on the CD-RW and HDD to primary or something. I'm a little worried that my CPU is running at 43°C though :)

While it may not be the most entertaining post in the world, if you don't care why not "just fucking use your back button", or in other words "STFU!"

tbh ordering online & delivery is always gonna be more risky than actually getting something out of a shop (cos at least there you can open the box & have a shufty to see if everything is ok), thats how it goes.

Thankfully i'm like caLLous, i've never had any problems yet.

That's why I'd probably have gone to PC World to get my hardware if it wasn't so incredibly overpriced. Because you don't have to wait around for it, and if any problems arise you can take it back and see what the fuck they're going to do about it. Trying to communicate with businesses via email/telephone is useless.

[edit: PC World is an example, I'd rather buy it offline I mean.]

All seems like a load of moaning to me. If you order parts from different places and expect them to be delivered on time you're a fool.

Buying a PC from dell.co.uk is far easier. Only took under a working week for mine to arrive. :p

I live like 5 minutes from Overclockers, the owner is a cock and the place is scabby, although I have to say some of the lads who work there are really helpful.

Let me know if you are coming over SK and I will give you some nice directions from the M6.

Hi SK, i totally sympathise with you, I upgrade/repair/build PCs as a sideline and they can be real pigs when they go wrong. The PC i have now (home brew) is about 1 year old, been running none stop and hardly any probs so i guess im lucky.

I use a company called Novatech (http://www.novatech.co.uk) for my parts, very good company and great customer service. The worst companies i have used are Dabs and Eclipse.

Hope you get it all sorted and look forward to the updates.

it reminds me of when I "bought" a USB ADSL modem off microwarehouse it took me a month to realise that the product hadn't been released! all the time they changed the web-site from 5+ instock through 1 in stock to 5-8 days......

the fact that I was paying for ADSL at the time made me really ratty added to the fact that they wouldn't tell me that the product wasn't shipped yet. It took me e-mailing the suppliers(when I say suppilers I mean USR-UK) and them telling me "oh yes that should be shipped [from us] in about 2-3 weeks. This was a whole month after ordering!!!

oh and btw dell are shite :p

everywhere I work seem to have them and I have never got a decent one yet....

We use Dells and they are fantastic in every respect (except possibly cost), most other people, I suspect, would agree with me, maybe this only applies to more recent models however?
