Halo PC

Yeah but HL undeniably advanced the genre, bringing something different to the table. I'm easily bored so that's important. You do have a point about OpFlash, that was kinda new territory.

/Me realises the idiocy of trying to explain that the PC FPS scene is in a bad state to a community formed, primarily, because of their love of PC FPS games.

there you have it. you see, FPS shouldn't be played on consoles. stuff like teh footy games, fighting games, driving games et all then sure, even I will like em. just no shooters pls.

Why not. When Im in the mood for it there's nothing better than slumping on the sofa in front of a 32" widescreen (with progressive scanning double resolution, and surround sound) and immersing myself in a FPS. Its a totaly different experience from sitting perched on a swivel 12 " away from a monitor.

As far as the controller goes, Ive been using a mouse and keyboard since Quake and Heretic and it only took a couple of sessions to get used to it.

Halo = best console FPS of the current crop of consoles.

All time king of console FPS is Goldeneye.

Do not waste your lives comparing console FPS games to PC FPS games as the PC is the natural home of the FPS and you just cannot do a FPS justice on a console.

Ahem.

Halo is very good fun, the graphics ARE good, its all the little touches (moreso with the sound actually) that I like.

However...I played it. I completed it. The Flood levels are dull, apart from that it was the best single player game I have played since Half Life.

I tried multiplayer, it was "ok". Played multi for about a week and haven't touched the game since.

I've played MOHAA online since Day 1 of release and still do.

Not really any comparison.

Btw System Shock 2 is not an FPS, its a role playing game primarily and is my all time favourite pc game.

All above - IMO of course, albeit that its all the facts ;)

For those of you who have played Halo multiplayer - is this multiplayer as in linking Xboxes together or split screen. Or is it the online version whereby you connect the Xbox to a PC and run a small programme on the PC that fools the Xbox into thinking its linked to three other Xboxes.

If its the last one whats the programmes called so I can try it out.

I've done both GDW.

xboxconnect is the free proggy for online play (ie. not xbox live). Google it for the URL, don't have it to hand sorry mate.

/edit : nm, googled and here you are -

Anyway, lets petition for a Halo board...perhaps we can make a sort of team thingy once its out for a laugh. :)

You don't need a petition...there would always have been a Halo board, and I don't see any reason why we can't set one up now.

As for whether it's GAME.NET supportable...don't know yet but I'm hoping so.

Andy said it for me - FPS games are not meant for consoles.

And don't give me that "advanced" crap about how great and ground breaking it was/is - it isn't at all, it was long outdated when it came out.

Oh yeah, and about the only FPS game that has ever managed to get some kind of balance right is Metroid Prime.

I've completed Halo on XBrick but, tbh, it got to be a real chore when you come to the Library level onwards.

I'm looking at multiplayer for the PC version - but I don't think they'll be enough to lift it above average on PC online gaming. (only 16 players max online!)

The game will be totally eclipsed by the next lot of PC FPSs (which it has to compete against) and when placed side by side with those it will really show up as being deficient.

I'm holding out and waiting.

Which is missing from the PC version.

2-4 player co-op on Legendary (with our own individual screens) would have been nice.

Shame.

I played Halo PC multiplayer at E3 - won a t-shirt too (for my L337 skillz :)) Its alright but I personally think Breed is better. Halo is probably the best console FPS around (Jonny - one word about Goldeneye and you're dead) but I don't think it'll be ahead of the pack on PC; there are so many very good FPS games out now or coming out of the next few months (and not just HL2) that you'll be spoilt for choice.

You've got 3 'future war'/vehicles/aliens games (Halo, Breed, UT2004, Dredd v. Death), you've got a bunch of 'terrorist' games (of which I'd say Far Cry is a particularly spiffing example) and a whole bunch of War games (Call of Duty will be getting a lot of my attention until BattleField:Vietnam at least).

Do any of these games reinvent the wheel? Probably not, but they are certainly showing some leaps in quality. I personally think BF is by far the most innovative FPS in years, but more people still play CS, so you can't be surprised if publishers give people what they clearly want.

As the saying goes, 'you've never had it so good'.
