Well, really you should ask on the tech forum but it's not spyware.

You need to go to Administrative tools (either in the start menu or in control panel) and double click on Services. Then find "Messenger Service" and right click - properties and then set it to disabled, stop it and click ok.

Don't worry, it's nothing to do with MSN Messenger.

Try changing your options in messenger to only receive messages from people who are already in your contacts.

still then they should have created it that it only recognizes certain ips(and having it is good, but why have it automatically on as standard?).
There are more off these things in windows that are auto turned on, when it actually lowers the safety of the pc and has no use turned on, unless you know how to use it. However those people can find the place where to turn it on aswell.

I might be wrong, but to me it looks like MS sometimes just allowes stuff, which is only rarely used and lowers the security of the system. (not a rant just an observation off me).

While your points are valid, how does one define what IPs a box should accept messages from? After all Windows is meant to be a 'noob' friendly operating system.

Nevertheless, It could be set up to accept messages from a certain subnet, but what if you are part of a network with multiple subnets. For the 'ordinary' home user, this kinda stuff is probably past them. Beside - sufficient firewalling would prevent abuse ;)

I could be wrong... if so feel free to correct me :)

//edit - this should really be moved to teh tecnation forum imo

It should be disabled as standard. Users advanced enough to want to use it will know how to turn it on, or can learn.

It's also worth going to www.blackviper.com and reviewing ALL the services you have running (I'm linking to the XP guide there but he has win2K one as well).

One of the first things I did when setting up XP :).

-Ath, happily back in Linux for desktop now :p
