Having to pay £9,000 a year for Uni when the first year Web Development unit is all self taught, I don't particularly mind since I had to do it at college and found some nifty features to add to my site that no one else had; but I was hoping to learn some CSS so I could implement it myself not just rip it off other sites and put it on my own I can't really say that's learning.

Arcitects work for the planning office. If qualify in law you work for the CPS ect ect. And if in the 5 years you get a better offer you buy yourself out and move on. I know it is not perfect but it is better than everyone getting a free ride.

good degree = high wages = more tax
Also, the degrees that tend to attract higher wages will have a long term pull factor and collect the best pupils. Removing the cost barrier allows poorer kids to get a top class education and improve their social mobility. This reduces the gap between top and bottom and generally makes people happier. Countries with better equality have all sorts of awesome benefits that countries like the UK can only dream of. Free eduction is a rock solid wealth redistribution mechanism and I think it's a disgrace that free provision doesnt extend for all education for ever. Post grads, masters later in life, etc.
