Never studied the Iliad unfortunately, but got so much love for the Odyssey

You should definitely read it. Its even better than the Odyssey. I literally couldn't put it down. Such an addictive page turner once you get into it.

The best science fiction writers are clueless to how science actually works and thats why they are so creative

sorry but your wrong in a lot of cases im sure. Most of them do a fair bit of research. I've met Peter Hamilton on a few occasions and had some good chats with him (he lives near me) and he likes to be very clued up on current scientific theories as he extrapolates that out to whatever time frame his book is set in to have some sort of semi believable progression of science in his books.

He also did a talk last year in Leics with some of the eggheads from Leics Uni on the same subject, there were a couple of other authors there as well.

I agree, both should be on everyone's reading list, and I love the Iliad. It's one of those things, like Poe's poetry that I can just go back to again and again.

Obviously I don't find it fucked up, I find it lazy

That's why I as a rule read science fiction not fantasy.

It's not "laziness" per se. The problem you're experiencing is that you're reading the wrong sorts of books.

Try this, or this, or this :)

Heh, no arguments about Childhood's End, but I wouldn't start with Ringworld if you're going to read Larry Niven, and I've just never seen what all the fuss is about with Foundation (and its aged horribly). If you're going to read Golden Age SF, I tend to point people at Alfred Bester and Eric Frank Russell rather than the Big Three (Asimov, Heinlein, Clarke).

As for fantasy, I love ASOIAF, but it wouldn't be my regular choice of genre. There are certain fantasy authors I love (Tim Powers, Mary Gentle, Neil Gaiman), but there's a massive amount of shite.

I started with Neutron Star with Larry Niven. Great short story. I really enjoyed Protector too, which should probably be read first.

Disagree here. Foundation was great and is still great IMO.

As for Childhood's End - loved it. I figured that that book in particular may be of interest to Aoami...

Heinlein's Stranger In A Strange Land is spectacular too. Straddles the sci-fi and fantasy border a bit tho ;)

What with the wet fart Win8, the royal screw up on the Xbone 180 announcement and this abortion I really think Microsoft have lost the plot.

On the subject of MS - the fact that Visual Studio 2010 isn't backwards compatible with most versions of SQL server.

What makes Foundation the all time classic isn't the writing, it's the ideas and originality. I read Childhood's End recently and that's really dated as well but that's kind of the charm the books from that era. How everyone assumed the future was totally nuclear powered, we'd all have flying cars and computers that could do a 1000 calculations a second!

I love reading old SF but as I said, I never really "got" Foundation (as compared to say The Caves of Steel, or indeed most of the Robot books), although that might be because the later books changed my opinion of the whole series, and not for the better (I'm pretty sure I gave up around Foundation & Earth).

I went through a phase 7-8 years ago when I started plowing through all those Gollancz SF Masterworks books; classic SF going back to the 30s (I think Olaf Stapleton's First & Last Men would have been the oldest one), and Foundation was one of those, and I just couldn't get into it (I think I first read it when I was 14-15), whereas stuff like The Stars My Destination, The Forever War, and A Canticle For Leibowitz were as fresh as when they written a half century ago.

What a load of nonsense. I'd have rather stayed with Adrian Flux (who I only found because of recommendations on here) but had to go elsewhere because they won't compete on price. That's a good business strategy, let someone who's been doing business with you 5 years go for the sake of £200.

I went to them for a quote and it was about £300 more than everyone else and they wouldn''t negotiate.

My problem is that despite living in a little village where the only crime is apple scrumping, my post code area is the same as one of those dreadful nu-build estates full of middle management and their spoiled, scumbag offspring.

I can't get a fucking data signal in my house. WIFI works flawlessly.
If I move half a km away from my house, get a perfect signal.

Fuck it. I'm going to put my garden shed in the middle of Holland Park Roundabout and live on mice.
"Look mummy, there's a crazy guy in a beard doing a poo on the grass"
"Come away, Roderick. Don't look at him"
