a-levels are the "same" as the international baccalaureate.
in theory the ib is better than a-levels.

In theory it is but the UK school system doesn't really recognise the IB as it should - even the Welsh Baccalaureate isn't used that much, though there is a big push from the Welsh assembly to implement it more. The IB is carried forward by very few schools here.

Aika, in Britain A-Levels are more specialised, tailored to what people want to study in Higher Education ie. Uni (so normally schools allow students to take 3, 4 or 5 of these in whatever subjects they want).

In the education sector A-Levels are considered a pretty stern test of academic ability and rate amongst the top indicators used - I'm not being snobby, just that's how it's viewed here in the UK. That said, at lower levels of schooling more vocational- based qualifications are coming in, B-TECs etc. which don't equip those kids who do want to go on and do A Level's.

Sorry I'll stop, this is shop talk for me. :(

Hmmm lets see.

Teachers, ex-cambridge and oxford students, lecturers - people who know what they are talking about.

Actually, no, they don't know what they are talking about.

People who are out in the real work area knows what they are talking about and no, your university degree and how much "top of the class" you are won't change much.
Work experience counts loads when it comes to jobs, and not only related job experience.

If you got didly squat job experience, you are not going to get a job at a high-profile company easily, even with great grades.
You might be a genious, but you know fuck-all about how to behave and act at work (something you cannot learn at your precious university).

I know by speaking to professional job-interviewers, you know, those you meet when you are trying to get a job and who ultimately decide whatever or not you get picked for the position.
And from my father, who have people working below him at his company, less high-profile through, but he does hire and fire people, so he knows what he wants and does not want.

Yes, your university degrees matter, Bugz, not argueing against that.

If a Job requires X degree, people without X degree is not going to get it.

But if 2 people apply, both have X degree, but 1 got no job experience, while the other worked various different jobs at various companies, he is going to get picked first, even if the person with no job experience had better grades.

My brothers is currently getting paid 8 grand for a 10 week internship with Morgan Stanley, the glory of it all, he didn't even study Economics.

Last summer he did an internship with KMPG and travelled Europe first class on business trips.

Morgan Stanley and KMPG are two of the biggest UK financial institutions; my brother went to York Uni and studied Computer Science with applied mathematics.

How did he get these Jobs without your precious "Economics" degree? He worked his arse off and showed that he was the better candidate at the assessment days.

O he also got his internship with Morgan Stanley over loads of "oxford" types...

I think it's all to do with common sense at the end of the day, I mean who gives a toss what Uni you went to if you ain't got common sense you will still mess up in your job.

My stepfather was educated at Eaton, and he has been a car salesman for the last 35 years making not much money at all, but very quick to remind you where he went to school.

qualifications don't show anything about how you will be able to perform in a job. the training might all be relevant to the position, but it's not going to show how well you will perform. for example, 1 of my friends worked her ass off to get a first in her linguistics degree, but she's still not as good an english teacher as our friend who got a 2:2. because while my friend was working for the highest score in her degree, my other friend was out working with kids.
but we're all wrong, obviously. cuz if you aren't educated at oxbridge then you aren't educated at all!

I have a friend who was like Bugz. He grew up too quickly, aced school and college and got a place at Cardiff university to study History (not easy to get on to). At 20 (second yesr of uni) he started to realise what he'd missed out on life, got a full time job in a bar and pretty much stopped going to Uni. By this point he'd cut off all links to home (friends and parents (he sees his folks once a year for a couple of days, i've seen him once since he went to uni)). He ended up getting a 2:2 and now lives with his girlfriend and Cardiff, loves his job working in a bar and is living life without a care in the world.

It'll be interesting to see where Bugz is in 3 years.
