ooh, aliens with a proper engine and atmosphere? *cums*

I dunno Durz, it may well be that id has their eye on higher ground, and that D3 is in fact as you say a tech demo or proof of concept. I'd almost hope so, and wonder what they're going to make :)

Its more like an interactive hollywood movie, has all your typical cliche's and fantastic graphics. But when it comes down to it, thats all that keeps you wanting more, after the first few levels the monsters jumping out of 'a cunningly disguised-as-a-wall door' behind you, the 'scary' factor gets real tired. Mainly because you can see it coming every time, and you know there is nothing you can do about it.

I mean what was it doing in there in the first place? If I was some hell demon that could shoot exploding fireballs and walk on walls, the last thing I would be doing is hiding in a closet. Jumping from the celing or something fair enough, or even spawning in a glowy red streak of lightning, but waiting in a cupboard?

But the absolute worst is to open a door to have something leap at you and tear your face off, with absolutely no time to react. Even if you do manage to get a shot off your not gonna stop it, so you spend the next 20 secs spinning round shooting wildly hoping to hit something. I think Lowtax put it best..

Well the flashlight juggling physics fall into that description as well; if you've got the flashlight then you are defenseless but can see what's killing you, and if you have a gun then you can defend yourself but you can't see what's killing you. Sure you know that your health is being gnawed away by a plastic spider of some sort, but you are unable to locate the exact position of this spider due to the fact that the lights are all out and every time it hits you, your character spastically flings his head 180 degrees backwards like a retarded child after licking a tazer. "

Swap to the shotty when you open doors then ;), the monsters practically kill themselves in that situation.
Alternatively try using ducttape. :) (I haven't btw)

I sortof agree with Bodhi, but I agree more with Big G. The graphics are amazing as everyone knew they would be, and in terms of dynamics the engine allows for a lot more flexibility, like..
the excellent computer consoles, being able to manipulate a fairground-esque grabber to pick up toxic drums, etc
..for example.
In terms of "new stuff" I don't think it really breaks the mould a great deal - a lot of the "woo thats cool" experiences are largely due to the advancements in the engine itself as mentioned above. The core of the game, as is de rigueur for FPS nowadays, is point-click-findkey-opendoor-repeat ad infinitum.

In my opinion it's more of a technology demo than anything else, which I'm sure is ultimately what ID intended. I'm quietly hoping someone will bring out an Aliens total conversion using the engine as it would be perfect for it.

I was thinkin the same myself, the engine lends itself so well to a Aliens TC ... on that note anyone remember aliens vs predetor on the jag 64 :p

I would probably be more scared if I didn't have to turn the graphics down so much that they look retarded. I only have a AMD Athlon 2500+ XP/Radeon 9200/512mb and it's only really playable after all the peripherals are off unfortunately, and the people look like undefined blobs. It's still playable, albeit repetitive, and seems good, though nothing special. The problem with being unable to see can be fixed with the pistol-flashlight mod. I also think an Aliens mod would be perfect (GAME OVER MAN GAME OVER).

Far Cry > Doom III... graphics, AI and gameplay wise.

And the Doom AI sucks arse. The atmosphere is cool (for awhile) but Resident Evil still has the better zombies.

That's just made me not want to buy the game...

Are you quite, quite off your rocker? Doom 3 looks so much better? Far Cry is prettier in a sense because you're on a lovely desert island, but Doom 3 has far better grafix!

Tbh that just makes me think Lowtax is a retarded child with a lot of experience in tazer licking. The darkness issue generally isn't a problem i find - you can tell roughly where the demons are by the noises they make - spray that part of the room until the noises stop - when you hit something you'll hear the groan and see the blood. It's hardly fucking rocket science is it? Christ did he never play the first two Dooms? There were loads of pitch-black areas in them, and you didn't have a flashlght to help you pinpoint where people were.

Still he's proved something. Write an article slating something everyone else seems to enjoy, and you'll get hits. You won't make yourself look intelligent in any way shape or form, but you'll get hits......

Might pick it up from work today. I hate games where the lowest online price is still the same as the highstreet price :/

pitch black areas? I can't seem to recall tbh, but perhaps all the drugs have scrouged the memory from my brain. I do recall lighting changes, but it's quite possible that duke nukem is messing with me (not literally) and I'm remembering gaming moments incorrectly.

as to your other point Bods, that's just it for me. *you* like it, *I* may like it, but nearly everyone else who voiced their thoughts, either here or on the interweb, seem to like bits of it but also say that it gets old very very quickly. sure, it looks pretty and sounds great, but there's nothing new in it and it's repetative. tbh I'm afraid it will bore me to tears half way through :(

It's a great game and a great looking game but having played it all the way through it is basically a tech demo.

I played through most of it until I go to the end of the hell level and thought "sod it" and cheated the rest of the way mostly cos I wanted to see what all the cool monsters looked like but also cos I was bored with the format and just wanted to get to the end.

When you have some winged baby thing or spider ripping your nether regions to pieces and its completely impossible to even point your gun downwards because every time you get hit you flail around wildly. Even when you do manage to aim downwards, you then have the secondary problem of actually being able to SEE whats gnawing on your thighs. Its fine when 'you can hear some groan in the distant darkness' just lob a grenade in the general direction and watch the guts fly.

When things spawn in your face its a slightly different story..

Well i just bought it after having it for a week or so for a serial key. I feel all golden and glowy.

Its a damned good game, its an fps so there isnt any unicycles, supermarket shopping trolley sweeps or soft drink micro management in it.

As far as fps' go, its very absorbing, violent and gory. I like the fact that the torch has to be selected, i like the fact that when i get torn to shreds i dont just stand there and look the same direction after a pinky has just taken a chunk out of my behind. I also like the insane darkness of it all, its creepy and puts you on edge.

And then theres the graphics. Well i dont need to mention them.

One thing i dont like is a 'proper' single barrelled shotgun, you know the one that could take zombies out from 100 meters, the shotgun ingame seems to be a crossbreed of the 2 barreled one and the shotty that i loved. Im sure someone clever agrees with me and makes on for it tho.

Farcry had arguably a better storyline and a more open and unrestrained level design, but Doom 3 eclipses it graphically.

I really, really hope they bring out a 3rd installment of the AvP series using this engine instead of the Lithtech one - the engine is perfect for it. All you'd need is multiplayer co-op vs Aliens, all the sounds from the movies (the first 2 games managed this pretty well), some quality level design and you'd have a sure fit hit.

(Incidentally I couldn't even play AvP or AvP2 as the Marine. At all.)

It wasnt really a challenge Swift, I dont hate the game, I quite enjoyed it. But the real reason I played it through to the end was because I wanted to see what the next level 'looked' like. Not because I was loving the 'tension' waiting to see which seemingly innocent looking piece of wall the next monster was going to jump out of.

Considering Half-life 1 had a more varied game experience than Doom 3, I think you'll find it will.

How you figure that one out? sure had a decent story line but its still the same as any other fps shoot shit of area go to next area shoot again rince repeat until u complete it...

explain how HL2 is going to be any different?

The atmosphere in D3 is amazing especialy when you have the marines yelling down the radio screaming for help i havent had this much fun in an SP game since AVP2 tbh.

I agree we need a 3rd installment of AVP the first two games were awsome and they still are if you play them again i recently completed AVP2 all over again with all 3 species.

Then i thought AVP3 would be amazing with the doom 3 style graphics.. and mp playing as an Alien/Predator the graphics would look so cool *drools*

oh well back to d3

ps would also suggest to get the best out of d3 you must have a decent comp it really does make a difference..

pss oh yeah the multiplayer is crap to be honest takes ages to join servers and well 4 players just aint that exciting anymore but heres hoping for mods :drink:

You can simplify anything. Football is just kicking a ball around a field until it goes in the goal, but would you rather watch an office 5-a-side or Arsenal v Man U? If all FPS games are the same, why is Doom3 so scary?
Half-life had more areas, better AI and more varied styles of play (as opposed to find PDA to progress x 100). This isn't accidental from ID, they are intentionally different. Doom3 is a grown up version of Doom, and what it does it does well. Half-life 2 will be different.
