Sorry, at what point would we destroy a Chinese ship in UK waters? We simply wouldn’t. Give them a close escort, certainly (as we did with the Kuznetzov when it sailed through the English Channel) but no-one’s in the business of lobbing missiles at the Chinese; this isn’t the 1930s any more. The idea is ludicrous. And the same is true in reverse. The Chinese are getting all pissy about the South China Sea but they aren’t shooting at the Americans or anyone else, but that still doesn’t explain why the Defence Secretary thinks the RN is still in the send a gunboat business.

I don’t agree with the sentiments in the article (Simon Jenkins is a knob) but all this Britannia Rules The Waves shite is just a Tory distraction to keep the proles happy. And those “Caribbean and Asian bases”? What’s the betting they’re just the Belize and Brunei bases the British already have with a lick of paint? No way is the current government going to splash out on real basing rights.

I mean we only last year regained our ability to launch planes from our aircraft carriers - something we hadn't been able to do for eight years - because we're not the power we were.

We have about 20 surface combat ships. The yanks have 300. China has more than that.

Its simple geographics, Russia nukes are very near China, Chinas are thousands of miles from Russias big cities and across the largest balistic missile defence sytem in the world.

They could just take out several main cities, very few Chinese nukes would get through.
