by the way guys, if youre trying to drop weight, dont fall into this "dont eat fat" bull shit.

i cant actually believe how much its marketed now. youve got adverts trying to shove zero fat food in your face on every channel. the question i ask is WHY?

simply put, if you dont eat fat you die. why the fucking hell would you not eat it? even forgetting that little fact, what problem is caused by eating undamaged fats?

it wouldnt suprise me soon if they brought out fat free butter, fat free cheese and fat free lard. everyone eating fat free foods will eventually drop dead and we can stop having this shit shoved in our faces.

biking...now with 95% more science!!!1 - FreddysHouse

here's the update I promised you guys. I decided to blog it instead of a post.
Well that's interesting. I tend to do a 20mile circle 2-3 times a week which I figured burned off about 1000cals (via online calcs). You do about same distance and get little bit more via that (1200). Altough I heard they sometimes give funny results too and aren't 100% reliable either.

re: fats. IMO there's no fooling the body how much kcal are going in and if you got a deficet you will feel hungry no matter what u eating, and ultimately if u want to loose weight u have to put up with it. Fats are very calorific but stop you feeling hungry for AGES. When was dieting the traditional friday work fry up would kill the appetite till tea time. Nothing else did that, nm all this low GI sugar carbs crap, eat porrige be hungry 2hrs later.

mmm off the top of my head I'm guessing it's because I weigh more than you do, thus it costs me more effort to do the same stuff :) still, things like online calcs and hrm's and stuff are just an indication. As long as the indication is a constant it can mean something.

If you like, I can update you with a couple of different distances during the upcoming days. I'm somewhat curious for example, if my body will output more effort if I ride say, 60km, or perhaps less when averaged per an hour. Or 15 km, etc. I will be trying to stay in between zone 2 and 3 though, eg slow haha so don't expect to see warp factor nine :D

haha will do! My first ride was really tiring as I started mid day today. It's super hot so not a good time to ride (as far as i'm aware) and almost all of it was on a hill. One part of the journey has a very steep hill which lasts about 300-400 metres :( That part is near the end of my trip so I got 3/4 of the way and had to sit on a bench for a little bit. I never had a drink with me and my throat was really sore :(

but remember! 2 third of your energy usage comes from just surviving. cutting the amount you eat is probably the easiest way to lose weight if you're above chubby.

To all the people who have mountain bikes. As you can see, the bike I purchased has disc breaks. The guy in the shop said they were Hydraulic ones iirc.

At the moment they are not as "responsive" as I'd like. To tighten them, do I twist the little bit* round?

*little bit - You have the break lever connected to the handlebars. There is a cable which runs out of the break lever. Where it connects, there is a little 'thing' which you can turn clockwise/counter clockwise.

Hydraulic disk brakes are adjusted differently to wire actuated brakes. There *may* be a little bolt or screw in your brake lever that allows you to adjust bite point, ie when the brake engages the disk. This is usually a feature on more upmarket models though.

If you are unhappy with the responsiveness, ie you feel you have to squeeze the lever too far before the brake engages, best get ye back to the bike shop and ask them to tweak it for you (because this may involve adding extra hydraulic fluid to the system).

ahh I see. Do you think I should turn the little twisty thing a bit to see what happens, or is it best to just goto them?

I'd go to the shop if you're unsure. I been doing some work on mine over the weekend and managed to have hydrolic fluid pissing all over the patio! Sounds like they might be some air in the system, but I'd get back to the shop and let them worry about it. New bike shouldn't have air in the hydrolics.

/edit nice bike btw, gl with it!

tbh I'd just drop by the shop Bahu mate. let them worry about it imo! also: new bikes can take some bedding in before everything functions perfectly.

if there is air in the system or something like that, it should take a bike shop mechanic about two minutes to fix it for you.

This is something I emailed my friend. He's been riding on and off for years and will have far better knowledge on this than me lol

I'll contact the shop either way, but I think I have the cable/mechanical disc brakes. Did some investigating :)

ooh I found this

BIANCHI

This is my bike (looks the same and says Doss 6100)

Ok just an update incase anyone was interested :p

Monday was my first ride, today was my second. I noticed if I do laps it puts a thought into my head (you're right near your house...are you sure you wanna do another lap with no water and all this heat?).

I got my 30 minutes of riding in so am happy with that, but I am currently planning a longer route. The plan is to have 1 route which takes 30 minutes to complete.

I have also been trying my best to do the Interval Training. It leaves my legs like jelly at the end but it's nice to know i'm achieving something :)

Oh, didn't realise you wanted to do interval's too (got a PM from someone else and told lots more in PMs), but a nice thing to get, if you at all listen to music while biking (should only be done in quite low traffic and safe area zones) then try using this while working out:
Workout Muse | Rapid Fat Loss Music Workouts
The "gift" contains a workout MP3 (30/90 second intervals which is aimed for beginners) it is RIGHT on, so you need to have warmed up before switching to that number.
You're supposed to sign-up for a newsletter to get it, but no check on inbound links = no need for signup.
The gift also contains a pdt about interval cardio training + a 16 week program, not read it yet so don't know about the quality, just grabbed it for the MP3 which is nice

Ive recently been trying to shed, half a stone.

tried all the sceintific bullshit you get in workout mags or off the internet. 10 reps of this, 10 reps of this, rest for exactly 32 seconds, then cycle for 10 mins, whiilst exactly, 20 grammes of protein, 15 grammes of carbs etc etc etc yada yada yada. Didnt work at all.

So I just started playing squash 3 times a week and lost the half a stone in 3 weeks and didnt change my eating habits.

Tbf losing weight isn't too hard if you know what to do and have the motivation for it.

I've shed 2 stone of fat since easter time quite easily by doing more cardio and eating less.

Believe me, I have tried all sorts of diets and programs.. Everything from starving myself to some sort of "milkshake diet", you know the ones which got everything you need and you basicly just drink em the whole day?

The most effective in terms of loosing weight fast was ofcourse the milkshake diet combined with green tea. But the one most effect, in the long run, is logically a combination of restricting your diet and go to the gym plus some sort of conditiontraining; swimming, running or cycling. With restricting your diet I mean thinking about how big your portions are, eating mostly green, like good sallads and vegetables, but also cut out from the milk. With milk I also mean stuff like yoghurt, butter, cheese etc. Its a source of fat you really dont need, plus it will slow down your stomachsystem. Also cut down on the bread if you can, or eat it without butter. Plus, if you can, do smaller meals inbetween the big ones, containing fruits and water. At first it will make you hungry as fuck but in the end you'll just have more energy. Also it will speed things up stomachwise. Also, think about trying to actually cut down on your dinner, try making it smaller or as small as breakfast/lunch. You really dont need that much food that close to sleep. At no point eat after dinner.

If you really wanna loose weight fast, add a 30-40 min walk before breakfast for insane burn of fat.

This is what made me loose 25kg a while back :)

Also, as a responce to what some people have said, the type of training that actually does burn the most fat is powerwalking. Walking slow aint gonna do you no good, but at a higher speed it certainly will. The reason for this is that if you are running, your body will go on and burn a different type of "fluid" which I cant remember the english word for. But powerwalking burns pure fat. However, running will do wonders for your lungs and heart, your whole condition will take a lift upwards.

I've heard of that. Isn't it called the Lance training scheme or something silly like that? The idea is to do a mild workout before starting your food cycle, where workout would be either a walk or a cycle or something low impact like that.

Ofc like most things in the fitness world, there are two different schools of thought regarding it, like there tend to be (at least) two differing schools of thought about anything heh. Me, I am too partial to my sleep, so I don't think it's for me :)

I dont know if its called something special, just that if you do it before breakfast, it would be optimal for burning pure fat, instead of going through the food you've already eaten that day.

And I thought about something I didnt mentioned in my post.. All of my personal trainers always tell me that loosing weight and building muscles are not seperated things. They are combined, going hand in hand. See, if you build more muscles, you burn more fat. Thats one of the main things a muscle do, burn fat. More muscles=more effective fatburning. Ofcourse you dont need to become a bodybuilder, there are ten thousand of ways to build muscles.

Never understood why people who are new to cycling go out and spend £800 on a bike.

One of my mates has just taken up cycling. He bought a bike from Tesco for £40 (half price). Its a bike ! OK so it doesn't weight 4 grammes and have tires the width of a pencil, but its a bike. It does the job. He's delighted with it.

Well I know that if you are going to take up running, buying some Tesco Value trainers isnt the best move. Getting equipment that supports and aids you is, imo, worth the extra cash than getting things which you think "will do" but actually hinder you.

I've just ran my 300th km with my Nike+ kit since May, and I'm glad I paid the extra for my New Balance trainers so my feet dont hurt for days afterwards =) (And I've lost a stone, yey )

I've always been ok with how much i weigh. I'm 6ft and about 13 stone so i'm no skinny guy.

Honestly I would say you are the perfect weight for your height, I say don't worry, not until you are in your 30s anyway ;)

I'm 6 foot 4 and 17 stone but not fat, I'm just hefty, big boned some may say :D
