linklet. tbh, I'm a bit amazed why you need such a high powered system for a game that's (reputedly) dark half the time. I'll only be getting it after I upgrade my poota somewhere in Q1 '05, but up to now nobody really seems to like Doom3 much really. thoughts?

I enjoyed it - it's nothing revolutionary as far as FPS dynamics are concerned but it does look absolutely fantastic.

It looks bloody marvelous. It plays ok on my mid-range system (xp3000/1024ram/9800pro ) at medium video settings, and it does make you jump from time to time :)
As someone said, the monster babies are a bit disquieting somehow too.
However, it is still clear room-go into new room-clear room - get lost walk about previous 2 rooms for 5 minutes-find new room-clear room etc etc ad infinitum.
I hardly ever play sp games at all, I suppose the fact that ive played as much as I have indicates I must like it a bit :)
Do I have any urge to play the multi-player side of it ? No not much Im afraid. Rocket jumps etc are so back in the day ....

Quite decent at first but once the novelty wears off it gets a little routine. It would have been nice if they tried something new after the first 15 minutes, but you know when to expect a monster to jump out and "suprise" you because they do it the same way too many times. There's a lot of "find security key, open door, find security key....". Run of the mill FPS after the first levels in my opinion, I didn't think the graphics were particularly mind blowing because you never see them.

edit - Looks very negative here. I'd just like to say I thought it was very good at first, the sound made it genuinely scary. The trouble is I think it could have been better, they seem to have run out of ideas and played on the same theme through out the entire game.

I think the main clincher for me is the atmosphere, it genuinely scares me, more so if i turn up the volume so all other noise is drowned out = total immersion.

I'm also looking forward to possible mods in future using these graphics, but on a flipside CS:Source will be with us by then :p (very soon)

Im also very surprised it runs very smoothly on my system at medium settings 2x AA at 1024x768 with a 1.7 gig p4, Geforce 4 Ti4600 and 768 DDR ram :D

That really should run it ok at high. I'm on a P4 2.8, 512mbs and a 9800pro. For some reason high quality runs better than medium... strange indeed.

Its a great game. A lot of attention has been given to the level design, possibly at the expense of the gameplay, but it always amazes me when I see an Imp chuck a fireball, and the fireball casts shadows everywhere.

The voices in the walls are bloody scary, and I've just hit a level now where some guy is breathing. Crikey.

3000XP, 512mb, gforce 6800gt, at 1024x768 with 4xaa, 2xaf and everything turned up high.

I think I was on 4.6 then I upgraded to 4.7 - no different on either one.

Didn't even know there was a 4.9 - perhaps I should check it out.

Its a beta released specially by ATI for Doom 3, apparently for this sparkly problem that I had.
Well, not just me, you know what I mean :)

i'd have to agree with most of you and say that it does get repetetive after a while, but damn does it look nice.

runnin on high quality, 800x600 on xp2800, 1.5gb 2700 and a 9600xt and i was pleasently suprised at the framerates, rarely goes <30. Still on 4.4 cats too, every newer version i install reduces windows to a smouldering pile of shite, all my windows take like 2 seconds to appear. so if i sorted out the problms, would you recon there'd be a difference in performance?

See if you can work it out sherlock.

On the note of "is it good or not", the graphics are brilliant and it really freaks me out - i've never been genuinely scared by a game, or made to jump in my seat before.

The 5.1 surround sound really buries you in the game with atmosphere you can cut through with a knife, wondering when the next scary moment is going to happen. I remember walking down a corridor and part of the ceiling burst off (no monster) - scared? I near skittered a load of excriment.

However, it can be quite samey gameplay wise - as mentioned - "find key/pda, find door" repeat, but somehow I want to keep pushing on. Yes, it's "just another fps", but a Ferrari 360 is "just a car that gets you from A to B" - you know what I mean ;).

I'm going to disagree with the lot of you and call you all fucking retarded tbh. Doom 3 is the new king of PC games. It's everything that made the first two the best games of all time, but better looking, harder, scarier, tougher and a shitload more unsettling. I've just made it into the Executive Quarters in Alpha Labs. I made it in there at 4 in the morning in the dark. I honestly shat myself when the "Saaaaaaaave meeeeeeee" voice came out of nowhere. It runs a treat on my 9800 Pro (any stutters are HD related). I honestly rate this as probably the best PC game since Deus Ex. It has also lowered my interest in HL2 from "Yeah it'll be OK but the first one sucked, so this one probably will too" to "Half What?".

If you liked the first two, you'll fucking love this one. If you were one of those weirdos who thought there was more to life than Doom, I suggest something else. There may be a new version of Mavis Beacon Teaches Typing out.

P.S. If multiplayer stays as Carmack planned it - i.e Doom style, 4 players, one map, lots of weapons - it will be the best thing since Doom 2 DM on CIX. Rocket jumping? Pah. Eat my plasma death!

Am I the only one who still buys games? :eek7:
My mates say they buy games they have 'tried' them but they are just lying, as they have it they dont bother buying it...

I agree with Bodhi, minus the typical offensive Bodhi stuff.

The crying babies and "sudden pentagram/devil red corridor" moments still mess with my head :eek7:.

Not being able to see shit at times just adds to the pant wetting tension - a fine "chainsaw out and run at the same time in a straight line" moment.

Oh agreed G, it is scary , and very atmospheric, everyone has said that. But its nothing new in gameplay, at all, in fact it could almost be considered retro in that respect.
Kevin, Ive never blagged a game before ever, but it was a big thing this one, and was offered to me on CD rather than a download. I will still buy the game, probably on Friday , or whenever it comes out!

Half Life 2 ?

It will piss all over Doom 3 :p

If they really wanted our money they wouldn't have released it so late over here, they knew they'd lose money doing that.

My feeling is Half-life 2 won't be as atmospheric but will shit all over doom3 for gameplay.

I'm not too sure about that. methinks HL2 will ooze subtlety, where as D3 is like an in-yer-face B movie scare scene looped. or at least that's what I see in my fantasy world :)

I remember upgrading to a 486 DX2 66MHz and 16 Mb Ram. The final Doom level was so much better after that :)

I sortof agree with Bodhi, but I agree more with Big G. The graphics are amazing as everyone knew they would be, and in terms of dynamics the engine allows for a lot more flexibility, like..
the excellent computer consoles, being able to manipulate a fairground-esque grabber to pick up toxic drums, etc
..for example.
In terms of "new stuff" I don't think it really breaks the mould a great deal - a lot of the "woo thats cool" experiences are largely due to the advancements in the engine itself as mentioned above. The core of the game, as is de rigueur for FPS nowadays, is point-click-findkey-opendoor-repeat ad infinitum.

In my opinion it's more of a technology demo than anything else, which I'm sure is ultimately what ID intended. I'm quietly hoping someone will bring out an Aliens total conversion using the engine as it would be perfect for it.
