I had an appointment near Hyde Park today. I arrived at the north area of the Edgeware Road that was shut off at about 10:15. I had the local radio on but nobody really seemed to know what was happening. I had to take a diversion to get to where I needed to be and in that time bombs etc were semi confirmed. It sounded like a war zone, sirens everywhere. Emergency vehicles of all types just dashing through what little traffic there was.
I arrived at my appointment, ducked in and asked if they wanted to go ahead. They pointed out that they were safe were they where and couldn't go anywhere anyway.
Driving home north out of London at about 2:00pm was surreal. Hoardes of people, I mean 1,000's just walking out of town. No buses, no traffic just roads closed all over the place and people walking calmly. When I could eventually get a signal on my moby (vodafone) my phone went nuts with calls and texts etc, peeps asking me to get in touch just to say I was OK, which was kind of scary.
I described to Mrs Yuck that what I had seen was like something out of a disaster movie, it dawned on my that this was no movie.

There is still a lot of hatred from some parts of the Arab world against Europeans for the Crusades. But they tend to ignore the fact that all of those 'Arab lands' were, until the seventh century, part of the Byzantine Empire and Christian. The Arab's invaded them and, after a few centuries, most of the populations of those countries became Muslim with some pockets of Christians and Jews left intact.

The lynchpin to the start of the Crusades was the invasion of Asia Minor (still Christian Byzantine at that time) by Muslim Turks. The Emperor asked for help, and the feudal Lords of Europe were only too happy to help themselves to new lands and conquest.

In other words: nobody is completely in the right; every nation and major religion through history has done the dirty on somebody else. They all invade other people, force their ideals on other people and then claim to be the innocent, aggrieved party.

I don't know what the answer is to the problem - but I do know we need to stop dealing in stereotypes and start dealing in facts. Find the people responsible for yesterdays murders and deal with them appropriately ... but also look at the actions of Western society that makes us objects of such hatred.
