More Planetside gubbins

been playing VS for 6'ish week now with a few folks from the savage forums anyways...

on the AI - Max front

VS has the jumpjets they also have the nice purple armour and fast firing lazer guns(small ammo clip tho)

TR can lock themselfs down... while locked they cant run about but the damage they deal is doubled... making this great for indoor camping but pants outside
NC are great at close range basically the max is a large shotgun, pants at anything but face to face combat, lucky they come with a built in shield(cant fire when its up) that allows the user to get close to your target without taking damage

just hit br12 last night, ended up going darklight 1st then health regen

This is how ive spent my certs so far
AI-Max, AMS, Medium Assult, Reinforced armour, Combat engineering. Mines are great but the turrets suck

Thinking of getting sniping or AV weapons next

ps Xtro, while ya NC give there main battle tank a go... its a real blast

Well nc max > tr max in terms of sheer firepower, but i dunno VS MAX's are a tough nut to take down.

I find that even tr's locked down are really easy to take down, because you can usually get BEHIND them and shoot them in the back beore the guy even realises he can't turn round without unclamping.

I think thats me settled then. VS AI MAX it is. Unless you all think AA or AV (plasma grenades? Gren launchers suck in every other game) are better.

I don't want to sign up, pay per month, then make some sucky choices.

Wills you can unlearn one cert a day free and unlearn any other certs at the cost of 24 hours before you can learn others, so if you buy a cert then play with it a bit and think f00k i don't like this its easy enough to go back.

VS AI MAX is absolutely useless if you come up against any other sort of MAX in an area where you can't use the jumpjets. You're toast in seconds. In fact it's not really all that good at taking out anything but the most lightly armoured infantry. I gave it a try and the jumpjets are about the only thing that'll keep you persevering with it.

MAXs in general have a big drawback in that all you can do is fire the suit's weapon - probably a good idea to learn one or two tho for the situations where they are useful. Eg - the VS AA MAX is damn good for "encouraging" Galaxies to find another base to do their drop at

Does the beta cost anything? I briefly went to download it from fileplanet earlier but it asked me to subscribe, I presume it wants money to download the beta.

Does playing the beta cost you any money or is it free? I assume it's an open beta or something?

I should have looked through but I'm really pushed for time tbh :>

If the jetpack is anything like Tribes in its style you'll find that the hardcore tribers become pretty awesome at using it

Has anyone tried the other VS MAXs? I want jumpjets a lot (I played T2 a little, I know how fun they are). The AA looks interesting, guided rockets against air, dumbfire against ground targets.

The VS AA MAX is OK (ish) against aircraft but the projectiles go pretty slowly. You only have 6 rounds before you have to reload and you're going to have to hit a Reaver probably seven or eight times to take it down.

It's hard to tell how effective these are because the combined effects of the speed of the projectile and the transatlantic lag mean that it's bloody difficult to keep the target in the reticule long enough to guide the missile to target.

Against ground vehicles it's OK - takes a good few rounds to destroy anything moderately heavy though.

I haven't tried the VS AV MAX and I haven't seen anyone else dumb enough to either It's a complete waste of space....

The beta itself costs nothing.

However the only way to get on the beta now is to either subscribe to fileplanet which costs $6.95 dollars(£4.34) or find someone who will let you share there account(you can play on more than one server at the same time with one account and theres 3 servers).

The beta has never and won't ever be what you think of as a usual open beta. Initially they had a small exclusive beta and then ditched the NDA and just invited 20,000 more people from the application list. This is the final 'open beta' stage that were at now.

Yeah - supposedly network upgrades. Servers are back up but it looks very likely that some muppet has screwed up the DNS entry for the authentication server

Posted early this morning our time(Tuesday night there time) by TwistPS on beta forum:

Apologies for not posting this earlier.
There is some network maintenance going on tonight that will affect Planetside (actually all SOE games). Service will be returned by Wednesday morning.

As for Planetside specifically, we will be posting a patch tomorrow that addresses several stability issues, bug fixes, and as much other stuff as we can get in and test first. Patch notes will be posted.

Yeah but they've got a message on the news page that they're back now - it's been there for a couple of hours now. However logins time out almost instantly (looks like a missing or wrong DNS entry) and both the beta and non-beta forums are borked.

You can ping the actual game servers but the auth server seems to have gone awol....

No. The beta site fell over at around midday today - well to be more accurate the auth server for it fell over (or disappeared).

They're not having a good week that's for sure

Not really. SOE are running the beta servers but Ubisoft are the Euro publishers and are apparently going to be running the Euro servers. Let's hope they know what they're doing eh?

well fuck me, I arrive home from work thinking "cool I can play planetside" I turn on my monitor hoping to see a nice 1.3 gig Planetside file on my desktop but am instead greeted by popup box saying "your connection to the server timed out".

Guess it was never ment to be.

Im glad i did. Its already resumed 10 times and the DSL went down for 2.5 hours in the middle of it.
