DOOM 3 is scary because of many things whispers in the wall, constant noise of machinery and people talking the list is endless.. but as you say D3/HL2 entirely different games but both the same type of game in a different mould..

I just prefer a game with scary atmosphere i lost count of the number of times ive jumped so far in d3..

HL2 will be good but like i said i prefer a scary dark game as apposed to a all out action shooter with a story.. and to be honest the doom 3 story if u can call it that is'nt all that bad.. the PDA journals you pick up and read/listen to auidos just add to the atmosphere.

The voice acting on the audios is very good i think it really makes the atmosphere believeable...

im NOT saying they are all the same but they all follow the same mould as in kill bad guys in this area move to next area kill again.. its the atmosphere and the storyline which drives me on.. and HL2 aint gonna be any different sorry

HL2 will be much better imo, and spawn better mods, CS source for a start, but at the end of the day its just what you like, we're all different thank god :)

id games are all about one thing, and one thing only: The Art of Killing, which is great, because sometimes you just want to kill stuff. D3 differs slightly in that they've introduced an atmosphere into the game, which was lacking in D1 and D2 - they were after all the epitome of run and gun.

HL/Far Cry etc differ in that they try to draw the player in through story-telling, making the player feel involved in what's happening around them beyond just shooting things - interactive action films if you like.

I prefer the latter, but id will always have a warm place in my heart reserved for them, because all of their games, despite their simplistic structure in the SP environment, are excellent, each and every single one of their games from D1 onwards I have played through to completion multiple times.

Considering Half-life 1 had a more varied game experience than Doom 3, I think you'll find it will.
Yes it did. Kill spidery head sucker things for 3/4 of it, then go to a shit alien world which ruins any atmosphere the previous 75% of the game had.

I'm sorry but I thought Half-life was shit. Really really shit. I had more fun playing SiN (remember that?). For a First Person SHOOTER, there really wasn't enough shooting in it.

I agree with Swift however. Most of the complaints so far seem to stem more from a lack of talent on the gamesplayer's part than a lack of decent coding on id's. I bet the same people played it through for the first time on Easy, just in case they got hurt. I of course went for Veteran, having made the previous two games my bitch on Ultra-Violence. It's quite hard, but nowt a seasoned Doom vet like myself can't handle.

I ran through it on medium and after a short while it became very easy. Fear is what made it tough - or at least, made you think it was tough.

Anyway, I then tried it on Nightmare, and got knocked down to 25% health just by standing around the landing pad area for a bit too long - dunno why. I then got killed by the first armed zombie I encountered :\

Might give it a go on veteran, but can't be arsed to fumble throuigh the pda's looking for keycodes etc.

Absath says this about the duct-tape mod said:
By the way, those duct tape mods are retarded. The lights are too bright, you can't turn them off, and it ruins the entire aspect of the game which makes you choose between readily available firepower, and the ability to see in dark corners. Jeez, you guys just don't want any surprises, do you?

in case you missed it, the duct-tape mod allows you to "tape" the flashlight to your weapons. I agree with the man though, as the flash to weap switch is there for a reason imo. not that the mod isn't handy, but you know what I mean.

Absath is from ctrl+alt+del, but it seems I can't nest urls in quotes. heh.

Ah glad i aint the only one who thought HL wasnt much at all either... i think i got to somewhere outside where this apache was shooting me by that time id had enough anyway i thought the game dragged on too much tbh..

I also like the fact u cant have a torch fixed onto weapons.. game wouldnt be as dark then.. i mean its really made me jump a couple of times when ive switched on the torch to see a fat fucker about ready to take a chunk out of my face..

Anyone else like the cool effect as the deamons disintergrate into nothing when u kill em? is kinda like the vampires in Buffy when she stakes em

I quite liked the effect, but I'd rather they didn't so I could sit and mutilate their corpses with a chainsaw :\

heh, wait until you get to the lab where there are lots of alien monsters in large plastic cylinders (like luke in SW ep 5). Just walk up and look closely at the Imp.

hehe.

Are we going to get into my consoles better than your console soon, or my Spectrums better than your Commodore.

I'm enjoying Doom so far, atmosphere is great especially in a dark room with 5.1 sound.
Also to anyone interested there has just been a Co-op mod released for Farcry so now you can run around shooting shit with 3 mates - Linky

Spending the first few hours (of what should have been gaming time) searching around on the net for ways to fix their game ain't the best way to get a good first impression of a game.

It better be uphill from here.

Seems to be a problem with soundstorm and surround sound. At first I got crackling sound but after reading some threads by people with same problem I set sound acceleration to basic, but now the sound cuts out completely at random intervals.

Seems the only way is to bind a key to resetting the sound settings which you have to push every time the sound screws up. No wonder the guy at game gave me a little speech about how they aren't accepting returns on doom3.

More likely their not accepting returns so people can't copy it then just take the cd-key to play online and return it, pretty common in my experience.

Apparently ASDA leave the manuals in the open cases on display, so if one were so inclined one could steal the manual and play online free.

But that would be wrong.

Game stopped taking returns on PC games - because Eidos told them to do it basically. They threatened to stop supplying Game with their products, so Game capitulated, and in the process probably lost a lot of customers - they'll not even give you your money back, which is a breach of statutory rights.

Me for one. If I buy a game and it doesn't work - Painkiller for one didn't want to start on my system at all - then I would like to think I'd be able to take it back. Fuck them, I'll be buying in HMV or Virgin from now on - and I've been a regular customer of Game's for 12 years now.

I can understand the retailers point with returns, its a fine line between keeping your customers happy and not having your refund policy abused.

You cant make a profit by allowing people to buy a game, play or copy it and then return it. Which lets face it, is what a lot of people do.

If a game doesnt work because your system does not meet its requirements, then the product itself isnt at fault, there is no obligation for a refund.

I think there is a need for a change in the law regarding digital media. You shouldnt be able to return a movie or game or music, unless there is a product fault that can be proven. And even then I think the product should be replaced, not refunded. This would stop a lot of piracy quickly. Blockbusters is tehre for epople who just want to try something.

Well, you can't take a new car back to the dealers when it shows a fault, and demand your money back. So your statutary rights only extend so far. Personally, I've never done what some people do, and return a game for the sake of it. If I did return a game, I'd like to see GAME staff stop me from getting my money back. Sitting on the counter while loudly demanding my rights would soon get the till open. If not, I'd inform Trading Standards, let them get fined (and me compensated).
