New ATI cards

Hi guys!

Anyone using one of the ATI 9700 Pro video cards for DAoC yet? I know the game engine itself isn't up to the level of performance the card offers, but I'm going to upgrade ahead of the SI release and would like to know if anyone is using this card and whether they have any problems with it at all....

Thanks for your input,

Jup.

9700 Pro

I'm using a 9700 Pro (a Crucial one), runs well in game and is a improvement over my Geforce 3, though not had time to try it out in a big Zerg yet :)

Very stable and has run every game i've tried so far without issues (apart from the one below). This is on a AMD Via box with a SB Audigy just for information.

One little niggle is that it doesn't display red and white cloaks correctly, other than that its fine. (See edit, left this in, in case anyone else has this problem)

As you can tell this is my first ATI "game" card so theres quite a bit to pick up on (always used 3dfx/Nvidia before).

(BTW using the latest beta drivers for xp and 98)

Mercurial Lazarus
Lvl 50 Cleric
Lionhearts
Prydwen Alb

<EDIT: All sorted now - just had to set the mipmapping in the drivers one notch over towards the Quality setting>

<ANOTHER EDIT: Zerg performance is ok but not stellar>

Thanks for the info Mercurial... I would expect you are hitting the limits of the game engine rather than the card, but would you say it's still better than the GeForce3?

In my opinion geforce 4 ti4400 is the best value even though g4 ti4600 is the best it has a fair difference in price for something that performs only a tiny bit better.

As for that ATI card its pretty good but nvidia seem to run every game well without any flaws.

One issue with the the ATI card (and has always been an issue with ATI cards) is the driver support. It sucks. Alot.

Flatmate just got a 9700, Crucial one, and the first card he got was messed up, serious memory problems on the card (even the POST screen was messed up, not a good sign).

Respect to Crucial though, who RMA'd it in 3 days, but he is still having problems getting it to run stable. Has tried every driver version, 2 different motherboards, full re-install of the OS a few times, but no joy. Driver issue, always is with ATI.

Yes, the specs look good on it, but nothing better than a GF4 Ti4600 can do, especially given the fact the GF4 actually does it, something the ATI is struggling to do.

Seriously, nVidia all the way, only cards with technology and support to match :(
