Ok, i just installed adblock plus.

It ran itself and didnt ask me to activate anything, there is no icon anywhere to say it running although it is showing in my program list in the control panel

I even watched their little video on the site too

1st vid in youtube i clicked on and got a 30 second Argos ad that i couldn't skip

I run it on firefox. It's great. Get a little bar at the bottom that lets me disable per website. Added a few additional adblock filter lists too. Never an ad on youtube. In fact - I'd forgotten youtube carries ads.

The only reason I saw them was because I have to disable ad-block entirely to get Sky-Go to work with chrome.

No, you are missing the point. I am not arguing about Google's marketing strategy, I can see they are an extremely successful company.

I am simply saying that a 5 second clip of an advert that doesn't even mention what the product is, is a complete waste of time. It does also make me feel that very few advertising agencies actually know what they are doing. For every amazing advert that makes me want a product there are normally 10 times as many that are rubbish. In these ways I agree with Raven's sentiments, this is the Random annoying things thread after all.

Its only a waste of time if no-one watches the ad, If enough people watch it, for the right price, it works. Don't confuse personal preferences for statistics.

That's all coming from the perspective of the ad seller, not the ad buyer; and even those analyses* fail to point out that the ad market now is MASSIVELY larger than before the dotcom bubble (US$ 1.8bn in 1999, US$37bn in 2012) and also that its profitable; not for everyone, but then what industry is? Facebook is profitable, Google is ridiculously profitable; its important differentiate between a stock bubble and an unsustainable market, they're not necessarily the same thing. And you're flat out wrong about it not working for advertisers. The reason why Google gets more than 60% of all online advertising is because it works for advertisers, and they're diverting spend out of other channels (particularly offline) because of that.

I don't disagree about banner advertising; CPM is largely a waste of time and effort, although its not because a relatively small proportion of the population use ad blockers, its because of poor targeting, but the point is, you can't put "advertising" in a pot and say "its all a waste of time" because it absolutely isn't.

*By the way that first link is the biggest pile of techno-utopian shite I've ever read.

Unskippable adverts on Sky Go.

Back to torrents I go.
I really want someone to be the first to say "You can download a 1080p copy of our show advert free and DRM free for $3 a show or $2 if you buy the whole series". There are shows I would happily pay to download rather than obtaining them and then buying the BLU Ray down the line. But paying to stream them not always in great quality and losing them is not for me. I want a file I can just add to XBMC.

But we aren't talking about statistics, we are talking about Raven's and mine's personal preferences. It is a waste of time, please don't confuse the two.

No, that's the whole point, we're not talking about your personal preferences, at least Raven isn't, he's claiming the whole industry is a waste of time and doomed to fail. I couldn't care less about your personal preferences; pretty much everyone I know claims to not respond to ads, and yet every day I sell thousands upon thousands of Euros of product (profitably) directly because of advertising (mostly PPC).

1. Having to wait 4 weeks to change university halls as I was put in with un-sociable people, I don't even know 3 out of 8 of them a month after uni started.

(1 guy didn't join any societies I thought ok maybe their isn't 1 for his hobby or suitable, but his class had a free cruise to meet each other and he didn't go; then didn't want to come out with the other housemates I could find in the first week for a meal to get to know each other)

In my new halls the people are cool, but some of them live close so that they go home often (2 haven't spent a weekend at uni yet) so 4 were away this weekend, leaving me with 1 guy and 2 Asian exchange students.

And of course they won't need to flat mate next year, so I'm going to be left high dry and will probably have to live with randoms in the 2nd year. I don't wanna live with a bunch of un-tidy kids, which is why I was hoping to move in with 1st year flat mates :(

I don't know if I can be arsed to ask for another transfer because the other halls could be the same, but my weekends are boring as fuck if I can't tag along with other people right now.

Big banner ad (and an intrusive video, which annoyed me) at the top for Gravity, fair enough...I want to see it but I already know about it and plan on seeing it next weekend...so why do I need to see an ad for it, especially one that pisses me off by blocking the website I am trying to look at.
How did you know about it? My guess... advertising.

Saw this guy on Friday morning driving down the pavement because he couldn't be arsed to wait in the queue. On his left hand side were the walls & front gardens of houses, and on his right, parked cars. He was driving fast enough not to give a shit about anyone who might have stepped out, or just be walking down the pavement. Eventually he managed to get out through a space, then when no one was letting him out he was swearing out his window and giving the bird.

Never a policeman when you want one. I got his number plate. I don't suppose the Old Bill can do anything without video evidence or witnesses.

Yet another reason to have car-mounted plasma cannon imo.

I didn't say all advertising was a waste of time. I said current advertising is a waste of time. My point stands, if it is overly intrusive then it has a negative effect, anti-advertising if you will, if for example Addidas made me close their advert to see the website I am looking for I would say, ha, Addidas, go fuck yourselves. The rest is just spam, even if there was something people wanted to buy they are so used to ignoring the crap they have no interest in that the don't see it anyway.

I would gladly like to hear/see about things I care about.

Ever thought it might be you? After a hall move. You aren't limited to being social with people in your part of the hall you know. When I were at uni I was out and about with all the people not just four or so from my house.

It's more for not knowing people that I can live with in the 2nd year, for example I know 1 guy I get along with gets battered most days and has missed practical lessons even days; and some naive bird that has only been to about 2 out 8 networking lessons; god knows about the rest. I practically carried 1 guy through college with help from 2 others as he was shite, if I live with the people I socialise with I'm probably going to end up the same again lol.

Try talking to and getting to know people in other parts of the halls, is there no bar etc ? Then you can work out people from that group that are not doing your courses so you can't help them.

When I was at uni I gravitated more towards people on my course for second year living arrangements than my first year housemates.

Yeah try and sort something out with friends from your course. At Warwick we had to sort out our housing for the following year stupidly early. In my second year I lived with flatmates from my first year halls but in my third I moved in with friends from my course and had much more fun. You've just got to ask them what they are doing.

Seems incredibly early to be worrying about second year accommodation to me; mind you the arrangements me and one of my mates made in the final term fell through over the summer and we had to find somewhere at the last minute; we ended up sharing with three girls, which sounds great but they were pigs to live with, far dirtier (and not in the good way) than lads. Went back on campus in the third year with six friends, which was definitely the most fun.

Walked all the way to the train station this morning (15 mins), realised I didn't have my wallet (and my train ticket), so all the way back home and back again. And no-one to blame but myself. Which is annoying.

Usually what happens is that if you don't, millions of urgent calls and texts about your pet chinese midget running naked in a thermonuclear weapons storage. If you do, nothing.

Oh for the days when there were no cell phones and people would just have to wait till they caught you next to a land line. Now hustle all the time lol
