Apologies for coming to this discussion a little late...

If you want to lose weight, get gallstones. I've lost a stone and a half in 3 months due to the fact that if I eat more than about 20g of fat, I am in absolute excruciating agony for about 6 hours. OK ok so most people here won't have gallstones, but its worked for me :p

Other than that, what Case said really, don't put as much food on your plate, always try and leave some, try and bump fruit and veg up to make up the bulk of what you eat (in terms of physical mass).

One of the key things that has helped me, is the concept that any food that is more than your body needs is wasted. Its wasted whether it gets left in the pan, its wasted if you leave it on your plate, its wasted if you eat it. Its still waste. You'd be surprised in these days of supersizing how much a decent meal looks like - its a lot less than you think, and once you get in the habit of eating smaller meals (which can not feel enough at first while your stomach gets used to it) then you really appreciate it much more.

As some people in this thread can verify firsthand (especially Moggit!) I'm a fat b*stard!! Now I've gone and got myself all diabetesy and gross, I need to sort myself out a little bit.

I've lost some weight already just by not drinking Coke (high blood sugar makes you thirsty, you drink some Coke, it raises your blood sugar, you get thirsty...was drinking 6-8 litres a DAY of the stuff fercrissakes!!!)

Starting at the gym tonight and I guess I need to lose something like 5 stone (32 kilos) but I don't have a timeframe for it. I'm planning on doing it by pretty much eating what the hell I want (but cutting down on snacks and fast food) and exercising. I've also got some magic tablets from my doctor to manage my blood sugar which should help (cheat! cheat!)

To give you an idea, I'm currently something like 19 stone (121 kilograms) and about 6'5" tall (195cm) so fairly majorly overweight. The worst thing is I went from about 11 stone when I was 16 (underweight) to 18 stone in about a year!!! Stopped playing 40 hours of basketball a week but kept drinking and eating chips!

Good luck Alan! Let us know how you get on! Maybe some kind of weightloss blog? :)

Just been re-reading some of the posts as well, and I thought I'd chuck in another 2c.

One thing that this gall bladder bollocks has shown me, is that there's ALWAYS more fat in food than you think. Try and avoid all processed and pre-cooked food unless you know exactly how much fat (and sugar as well) there is in it. Be careful at the canteen at work, and don't be afraid to ask the staff there what they put extra fat into and not. Also when you go out for meals / whatever, when you order your food, ask them to try and keep the fat as low as possible. This can make a real difference to the fat content, but negligible difference to the taste. A key example of this is curries, pasta and salads. If you get a low-fat salad with full-fat dressing on it, it can be worse than eating a plate of chips.

I've had a couple of odd looks when requesting this stuff previously, but either tell them the truth, or pretend you have gall stones and explain that you'll have hours of agony if they don't keep the fat down - people are often a lot more sympathetic, and also I get the impression they make more of an effort to keep the fat down.

im 5ft5 so not that short but still very overweight but its going down and thats the main thing. after 20+ years of battling with weight problems its strange losing weight so fast. Im probably the lowest weight i have been in about 10 years.

I have done the hardest thing now and that was going threw the operation it was one of the hardest things i have done in my life as there is suck a big risk with it the op its self has a 1% chance that something really bad could go wrong then obviously you have the added risk of being fat and having to be put under anasthetic. I nearly changed my minds several times but im really glad now i went threw with it

killswitch you sound like the samw measurments as my bf (and for the record i love the way he looks i only said to him to lose weight/get fitter because of the healthy issue) hes so tall that he carries it off tbh if i weighed that much (haha mog im smaller than you, 5ft) i'd be spherical lol.

Wb again Neath you seem to be yoyoing in and out of our lives but as long as you keep coming back to let us know your alright its all good, glad your still going strong missus :)

Little helpful thingy to all those out there exercizzling or dieting might help you to make up a chart i did one with weight and various body measurments (waiste, hips, arm, thigh etc) and just fill it in once a month, ive been between 10.3 and 10.2 for ages and now im 10.1 and since last month when i started on the x trainer i lost 5 cm from my waiste, 1 cm from upper arm, and 2 cm from thighs, and im so glad i kept notes of what they were previously because i didnt realise!

If you are planning to lose weight its really good to keep track of stuff like this 1) to motivate you and 2) to make sure your doing it safely, if your losing too much or not enough you can see it and moderate your plan accordingly, it really keeps me motivated to know that i weigh in every saturday morning and weigh in and measure up every month.
