It suggests a European wide minimum wage, which would suit you, because it would mean that people wouldn't have to travel across the EU for work.

You’re missing the point. There’s three main regulatory frameworks in the world. The world won’t acquiesce to a 4th that is tiny in comparison.

Yeeeesss....that would be because going from 4th to 5th has context, but even then it only has value as a statement if you say why.

"We're the 5th largest economy" on its own, does not have any worthwhile context.

As the productivity and intellectual capital advantages of the West level out with the rest of the world, then scale becomes the only real differentiator of economic power*. Saying "we're 5th" (or tenth or twentieth) doesn't mean much when first to fourth own 90% of everything. It's like being second to Amazon, you can make a nice living for a while but eventually everyone's gone to Amazon anyway.

(*yes there will still be affluent small countries who have a niche because of some specialism like commodities, desirable property or tax, but Britain isn't one of those countries, we're the M&S of the global economy; valuable to us but small fry and easily substituted to everyone else).
