Proper lastpass support is brilliant I am but reluctant about my iPad mini showing up now. The lastpass browser on the iPad is beyond shit and as its so tied down not many browsers on it support add ins :(

I got my surface last week at utterly love it.
It is fast, sleek, and beautiful to look at.
The engineering is incredibly well done and everything just works.
Apps wise Office is fantastic and a huge reason why I got it, Onenote syncs all my notebooks first time, I can open anything in my skydrive anywhere, all changes sync perfectly.
Other apps wise, its ok, there's a great news reader for rss feeds, good podcasts.

Music player and video player are alright but better ones will come. This is the beauty of Win8, a coder can be coding an app for Win8 desktop, making it WinRT compatible is as simple as ticking a checkbox. That is why surface will suceed, because coding apps requires no special adaptions.

Was this the RT btw ?

Picked up an iPad4 for the missus as an early Xmas present while I was in the US. Opened it and set it up on my iTunes so I could play with it on the flight back and I have to say that I was blown away with the screen quality, ease of use, browsing experience and so on. As such, I've stolen it for myself and as I'll be back to the US in December I'll probably pick her one up then. I am going to head to the Microsoft Store in Times Square though and have a good play with one of the Surface tablets first. I do think it has potential as a platform for sure.

My main issue is that I've already chugged the Apple kool-aid and the fact I could login to the iPad and have all my music, TV shows and films downloaded to it within a few hours was a big win for me. The quality of the screen and things like the Sky Sports and Sky+ apps, Netflix and the iPad-specific Monkey Island 2 remake didn't hurt either.

I'm quite feeling the need for the Surface Pro. Roll on January (assuming decent-ish battery life and non-lol price).

The screen is that good that anything else you look at you can tell straight away that the screen on whatever you look at it just totally inferior.

A friend has the Nexus 7 and he came round the other day and his words were "this iPad screen is just ridiculously good".

Got to say, still loving this whole iPad thing. Spent the £21 on iTunes Match and within a couple of hours, all my ripped mp3s and suchlike were all available on the iPad. Been using it for browsing in the front room, watching moves, listening to podcasts, reading books and playing some games. Speedball 2 fercrissakes! That made my day and no mistake!

Just returned from 3 weeks in US and have two MS Surface tablets. One is a XMas present for my son for school use. Have to say I love it, great product. The big selling point for me is MS Office which is fully compatible for Office 2010 on my work laptop. So I am able to present and even edit PowerPoints. I have the Micro DVI to VGA and HDMI cables so connecting to projectors is no issue. I was even able to use my Logitech R400 Presenting mouse thingy. Not found a device yet that won't work. Even a USB 3 Ext. SATA HDD kit. I have upgraded the memory using the MicroSD slot behind the kick stand. $49 (Amazon) for a Sandisk 64Gb Ultra. So 128Gb in total for memory. I have some Mp4 movies on it which I watched on the way back from Seattle to Dubai. 9-10 hours of usage before I had to think about recharging.

The USB and MS Office is a huge draw for me, being able to use those products rather than coverting to PDF like I used to do on my iPad. The tactile Keyboard is a must also I really do not like the standard one that comes with it. Only app I really need for now is Google Earth and I could pretty much do 90% of my work on it. Wife will get my iPad now.

With keyboard £480 I think. Was going to be £399 to import from US but I didn't want to have to wait until December to get it/risk paying customs

Paid $600 in a MS store Mission Viejo in SoCal. Tactile KB is $100. MicroHD - VGA $40, MicroHD - HDMI - $30. Also got a spare PSU but cant remember the price :). When you get it do all the updates then run it again but view and check the optionals to, if you don't the Office does not upgrade to the full version - stays at the factory installed "Review" Version.

Yes, i have the touch type and after a few days (well 10 now) i can type at full speed on it. Its so so thin, thinner than any apple case/keyboard combos. The type case is apparently just as good as any laptop chicklet keyboard.
The doubling as a case/cover is a masterstroke.

MS have just released pricing details for the Surface Pro. $899 for the 64GB model and $999 for the 128GB model. Don't think they come with a cover tho...

I would have liked one of the surface tablets for obvious profesional/study/office reasons etc, but they are really pricing me out of it atm I'm thinking that if I ever get a tablet now it would be a nexus7 or so.

For professional/office reasons just get an RT. it does email, office etc. What more do you need? i love it and really, when i think about how I used my laptop, it was all office/onenote, which is free with WinRT

So, with the surface being mahoosively priced - is the Nexus 7 worth it.

Thinking of getting the g/f one for xmas as primarily an e-reader but also whatever else...

I've got a Nexus 7 in my stocking this Christmas! :)

What else did you consider?

TBH, she reads off her SGS2 quite a lot - but it would make a rather spangly present. I just don't know whether the extra 3 inches is worth it...

If you purely want an e-reader, I'd get a pure e-reader. As said, they're much better at it and cheaper.

If you have never had a iPad then yes. If you have had an iPad this feels like a cheap imitation.

I sold my iPad 3 when i got a Nexus 7 but it lasted less than a month. It is not in the same league as iOS. So I sold it and got an iPad Mini which is the best of both worlds and perfect for me. I honestly think if its in your price range it is the superior device.

Had extended play with ipads. They impress me as much as the rest of apple's products I'm afraid to say. Overpriced and overhyped tbfh. But mainly overpriced.

Really, I still think this:
Using a touch interface instead of a mouse is shit.
is 100% correct.

It's like going from PC gaming to a console.

However, my missus does like reading on her SGS2. I'm guessing the nexus 7 will go a long way to stop her getting eye strain and she can still watch iplayer on it - propped up against the window when she's doing the washing up. ;)

The only thing that's making me think no to that is that what's the point of her having an SGS2? It's a lot of money for just a screen-size upgrade.

I looked at the Surface RT (too expensive), iPad (too expensive, everything else I have is Android so it didn't fit with my gadgets) and Galaxy Note 10.1 (too expensive). The Nexus 7 is at that sweet spot where it's not too expensive but still does everything I was after.

Surface RT has been "jailbroken" in the last few days so that ARM compiled apps can be sideloaded without going through the Windows store.

Got her the Nexus 7 for xmas. She loves it.

Can't say I'm sold on these tablet things tbfh. I'm sat on my settee, in front of my 42" telly with a keyboard on my lap and a mouse next to me. I can do everything I want from a computer with a proper control system.

When I go out, I go out. When I'm downstairs I'd rather use my netbook tbfh. I like having a proper keyboard.

Still. It's pretty ;)
