At the moment computer monitors are zero-rated for import duty. But advances in technology have led to the European Union Committee on Excise Duties wanting to reclassify monitors as 'all-purpose' devices and impose the higher rate, which currently only applies to TVs and plasma monitors.

It stinks to be honest.. It would be interesting to see just what percentage of people actually use their monitor for family viewing. There may well be some really smart LCD 40" + out there, but your average user I presume does not use their current LCD monitor for cosy get together's!? Pringles and Toffee Crisps on tow...lol :D

I see the point of LCD screens being multi purpose, but this all seems like a lot being done without input from consumers?

Yet another attempt to grab all the money they can on indirect tax and then wonder why people complain or try to buy abroad and get back in without declaring etc.

I've had trouble with my iiyama, it's a vision master 1451 and to date it's broke twice. Granted the replacements are free and usually delivered within two days of ringing custom support but really, they shouldn't be fucking up within a year.

And damnit, i planned on buying a new TFT monitor once i had a bit of cash. Hopefully i'll mange it before this 'potential' rise.

Russell Cole, Viewsonic's European LCD product marketing manager, said Dutch Customs already backdates the duty for some products imported just before Christmas 2003.

Better get yourself a DeLorean then )
