Right, its over a month since I moved house to (dull) Leicester, starting to find my feet, settle down and build a new social life.

Next is the weight loss - The goal is simple, to be able to walk into a high-street shop before Xmas and buy something off the shelf that fits ! im sick of using google to find "tall and mighty" or similar clothes, although it amazes me how many different words there are for "fat-git"

Signed up at the local gym, but what to do next ?

Going to try a minimum of 3 sessions at the gym a week (more if i can but lets be realistic with 3) probably doing 30m CV then some weights then another 30m CV

So what about food ?
Work have a canteen that does a meat+veg meal every day (just need to avoid the chips hehe) is that going to be my best bet ? then just somethign really simple for dinner at home in the evening ?

Any tips or encouragement is most welcome

ps: what sizes do the shops go up to these day :) havent been to one for ages.

Gym and staying below 2000 calories a day will do enough really. I try and be around 1500 a day (Male standard is 2500, women is 2000) and it's been working, losing weight at a good enough rate.

Just watch you eat really.. *Waits for health freaks to say something more informative*

There is no such thing as quick weight loss.

certain auto immune diseases can cause quick weight loss.

alternatively, burn more calories than you consume. it doesnt get any simpler than that.

ps: what sizes do the shops go up to these day :) havent been to one for ages.

burtons do xxl tops and 44" jeans, possibly bigger. they can order them though, as i used to be that size. now im a 36" and medium, huzzah

my best tip would be that you see if you can exercise more without thinking about it, like walking to work or riding a bike etc. Or maybe take the stairs instead of elevators etc.

For me atleast eathing 3 proper meals + eating fruit as snacks works wonders. Instead of trying to go on a low calorie intake, it makes me go nuts after a while :(

Dont we have health "experts" like vlad anywhere to enlighten us?

the BMR has been proved to be bollocks though, Olympic rowers are classed as fat bastards under that.

"quick" weight loss is bad for you and you are most likely to just put it back on again anyway. the best bet is to control your diet and get into the habit of regular exercise.
Cut out the snacks but eat regularly, you don't have to cut out drinking all together but cutting down will help ofc

Well when I say quick - i mean from now to December's (that's 6 months) so should be able to reach clothes-shop-size by then.

Problem is I have no idea how to count calories, the canteen at work dont put labels on stuff :) I can do the basics

- one Guinness a week :) (sorry i refuse to do NO alcohol)
- no more snacking

breakfast will either be some fruit or a bowl of oat/wheat based cerial and a small glass of OJ

Lunch will be whatever work have on but keep it balanced with loads of veg

Dinner will be something light, could use some ideas here of stuff to have as I really haven't got a clue and don't want to slave in front of a cooker all night.

Well, generally not eating crap and eating proper food (nothing huge) daily will keep below it. E.g. don't go and eat 500 snickers bars.

I've gone from a 34 to a 32 since December (JUST under 2 stone lost) with proper eating and exercise (Home CV stuff, 15-20 min) 3-4 days a week. It works, but since I'm not joining a gym yet - it's ok.

try cooking stir fries coz they only take 5 mins

pasta is always a good option, just watch how much u have and use a tomato based sauce

make spag bol or ur own burgers from mince and stuff

cous cous and rice are good if u can stand eating them coz i know most guys cant stand eating cous cous. and buy a george forman :p

Ta thats the sort of stuff i need to know :) I think ill be ok with breakfast and lunch at work (providing i avoid the chips and roast pots - just pile on the veg) then something like what you mentioned for dinner.

Its going to be hard not snacking - but if I can keep that up, and visit the gim for at least 1hr 3 times a week then reaching the my goal is possible.

What do you do when you get the nibbles ? Just have a bowl of fruit handy or starve yourself?

dont starve yourself, imho have like carrots or fruit ready and you can snack all you want on that + it's good for you. Maybe check out a high proteine diet so you dont feel so hungry.

For dinner tips: just buy some salmon put some peppar and salt on it and pop it in the over for like 10-12 minutes with some potatoes. Or try to make a big dinner 2-3 nights a week so the other nights you can just pop leftovers in the micro?

Maybe buy a few cook books with tips in it like this perhaps?

One thing is setting reasonable goals.

Like, try to loose little weight, many times.

Let's say you want to loose 50pounds over 10 weeks, no, bad thinking.

Try to loose 5 pounds a week, that way you're setting "less" goals, but at the same time, make a major goal at the end.

If you know what i mean.

Oh and as an encouragement: You can't do it you fat bastard, you'll never lose weight and you'll fail like always!

Now prove me wrong damnit :D

Depends what your goals are Alan.

Are you looking to maintain muscle mass or just slim down?

Raven - Do you mean BMI?. BMI works for your average person with not a great deal of muscle mass.

However for rowers/bb'ers etc it's inaccurate because obviously muscle weighs more than fat.

Have a read of this, it's more aimed at stripping fat and maintaining muscle but it'll give you a rough idea of whats needed;

http://www.muscletalk.co.uk/article-ripping-up-guide-to-cutting.aspx

2-3lbs weightloss a week is ideal, any more than that and it's likely you're burning off muscle as well.

Try to avoid things with sugar (sugar, saccharose, high-fructose corn syrup, glucose, glucose syrup).
They imbalance your bloodsugar making you feel hungry quickly after eating them again, thus make you overindulge on food :)

I say try, because they're in about everything you buy so it can be tricky, but just avoid those things with any of those in their main ingredients.

[edit] natural sugars as can be found in fruit and milk etc, are perfectly okay, because they don't get released in the bloodstream so quickly as added sugars.

Not if you stick to wholesome carb sources like oats, pasta, rice ;)

I'm sorry, but I don't quite follow you here...
I mean, not what? I gave a few points in last post. :)

What i basically meant was, if you avoid foods with a high GI, the insulin spike and consequently over-shooting of blood sugar/dropping below a normal level is what will make you feel tired & hungry.

If you stick to low GI carb sources then the insulin response is much lower as the release of energy is much slower, therefore you feel fuller for longer :)

try and keep red meats to a minimum, no more than once a week (can be hard/boring)

increase the amount of fish and chicken you eat and have various healthy snacks - fruit, nuts and some cereal bars are ment to be good.

Instead of going to the gym to do 1 and a half hours routine 3 times a week just try and do 1 hour in the gym so you dont burn yourself out, even less as you start out and build it up.

Set yourself small goals - x amount this week, reach waist size by y, or reduce amount of z eat by so much.

Be good to yourself, if you're doing really well, then somethin small wont ruin your diet, maybe a burger or wahtever it is you crave but make sure you deserve it and only every now and again, as in if you had a treat 3 days ago then you clearly need to wait another 4-5 days before your next one. be strict but not too strict.

Also make time for things you enjoy, it's not just about getting in shape but enjoying it at the same time so if you find you hate running and talk yourself out of it, find another exercise such as skipping or aerobics or something that is more fun. Try signing up to some classes, such as boxing or something that interests you.

Its about chaning your lifestyle and attitude to health really, which is a long process so good luck and enjoy it :D

Do not fool yourself to start gymming, lifting weighes and stuff and expect a quick weightloss.. If you go to the gym, only do stuff like running, spinning etc.

I'll always start with a week or a few days and eat VERY little food, just to shrinking my apetite. Keyword for weightloss is walking. Nice fast, long walks.. Before breakfast is great if possible.. like 40-60mins walk before breakfast is great. And walking for 60min+ in the night is great and a very nice and relaxing thing to do.

Im no food specialist, but just be thoughtful.. Also a great tip is to have a food and excersice "diary".. Get down what you eat, what kind of excersice you have done + current weight everyday.

Thats what I do anyway, and it works. :)

Weighing once a week is better imo Zenith.

Can fluctuate between days, same time every week has worked well for me.

That might be true Vlad.. Actually Im not really sure.

What Im doing right now, and which is it a very good alternative to lifting, is Boxercise. We have a few Great gyms in Sthlm who provides great boxercise instructors. Basicly you go there with a mate, or alone and hook up with someone over there and you'll take turns striking and kicking the arse of eachother :) Using pads and all that. Its actually really fun if you go there with someone who can really cheer you on, making you really high on adrenaline.

I also find it's possible a better way of working out, since its you who decide how hard you strike and have no weight providing resistance. Im no specialist so what do I know :p

o_O Spinning... As in... Turning around really really fast then falling over?

Skipping is what I do, as I can't stand running. Though, the way I do it now feels like run -_- I dislike the knees up to chest method.
