Apologies for coming to this discussion a little late...
If you want to lose weight, get gallstones. I've lost a stone and a half in 3 months due to the fact that if I eat more than about 20g of fat, I am in absolute excruciating agony for about 6 hours. OK ok so most people here won't have gallstones, but its worked for me
Other than that, what Case said really, don't put as much food on your plate, always try and leave some, try and bump fruit and veg up to make up the bulk of what you eat (in terms of physical mass).
One of the key things that has helped me, is the concept that any food that is more than your body needs is wasted. Its wasted whether it gets left in the pan, its wasted if you leave it on your plate, its wasted if you eat it. Its still waste. You'd be surprised in these days of supersizing how much a decent meal looks like - its a lot less than you think, and once you get in the habit of eating smaller meals (which can not feel enough at first while your stomach gets used to it) then you really appreciate it much more.
