a-levels are the "same" as the international baccalaureate.
in theory the ib is better than a-levels.
In theory it is but the UK school system doesn't really recognise the IB as it should - even the Welsh Baccalaureate isn't used that much, though there is a big push from the Welsh assembly to implement it more. The IB is carried forward by very few schools here.
Aika, in Britain A-Levels are more specialised, tailored to what people want to study in Higher Education ie. Uni (so normally schools allow students to take 3, 4 or 5 of these in whatever subjects they want).
In the education sector A-Levels are considered a pretty stern test of academic ability and rate amongst the top indicators used - I'm not being snobby, just that's how it's viewed here in the UK. That said, at lower levels of schooling more vocational- based qualifications are coming in, B-TECs etc. which don't equip those kids who do want to go on and do A Level's.
Sorry I'll stop, this is shop talk for me.
