Alluded too with Vlad's post in Random Spam thread, this is worth a watch (apologies if there's a thread but I couldn't see one in OT and ofc nowhere else is worth going :p). Judgements people!:

YouTube - Golden Globes 2011 - Ricky Gervais Opening Monologue

A polarising performance for some. Surely they saw the writing on the wall with one of these ads:

YouTube - Ricky Gervais Message Golden Globes 2011 (subtitulado)

YouTube - Ricky Gervais Golden Globes 2011 PROMO 2/2

And rather clearer what might happen here:

YouTube - Ricky Gervais Message Golden Globes 2011 (subtitulado)

Not going to bother a polling it, but what do people think??

(I liked it, and have more respect for the non-up-their-own-arse celebs who laughed along with it)

Bit hard for even me to distinguish between real and faux offence, pretty good, a bit teleprompted and not his usual level of comedy.
love him or hate him, the guy is a comic genius.
I feel he held back quite a bit and has the capacity to really destroy egos,
except his own of course which he always bigs up in the hope you'll think he's
being sarcastic.

Basically just a load of celebs (as usual) being unable to not take themselves 100% seriously and then whining about someone making jokes out of their very public flaws and failings.

Tom Hanks and Tim Allen in particular, what utter *****. But then, anyone who knows anything about these people will tell you the same. The non-cunty stars didn't have a problem with it at all, the ones who can laugh at themselves. I don't think Tom Hanks even has the slightest ability to even laugh, does he? He's incredibly false. Also a shit actor.

From the articles in the Times and the Post this morning I don't think it went down to well over here :p

They weren't even vaguely offensive though, they're just jokes based on facts.

If they have a problem with it, they have a problem with the people that they're looking up to (celebs looking to celebs or the public looking to celebs).

The office was good but how much of it was down to Merchant?

Everything since then has been shit. I dont think I laughed once at his "stand up"

What I would lol at is if last night burnt his bridges with hollywood and he can no longer make shit movies.

Watched it earlier and thought it was really funny. Some of those actors take themselves far too seriously.

I've never laughed at anything Merchant has said whenever I've seen him. Is it just me or do all northeners hate Ricky Gervais? :p It seems to be the same with Jonathon Ross.

Agreed - I like the fact Robert De Niro was laughing. Most of the other 'stars' didn't want to laugh whilst the camera was on them; clearly the bloke who played Big is Sex & The City agreed with Gervais with a wry smile.

Haven't seen his 3rd stand up DVD yet. Mental not to do that. Maybe, and I hope it is the case, he was doing that on purpose because the mainstream comedy attempt in those films was utter shit.

Seems the papers have mixed reviews on both sides of the pond. Which imo makes it a success rather than the normal bland GG rubbish.

it's all publicity for him at the end of the day, I'm sure he really doesn't care if some of these celebs can't take a roasting.

I don't really like the bloke, but I enjoyed what he did at the globes. Those fuckers are do far up their own arses, and these awards are dull as fuck.

Ricky sealed it for me with that inspired sketch on charity work in Africa.

I thought it was quite amusing actually. He went in there & cracked the Hollywood egg of celebrity luvviness and watched as the yoke of jet black humour oozed down the sides.

Nice to see he's lost a load of the puppy fat. Guess its obligatory when you mix in those circlles. Look at Gordon Ramsay. Collagen, hair transplants. He's more machine than man now. Twisted and evil.

Didn't think it was that bad at all... imagine if Frankie Boyle was on the stage... he would have caused a riot.

I actually dont like Gervais and yet on the basis of this performance I have new found respect for him - it was pretty damn funny to watch celebs squirm as he threw out the rulebook :p

The Daily Mash - Hollywood stars raise awareness for their stupid, childish jobs

My favourite bit,

"Meanwhile Britain once again proved it was the leading country at everything after Colin Firth won best actor for The King's Spoon.

Firth has been acclaimed for his heart-rending portrayal of a simple man who, against all the odds, inherits an enormous silver spoon from his dad and then bravely overcomes a stammer armed with nothing but the ability to afford the best speech therapist in the world."

Yep, and that's why he's won the Oscars x number of times... because actors love him, critics love him, public can't be doing with him. When I see him being interviewed, I just see him going through another performance. You never get a sense that he's being sincere or speaking from the heart.

Yes, we all hate Ricky Gervais. :)
He's a southern pansy who thinks he's funny but he's actually shite. Like Ross. And Russell Brand.
Gimme most of the cast of Mock The Week any time. Speaking of which...

  1. They wouldn't understand his accent.
  2. He'd have crucified the lot of them.
  3. Welcome to Radio Tourettes, you fucking shitmonkeys! </Mock The Week>

As for the OP... tl:dr :)

I liked Gervais back when he was on the 11 o clock show, ( same show that launched both him and ali G ), they have both gotten progressively shitter over time as they cater to a big bland section of society to maximise their income.

Poking fun at celebrities? HOW FUCKING EDGY.
OMG.

/sighface.

Now you mean the later series of The 11 O'Clock Show or the ORIGINAL run of The 11 O'clock Show? 5 eps aired nightly for a week in September 1998.

Fred MacAuley - presenter
Brendon Burns - presenter
Iain Lee - outside broadcasts
Daisy Donovan - playing a posh totty
Sacha Baron-Cohen - playing Ali.G

Absolutely hilarious and even now I remember Brendon Burns nodding his head idiotically. Ali.G was original and funny at the time, when he's interviewing Judge Pickles, the judge looks at him like WTF?!?! :)
