Distance from the exchange doesn't matter with fibre, it's only distance to the cabinet that matters now and that's about 100m from the door :)

arrr I see, mines not as quick tbh.

Mind you, it still fast enough for anything really, i would like some more upload tho as streaming (gameplay via twitch.tv) gets a little choppy at higher resolutions.

20x increase in upload speed, I bet that'll shorten your photo upload times to facebook, etc.

Yeah, unless you're in a house with a lot of heavy internet users I don't see the point.. my home connection is by no means 'great' but there's never a time when it can't do anything I want it to, unless I'm utterly abusing all the bandwidth with torrents... but even then all that does is cause a little buffering here and there.

Hardly any home users need 50mb download 5upload or anywhere near .. but I guess people love to waste money :ROFLMAO:

I use my connection to perform lots of backups and having a great upload speed is essential when doing restores.

It's also more than 5x faster than the upload speed I get with Virgin on their 60meg package.

Always knew Virgin were cheapskates :)

Doesn't cost that much more.

You must be jealous!!
Nah I'm on a 60mb dl 6mb upload connection (being upgraded for free to 120mb dl 12mb upload for some reason in a few weeks..) with 4 heavy internet users sharing the same connection ...

From 20mb to 50mb there was no noticeable difference really.. but it's part of a package so meh.

Only noticeable difference will only ever be download / upload speed. Web browsing won't really touch anything over 2mb, and pings on games won't ever change, my ping now is the same as it was on 512k/sec over ten years ago.

Coming from 1 Mbit connection, it makes a big difference. A shocking amount of the UK gets < 2Mbit - even in massive cities, e.g. Birmingham - so bring on the fibre

my connection is supposed to be 50Mbit. I have 50 at the exchange according to the operator. Somewhere 30 of them vanish :-/

I'm in two minds over fibre at the minute. My exchange has been enabled for BT Infinity, but I am unsure how much more bandwidth I need at the moment - I'm connecting at just shy of 8 megabits and that's fast enough for most things. Even HD content from the Playstation moviestore only needs about a 20 to 30 minute pre-load and I'm good to start playing it.

It's a good excuse to smash the missus' back doors in prior to watching a film.

in an aside, my street is the only street in a fully-fibered neighborhood that doesn't get fiber for private persons

I'm just glad that the Welsh ASSembly finally pulled the finger out of their ASS and kickstarted getting Wales fibred up.
£425million project to bring fibre to 96% of properties. Assembly ponied up £58mill, BT a couple of hundred mill, and a few other sources for the rest.

No infinity here and Virgin don't go this far either. What I don't get is that here, at my ex's place we get 20Mb/s and it's around 1.9Mb/s actual. Whereas at my new place I only get 1.5Mb/s connection speed. Same exchange, and my new place is closer. Haven't been there for a few days, what with the new one being born so I'm hoping the speed will have sorted itself out.

If it's only getting 1.5Mb/s, who cares if it sync's at 10Tbit, you'll only get 1.5Mb/s ;)

What the fuck are you on about? I fucking care. I'm paying for 20Mb/s connection speed and I'm getting 1.5Mb/s. From the same exchange I get actually get the top speed. The wiring in the house is no more than a year old either.

So it syncs at 20Mb/s but you really get 1.9Mb/s.

Not much in it. You might be closer to the exchange but who knows how many laps of the country the cable does before it gets to the exchange :D
