I am a teacher and I got my non- contact time covered so that I could go and see my 5 yr old twins Nativity.

The Head has just scuppered my plans, so I cant go. All the extra time and effort, hours and hours of above and beyond, and you ask for an hour -once a year when your class is already covered!

I have taken it bad. :(

Its like a form of torture having to sit through our Nativity x 10 watching all the mums watching their kids, knowing that mine dont have their mum -ill never get it back.

I understand if its a job where it cannot be accommodated -but in my profession it is possible, but the Head does not have kids/ does not understand.

Am I over reacting?

Nope, not at all. Dick move, even for a non parent. I'm nowhere near a parent, i talk bad about parents many a times(just ask on my opinion on strollers :p) and even i think that's just dickins behaviour and any person who had a bit of common courtesy would too.

Depends if there's a reason for it though Toht. If there isn't, then it's shit, but it could well be perfectly sensible.

True, but i was wondering on what a reason as such could be and couldn't come up with anything, epsecially since the class is covered.

Class covered, would take it unpaid.

And Ive not asked for time off for kids before?
Maybe she thinks, if she lets me will have to let others? But not really as most kids do an evening performance except mine cos they are so little.

She hates me?

There's a distinct possibility. It's not like women don't hate eachother at the workplace by default.

Though EVEN then, she's way out of line.

You got time to fix this? Go voer her head or some other risky thing like that?

Or, you could, ofcourse, call in "sick" ;)

Worst case scenario; explain to your kid that you need to fight the evil monsterlady at school, but that someone will tape it and you can watch it together with a tub of icecream later.

EDIT: Hey, if you feel gutted, you could say you feel sick to your stomach right?

I think it's time to "see a doctor" about it, bet "seeing a doctor" will cure that tummy ache too ;)

I know what you mean by being honest, but when someone f*cks you over, then it's in your right to correct the situation.

I think this is incredibly poor Russell, I feel really sorry for you.

I am a governor at our school and I am quite sure that our head would never pull a stunt like this, and would be very disappointed if he did. I'm afraid that there's not much I can say to help, I imagine that what she says goes, but it is still very sad.

I totally get this! Every now and then I need a day or leaving work early and I always get told just phone in sick or say you have a dentist / dr's or something but I always tell the truth and do I ever get time off no...

Sucks to be honest..

Oh here's another idea, more honest too;

Say that you're having a later lunch that day.

Then, at appropriate time leave for lunch.

This lunch ofcourse just "happens" to be at the same time as the play ;)

I hate to be a cynic and definitely hate thinking in this way but... how old is she. There might be a reason (not justification, reason) for why she'd resent you (or any other mother) seeing your childs nativity play. Certain situations can do odd things to a person, even if they aren't accustomed to said oddities...

The Head is lovely. She has been so supportive to me. She expects hard work and has high standards -and was only commenting on how good a teacher I have become the other week.

I just dont get it?

We do have another member of the team who is very close to the head, who is known to be very strange at times, and she has become involved in this.
Guess she could have had a little influence -her son is at boarding school?
That really mean though, so I cant be sure.
I do feel terrible though -cried and my little girl saw -had to day it was something sad on the TV.

I'd get it out in the open and say why you have gone above and beyond these past few weeks to 'repay' the fact you were told ('promised' if they said that) you could have the time off. Explain why it means so much to you.

If she still says no, get Tohtori to photoshop her with a horse cock.

You want;

- A horse cock hanging out her dress?
- A horsecock UP her dress?
- A lifesize horse cock having brunch with her?

I wonder if the reason you're not getting to go is precisely because the head doesn't have kids.

Sounds like bonkers teacher has scuppered it - probably out of jealous resentment of your sucess.

I'd try going back to your head and laying it on thick - if she's basically sound she should be swayed.

Me too. You do the right thing and then you wish you hadn't. That is truly awful. My sympathies. Breaks your heart when yo can't be there for your children.

Work to rule. When she asks why you're no longer prepared to work for no pay, remind her.

I'm finding it quite hard to get my head around the idea that a Head Teacher doesn't understand about this kind of thing. Did she have her empathy gland removed at birth? Does she never speak to parents? Weird.

However, the thing that's not clear from your post is the order you did things; did you make all the arrangements and then tell her? Or did you get permission, made the arrangements and they were subsequently withdrawn? If its the latter, then play holy hell and remind her that you as a school would be in a world of shit if you dicked parents around like that. If its the former, then I think you're on shakier ground. While it sounds petty if you've arranged cover, her nose may be out of joint if you went behind her back and presented your time off as a fait accompli. It would piss me off a bit (I'd still give you permission to go, because its a nativity play for fuck's sake, but I would be a bit annoyed).

:iagree: ^ This!

I have this with my work at times.
They ask you to do overtime or early starts, then question why you want time off.
Quid pro quo only works if both parties work toward it

Good news -spoke to her today.
It was a misunderstanding (fuelled by the crazy controlling teacher?). I can take unpaid and go.
She had to allow 1 other teacher to do the same, because I am.
She was not over the moon but did say 'no harm done'.
Relieved -thanks for all your comments -just off to do 3 hours planning for tomorrow now;)
