November next year?

Sounds about right.

They will probably claim to add another ground breaking thing to the game like a new paint scheme.

Actually it will be this year by all accounts. Sony are at GAME this coming Friday to allow us to play on GT 5, Move and 3D gaming. I am in the 10am session....

Sony have it properly stitched up - 3D TVs, 3D blu-ray and now 3D gaming with interactive 3D control.

I'm actually quite excited about 3D being used this way, unlike 3D movies which are pish imo.

Agreed. Sony might be lacking behind in the Console space but in the media space they are at the front and in total control. Not sure if that is a good thing but media is the big thing and to be perfectly honest the PS3 delivers all that now in one box (which was always part of Sony's vision for the console):

  • 3D gaming
  • 3D blu-ray
  • Move
  • Music
  • Photos
  • Video
  • Internet
I am not a Sony fanboy, I own all 3 consoles but I use my PS3 more than anything else not just for gaming but it is the only thing I use for media. Period.

It will be interesting to see GT5 (the trailers just ooze OH MY FUCK), Move (I personally believe it to be more accurate than Kinect) and 3D gaming this coming Friday.

Personally can't see 3D being any good in the home, unless you happen to have a screen that fills your field of view.

Mind you i feel the same way about 3D movies in the cinema too :ninja:

Hello fella!

Thing is that the masses will buy into this and today Sony have 3D enabled devices in every space. Something Nintendo and Microsoft simply do not.

I thought I was a fan of 3D after seeing Avatar, but then I got the blu-ray and saw it in 2D -- so much better!

Not sure about games. Apparently the 3D in Killzone 3 is insane, but I'd have to see it before buying into it.

New 360 missed a trick by not having a blu-ray drive. However it's my guess that this is because they want to keep pitching the machine at a lower price point than Sony to keep their momentum going.

Bodhi will doubtless attack me with a rusty spoon but it's always been my experience that with Sony gear you can get the same for less elsewhere. They've done nothing to impress me lately. That said I am glad that blu-ray won the format war as frankly segregating the market place again to begin with was a wankers trick.

3D has a place in gaming, it does not in films or TV. It can actually be USED.

Oh yeah, and Sony's future tech looks a LOT more impressive than MS's.

The price point difference between the ps3 and 360 is too small now to justify the lack of BD to keep costs down. It was at launch, but BD is cheap now.

As for the second point, generally speaking yes, but Sony have actually delivered with a very decent feature - cost ratio with the ps3. You cannot get a fully featured BD player and a media server and a console for anywhere near the cost of a ps3.

I only ever use my 360 for games, and less and less these days. My ps3 is used for all streaming content from my PC, all BD's and all DVD's and CD's too. It is a one box solution, and MS don't have the wiggle room with the current 360 to catch up IMO.

MS dont want a BD player because they want to keep pushing download rentals instead, they make alot more money from people renting a movie for a few days than they will from putting BD players in

The price point difference between the ps3 and 360 is too small now to justify the lack of BD to keep costs down. It was at launch, but BD is cheap now.

For that reason you can expect to see 360 prices slashed this winter as MS have very very healthy margains on the hardware now and can afford to make the price cuts on a scale that Sony cannot. The whole re-engineering for the 360-S was all about reducing costs so they could drive the price of the high end SKU down to £150 as soon as Sony drop prices below £200 and potentially taking a large bite out of MS's marketshare in the process.

As Sparx pointed out MS are making good money off movie downloads, which is revenue they would never see from Blu-ray disc movie sales. Five years in it doesn't make any sense for them to change direction now and they are well aware that anyone wanting Blu-ray can by a standalone for well under £100 anyway.

I would fully expect to see Blu-ray in the next generation MS console, purely because of storage space issues but let us be honest here, the lack of Blu-ray on the 360 has not hurt sales anything people originally claimed. 43 million strong and climibing, just coming off the back of a very strong month of sales with a new model much in demand. They aren't exactly in a postition of weakness at the moment, marketshare has doubled over the previous generation and they have great exposure to the general public this time around.

I thought the 360 made a perfectly decent media centre? I picked a PS3 due to blueray, if the Xbox had one then I would have probably bought one of them instead.

Bought battlefield 2 as a couple of mates have it on the PS3 but other than that there has only been a handful of games, though with GT on the horizon I think I will be using it as a games console a lot more, just need to pick a steering wheel now.

Theres nothing wrong with the media player on 360 it works perfectly well. Can either navigate through folders much like network places on PCs or use the media centre which is exactly the same as the media centre on PCs. Its a watery excuse PS3 owners use to try make PS3 sound better.

No it's not, I have both and the functionality on the 360 is shite, it's tied into windows media centre only. It doesn't play as many formats as the ps3 can through programs such as the excellent ps3 media server.

On the other end, the dvd playback and CD playback of the ps3 are up there with expensive standalone players, and you have lots of options for audio and video. Things that are all lacking with the 360.

While I agree that the 360 isn't as good for media as the PS3, it's not tied to windows media centre fella. It works perfectly well with my NAS.

I agree. I use my PS3 for a lot of vdeo streaming and as a blueray player and gaming and if there is a choice I will usually go with the PS3 version of a game. I hardly ever use my 360 anymore apart from to play the odd game and as I said several months ago in this thread, my Wii might as well be propping a door open as it hasn't been switched on in 18 months now. I don't own a single game that has any replay value on it.

Like i said it isnt just tied to Media Centre. And it seems to work better with Media Centre on Windows 7 too if you set it up properly.

What is sticking in my throat about the PS3 is the lack of FLAC and WMA lossless support; I need to use a PC and PS3 media server for transcode purposes and I'd like to get away from that.

I just use PS3 Media Server to transcode all my FLAC music.

Your first statement seems to be shot out of the water by your second?

So it doesn't work properly unless you use it with a media centre hosted on win 7?

I'm with you Ford, I paid for my live sub this year and it's been wasted. Not played anything more than a couple of hours of cod all year, I'm not renewing this year. I'll do the short term subs if I ever get hooked by a 360 online only title again.

I'd like to get away from that though. I think what I'm getting at is that the 360 and PS3 are neither the ultimate media solution (briefly discussed this with Nath) and I might go over to something like this:

The Dell Online Store: Build Your System

On that note (again, thanks for mentioning Nath :D ), there is an XBMC app for Android that allows your Android handset to become a remote control and media library browser / selector. I've just tried it out and it's absolutely ace - the text message / phone call alert to your TV screen is nice as it automatically pauses your content whilst you take a call.

How to use XBMC Android Remote to control your computer

I use the ps3 for media because it's wireless. I could buy the overpriced wireless for the xbox but then the price difference would be neglible.

Also my ps3 has a 500gb hard drive full of videos and audio which helps a bit :)

To be fair though XBMC on a windows or *nix box shits all over you're pathetic and limited console media centres :).

Nope. My PS3 has been thrashed within an inch of its life finishing off my PS2 back catalogue and then getting 1,000+ trophies :)

I think I popped a DVD in it once.
