Well put, other way to look at it is like walking in a discussion mid-joke.

You won't get it, they won't explain it, if they do they feel uncomfortable and annoyed to do so and you feel a bit pissed 'cause everyone is making some "inside" joke.

In time, the jokes change and you find yourself on the other side of the fence.
