im just pointing out that wearing a helmet does not hinder your ability to cycle safely
I'm not arguing for argument's sake - but evidence shows that in many ways it can - in terms of risk compensation by both cyclists and drivers and lowered awareness and thinking time.

I know, personally, that wearing a helmet makes things a lot harder for me - especially on hot days - so whilst my personal observation isn't statistically significant it is in line with the evidence. I'm more aware / less hot and bothered and flustered whilst on a bike without a helmet.

I regularly do a 60 mile round trip on off-road gentle paths with a few hills to Clumber Park from my house and back. I did it once with a helmet. Just once. Never again. Fucking hated it. I'm a head-sweater so maybe I'm just more prone to being affected by 'em - but I definitely am.

It doesn't make me more likely to jump in front of traffic. But it definitely makes it me more likely to make stupid mistakes.

It looks like a large section of population is predisposed tho.

I have to admit - I much more easily bear it in the winter.

Do you sweat in the sack as well? I feel sorry for your wife.

The only people who think cyclists should wear helmets are those who think that cycling is dangerous. It is not.

But I rarely cycle on busy roads. Most of the time I'm on quiet country lanes with low traffic levels. So why should I wear a helmet?

Tom I normally like your posts and respect your opinion and knowledge. This however is hogwash.

My brother, who is in his forties and very road savvy had a bike accident last year. He was riding on a very quiet country road, a car came around a bend as he was taking the same bend in the opposite direction, at (he says) a reasonable speed. There wasn't room for both of them and my brothers head broke his fall into the dry stone wall. The ambulance driver and the A&E doctor both said that looking at his smashed helmet had he not been wearing it he would have been dead or brain damaged. Cycling isn't dangerous, crashing is, and only one car/sheep/cow/child is required. On the odd occasion Mrs Yuck and I go out cycling, mainly local pub(s) or Grizedale I wouldn't consider not wearing helmets, never have.
Not wishing to fall out, just think on this occasion your advice is dangerous.

I think its fairly obvious that wearing a helmet will help protect you in an accident. People aren't actually trying to argue otherwise...are they? (I cba to read through wall after wall of text)

Are there really some people in this thread trying to say that not wearing a helmet while cycling is safe?

Not wearing a helmet while cycling is just like not wearing a seatbelt when in a car. You know, fucking stupid.

OMG there's no difference without Old Tohtori! We still go round in circles. everyone is entitled to their opinion whether it's crap or not. That's why we are on here instead of having a live conversation with someone who we'd have to beat the shit out of because they disagreed with us.

Scouse is trying to argue that all the second order effects of wearing a helmet are more dangerous than not wearing a helmet, both to society and the individual. Apparently your brain will heat up leading to poor decision making, and you'll also take more risks, and no one wants to ride a bike if helmets are involved so they sit at home eating cake instead and die of heart disease. I think that covers it.

Nah, that really wasn't the issue. The issue with Toht was you got sucked into a quagmire of moving viewpoints. I think he viewed the whole of FH as some kind of Kobyashi Maru thing; if you can't win the game, change the game.

I think without any evidence to prove it that too much wearing of a cycle helmet effects your brain function!:whistle::whistle:

I will admit wearing one makes you look like a bit of a bellend (that's mostly a design issue though) but you must me nuts not to wear one on our roads.

Sorry but anecdotal evidence is useless when it comes to discussing matters like this. You'll always find someone with a smashed helmet (which incidentally, has completely failed and therefore provided little to no protection). Grizedale, yes I'd wear a helmet as a few stages there are a bit dodgy, particularly the boardwalks.

On my last ride I was passed, while stationary, by a fucking massive tractor that had wheels taller than my head. I'd stopped as there wasn't enough space to cycle past it at speed. The tractor driver didn't slow down - he came straight at me and missed my shoulder by about a foot. I shit myself. A helmet would have done fuck all there. I wouldn't ever use that example to demonstrate why all tractors should have bouncy cushions on their skirts, I'd use it to highlight a shit driver - which is what your brother encountered.

Has he been banned or something?

Except you don't usually drive at 10mph, which is what the speed your average "bloke on a bike shaped object" rides at.

Random annoying things: this fucking thread right now.
Dunno why people get bothered by well-mannered discussion on a discussion forum.

Nobody is calling anyone a cunt, or changing their position to make sure they don't "lose" or anything gay like that. I'm actually finding it refreshing :)

Cos if you carried on chatting shite about a single subject for ever, David Dimbledy would sense the audiences anger and boredom and rape you.

People who wear too much cheap cologne or perfume. Was standing in line at the supermarket today and the gentleman in front of me smelled like he bathed in axe and old spice or something

Fixed.

You use a little bit.

Not half a bottle.
