I drive a Kia for Work and the Sat Nav is shit. It does not have postcodes that are two or three years old and at the Service they promised the most recent Maps are installed. I was expecting a "there is a upgrade to the bla bla system which is £1200" but nothing.

You can probably download/upgrade yourself off a pen drive.
I updated the i8s firmware that way. Which I found hilarious as I had to reboot the car afterwards by turning it off and on again.

Nice but that is £135 for that car the TomTom is £119 after the cash back and has lifetime map and HD traffic. Plus I already bought it :) I tend to buy first research and find out I messed up later haha.

It is a 2013 C'eed but it is a company car so I have no idea if it is part of the Map update program. It looks like it could be because the guy told me it was up to date after the last service.

People actually pay for sat navs these days? Been using Google Navigation on the phone for about 3 years now, never had an issue and gets upgraded with new functionality all the time. It's arrival time.predictions including traffic seems absolutely spot on.

The satnav in VWs, Audis and Seats is terrible.

I also just use my phone, so much easier.

Unless you holiday in Mongolia, or you're a travelling rep doing 30k miles a year all over the country, satnav is a waste of money in my opinion.

Yeah, I said it.

With google maps and satnav available for free on your phone, I don't get it. Navigating the UK is not that fucking hard. The only time I've had to use satnav was getting to an actual address in Manchester and London in the last mile of the journey. Getting to the cities themselves was a piece of piss.

As you say its the last couple miles that its really useful. I can get to most places without sat nav in the uk. However it was really useful in france. And is good for the last mile or so on most of my business trips and going on holiday.

Now adays its also useful when they can id blocked roads and recalcto move you around it.

I agree with you to a point but my sense of direction is bordering on non existent. Plus Traffic plus the other week I went to 18 different houses all around London to install phones. The Copilot on my phone and Google Maps on the phone were both ok but the traffic on the TomTom made it a good choice for me.

Satnav on my Audi was downright dangerous; tried to take me the wrong way down a one-way street more than once.

I wouldn't bother with satnav at all, except...if I go back to the UK I'll get murdered on data charges if I use maps on my phone a lot. Once they fix data roaming though (2017?) even that issue goes away.

Have to admit I'm rather taken with the new Audi setup though, and it uses Google if you option it.

I need satnav to get out the end of my road, my sense of direction is appalling, but as @Bodhi says, I'm surprised satnav's still sell due to google maps and other satnav apps on phones

I can confirm the virtual dash on the Audi is sexual. Not sure if the satnav is any good.

I am not sure if it varies across models but it pisses me off you have to a town, then a street in.

Why can't you just stick the postcode in like on google/android.

I was stuck on the M25 the other week, was like a car park, wanged in the inlaws postcode and it took me on a nice diversion, no messing about.

I can put a postcode in mine and it has traffic avoidance too :)

That looks like a masterpiece of shitty design, created by someone in an office rather than driving a car. There's so much clutter there it's unreal. The tachometer doesn't need "1/min x 1000", that's redundant. The fuel range and fuel gauges could be merged into one. There's no need for the lines between E and F when your indicator is a system of bars. Same thing with temperature, in fact, why does any modern driver need to know coolant temperature? Just warn us when it's abnormally hot or cold. And don't get me started on that disaster of a map, jesus, even on a desktop that thing would give my eyes AIDS.

Anything to do with a car interface should be big, simple, chunky and piss easy to read in only 2 seconds. I want drivers looking through the windows, rather than squinting at a display like the above.

You can customise the whole thing and suppress the things you don't want and include the things you do. That's just a screenshot.

This - it can be made as simple as you like, or if you don't need things you can have one big satnav.

I don't think drivers should have much more choice than what display they're looking at. Some cars now come with Facebook integration ffs, that kind of shit should be banned. Give some drivers the option and they'll be watching telly on that thing.

Look inside a Volvo, look at the stereo and aircon controls. That's how things should be done. You don't need to look at things, you just feel for them and do whatever you need to do.

Yes I don't understand social media integration. I like the fact I can get in the car and not be driven up the wall by other people's banal and beige status updates.

is there a beige style for Freddyshouse? That would be so much better than green!
