as my driving instructor once told me...'I'm supposed to tell you to trust other road users.....don't, cos other road users are twats. Just make sure YOU'RE always safe and doing the right thing, everyone else can fuck off!'

My Mum taught me the same thing when I first got behind a steering wheel.
Everyone else on the road is an idiot. You've got to do the thinking for them as well as yourself.

Wow, just ploughed through five pages of whining and bullshit (I won't be getting that five minutes back).

If you live in London or within five miles of the centre of any other major city, you don't need a car*. Everywhere else, you're pretty much fucked for transport without one**. Rising costs make it worse, but this has been pretty much the story of transport in Britain for the last 25-30 years.

*with the caveat that if you have kids, you need a car the size of Cheshire just to accommodate buggies, changing bags, and assorted plastic crap, no matter where you live.

**To be clear, just because you don't own a car doesn't mean you don't need a driver's licence; one of the few transport-related costs that's gone down significantly over the years is the cost of a hire car.

I don't have kids, but I do regularly drive long distances for work, and therefore have a slightly massive old barge.

Fuck anyone who doesn't like it tbh. Although if I commuted to work like most others do, I doubt I'd own a car. I'd probably use a motorcycle for visiting friends, and one of my bicycles for everything else.

Aye, cycle round most of London now as its way cheaper. Just wish the missus would cycle as well, as I have to get the tube with her everytime we go places!

I wouldn't mind cycling to work but it's just a bit too far - around 20miles each way. Half that and I'd be on it.

I don't mean to drag the topic back on Keitanz, but you can really tell he doesn't drive.

Vary your routine - drive the bike into work. Leave car at work, cycle home. Cycle in the next day. Drive the bike home.

Truth be told though, to anyone that cycles regularly 40 miles a day isn't a problem. I do between 150-250 miles weekly, it really isn't hard (except for this shitty weather).

I'm way too cool with a trendy haircut to bother with a bike.

GIVE ME A HAIRDRESSERS CAR.

Driving to work is the biggest waste of time, never going to happen. Petrol + time + parking fees is farrrrr more expensive than a 1-4 travelcard :) Can't take bikes on trains at the times I use them unless they're foldup.

Laudable in theory but then I look at all the rain gear I have to carry, the 200 bike locks I need to make sure there'll be a bike waiting when I get back, and the whole exercise soon turns into a round of "ah, fuck it, I'll drive".
