Noone can reply in a bad way on what i wrote, it's kinda constructed like this by using my cultural capital. In a way it's a showing off of what cultural capital is and what it can do.

As I said, I still have a drink to finish :p

In the original theory however, access to cultural capital is controlled by the dominant and therefore not all can have equal access to it.

We could put it like this realm points are a form of cultural capital - those who got to high realm ranks earliest made use of this and tried to shut down access to others (hence these were the people who moaned loudest about the 'rp' patch). They are also able to use this cultural capital (rps) to buy abailities (RAs) which enable them to continue to protect their advantage in the field. This is also accompanied by a 'doing down' of 'popular culture'. In other words slagging off those who dont want to play in the way they have determined has the most symbolic power attached to it (in the FH parlance fg vs fg rvr).

First let's put some thinks under prespective. You do realise the player-base here has created a form of a community with daoc being the thing they got in common.

As it is easy to guess, every community has some rules. Daoc has it's own rules, mainly the ones provided by mythic and they're the rules you agree to abide with every time you log on the game.

Parallelize that now with other types of communities, and to get a good example, take the community you live in. You have to follow some rules, and at the same time some ethics and/or customs. I will not take this discussion to the mythic rules which would be the common law you have to follow as your original questions regard daoc customs.

And yes, daoc has it's customs. Those customs are not created just like this, there is a power strugle in em.

Daoc, just to make it clear, has sub-communities. The ones supported by the game, like realms, alliances and guilds, and the type of communities that reside in fh or various other public spaces in the internet (irc etc.)

Those sub-communities customize their preferences, and as it is common in all human interactions, they try to impose them on others by attaching some type of ideology behind them. Try to have a look on the evolution of religion and it will clear up more.

Now.. how's your sociology? The idea of cultural violence and the theories behind it, rose during the 80s and the 90s. To cut a long story short, in the times we live in, is not the physical violence which is important, but the cultural one. This means that people with higher cultural capital than others, can impose themselves on people, which can also be taken as a type of violence, can also result to cultural rape.

And this is what's been happening in fh. Cultural violence at its best :)

Now remember, don't get things wrong. Cultural capital has a liberal sense. In the case of the fh dick-swing, regards knowledge of the game and some other related things. A person with high cultural capital in daoc means they can exersise their knowledge in such a way as to diminish "noobs".

Apply those things to your original questions and you'll have your answer :)

best post ive ever read on FH m8, shame i cant rep u again for some reason, dont hand them out very often, and must of been you last time. wish i could lay down the words like that sometimes. :worthy:

lol as if pips gonna be able to understand Gears reply (was a good reply though)

Theres 2 camps. The s^&% face newbs that basically add for whatever reason. Those newbs usually present the following arguements

a) It doesnt say in the rule book you cant add, so I add.
b) I got added on once, so I add on all
c) Its Irvr so I add
d) I pay my subs, when you pay my subs I will stop adding

The other camp doesnt add on 1v1 fights because its not really why they are playing. They are looking for a fight which is competative and actually tests their class and how they play. Same for FG's that dont add.

funnily enough those the leet boy lamers, (as the nice guy irls portray them) are horrible and agressive people that ruin the game and drive the nice guy irls away from daoc. The actual truth is the only thing that keeps thing game playable are the guys that dont add (and there bucket loads of them)... The rvr geography has got to a state now where 95% of players log in and go to their doorstep to rvr zone (crau, beno, bleed). A few players (and its very few) have the balls to go rvr in those zones, so the RVR end game has become a bit pointless. In mid SH and pips WL group are basically incapable of going anywhere else to rvr and spend the whole evening adding on anyone that comes to bleed. Which makes for crap rvr. Same for CLA and albion exiles in hib. Same for alb too. If this pattern carries on the game will be dead within 3-4 months because its just pointless. As a player you gotta show some balls and mix it up a bit, get on the boat, force yourself to enemies zones so the rvr population can be a bit more balanced otherwise the guys going abroad will eventuall get fed up for the 20:1 ration they are up against each time (and 15 out of those 20 are adders) etc.

--------

It all boils down to 1 thing. Newbs and good players. Newbs sux. Good players rox. Same as in when you meet idiots in real life and you meet nice people in real life. Daoc community is the same. Has its decent peeps and it has its numbnuts that cant play.

Its the numbnuts though that are the reason the game is dying.

NO one minds dying to an opponent in daoc, you might curse and whack your KB if it was a real close fight etc, you might whine that he used Timer of pwnage on you etc but thats like part of the fun....

... on the flip side everyone knows how it feels when run after run after run you just insta die to adds.... It becomes a pointless game, so you log, but next time u play its exactly the same, and the time after that, you play less and less untill u think fook it. Thats why daoc is dying because theres too much frustration and too many pointless runs dying to roglord casters etc.. (aka nice guys irl)

if you cant see this you are clueless. Nope it doesnt say in the rulebook you cant add... keep it up and there wont be a rulebook for much longer.

Think both Gear and Censi describe daoc quiet well.
Problem is that most ppl that understand the complexity of mmos and what actually happends within these frames, have quit the game or play very very occasionally.

Trying to give pip insight in this matter is just a watse of time.

But was a very nice post Gear. :)

Yes because obviously, anyone that doesn't agree with your playstyle doesn't understand the complexity of mmos.
