lol oh dear. So, anandtech, arstechnica and all the others lied? The keyboard lag is a bug that will be patched, of course Office spikes the CPU, it is FULL BLOWN Office running on an ARM core, you are trying to compare it with the performance of Apps when it is a Application, a much much bigger beastie. As for photo viewer, again it needs patching, the hardware is more than capable but that application has not been optimised enough. Unlike Android though Microsoft can use live update to roll out fixes for these things very easily. No rooting or waiting a year for a upgrade that never comes, none of the Jellybean farce where they make major changes but hardly anyone can get a manufacturer to update for hardware more than capable of running and as for iOS, well it's a closed eco-system and Apple run it will but the interface needs a massive overhaul and the levels to which they lock it down are extreme.

Oh dear?

I'm just pointing out what I have actually read, bug/glitch or not those issues shouldn't have made it into reviews, If they want their tablet to even gain some sort of market share then they need to sort their shit out.

Only thing I'd do with any apple product is to see if it blends.
Well that is just stupid. If you pay for it and then blend it you are a muppet. If you get given one and then blend it rather than sell it for about £30-£50 less than retail on ebay then you are a mug. :)

I will not get involved with the RT stuff until I get hands on. Reviews are based on the reviewers experience so it may have nothing to do with how you will get on. With all review sites I look for how stable it is and the hardware sections but the software is a personal preference.

But seriously I disagree completely with the interface needing an overhaul Apple are so successful because it is so simple. I love the fact that nothing is hidden in Menus if it is a Setting it is in Settings and I like that. But again Software is personal preference what works for me might not work for you, and I suppose that is where Android is better you can craft the experience that is right for you. But for the love of god stop putting it out there that my favorite mobile OS needs to be changed so I don't like it anymore :)

It doesn't need to be changed so much as updated bud, it feels it's age and then some. They can keep all the best bits but jazz it up, the hardware is certainly powerful enough. That is one area where I will go toe to toe with anyone, iPad is expensive but performance / price is superb and as much as I dislike Apple I cannot fault their hardware spec when it comes to mobile.

With keyboard £480 I think. Was going to be £399 to import from US but I didn't want to have to wait until December to get it/risk paying customs

Shall we merge this and the surface thread? and change the topic accordingly?

Seems a bit much. I know it's lighter and more Mobile than a laptop, but at almost £500 it's not doing itself any favours

All it does better is Office if that's what you want it for it will serve you well when they actually patch the bugs.

As far as apps go ill wait 6 months to see how the store is.

I still don't see how MS expect to get a decent share of the market with price tags like this, put the main tablets together iPad,HD kindle, nexus and windows on the same table with the price tags I see windows tablets being the last choice anyone picks unless they want it for Office.

Surely app developers aren't going to waste time and money to develop for something that has a tiny customer base? At least that is the problem WP7 has had since day 1.

Here we go again. There are already 10+ million copies of Windows 8 out there, as far as developers go it is a simple flag at the compile stage will create apps for either full blown windows 8, WP8 or RT. They don't need to hand code for each platform, they create the code, click a button and they get x86 or ARM compatible code, it's that simple.

Microsoft just created a 3 tier platform that developers can code across with ease, this is not WP7 with a tiny market share. It will be a marketplace in excess of 100 million clients a little over a year from now, the desktop sales of Windows 8 alone guarantee that. Wait and see what happens with the apps, it will suddenly explode, mark my words.

Maybe so, however I'm not an apple fanboy so i also see the iPad as being too expensive for what's on offer.

I see tablets as something bigger and better than a phone, smaller and less able than a laptop. I also think the price should reflect this so maybe £250-325 depending on hdd size etc

I got my surface last week at utterly love it.
It is fast, sleek, and beautiful to look at.
The engineering is incredibly well done and everything just works.
Apps wise Office is fantastic and a huge reason why I got it, Onenote syncs all my notebooks first time, I can open anything in my skydrive anywhere, all changes sync perfectly.
Other apps wise, its ok, there's a great news reader for rss feeds, good podcasts.

Music player and video player are alright but better ones will come. This is the beauty of Win8, a coder can be coding an app for Win8 desktop, making it WinRT compatible is as simple as ticking a checkbox. That is why surface will suceed, because coding apps requires no special adaptions.

I also have totally ditched my laptop, Surface is lighter, slicker and does everything I used my laptop for.
Internet browsing is sleek and a dream.

Surface also supports Exchange Active Sync so my pesky uni email account actually works with it. (so too does outlook 2013 but I haven't worked out how to make it do that yet)

Which keyboard are you using? How do you find it?

Using the touch keyboard, its a bit difficult on my lap (ie on the bus), but on a table/desk it shines. Its absolutely fine and I can type my normal keyboard speed. Its ability to differentiate between just resting your hands and actually typing is great, and I haven't had any problems with typing too fast for the surface etc either (a beta software problem fixed with automatic updates).
The touch cover itself is beautiful, lovely and thin and fine to type on. If I was going to type 4000 essays I might get a type cover, but for 2-3 page documents, emails, websites, forum posts etc, the touch cover is lovely.

Firefox is clunky as fuck, stick to Chrome on android, it's fuckloads better anyway.

Delighted it is panning out for you, had my hands on a test unit a few days ago and adored it, want one!

Just like I said, update will squash alot of the bugs very quickly, keyboard lag is all but gone for those who type 60 words a min or less.

Decided to try an Atom based Win8 tablet instead of the Surface.
Should have the same performance as the ARM based tablets, but has a proper windows instead of RT
Ordered the Asus VivoTab on amazon.de : http://www.asus.com/Tablet/Vivo_Tab/ASUS_VivoTab/
For a full i3/i5 core tablet I think I'll wait for haswell and better battery life...

Firefox adds flash and LastPass both are lacking on Chrome sadly.
Dolphin has a "proper" LastPass plugin and also has Flash. It works better than LastPass under Firefox which is an utter pain.

I have last pass working. Thanks for that. But how do you add flash. My standard test of red tube fails with a flash error.
