To be able to sing on key without any real backing other than an off-beat, pseudo-spanish guitar and keep on beat - he was great.

It's sad that this is an accomplishment these days.

I went with a couple of friends and I have to say it was fantastic. I'm certainly not oblivious to the manner in which the concert greatly oversimplified aspects of a very complicated question. But in terms of sound quality, atmosphere and general performance it was probably one of the best events I've ever been to.

The usually odious Mariah Carey got booed by about half the crowd which managed to turn one of the most miserable 15 minutes of the day into one of the most magical and even Robbie Williams managed to avoid being total suckage!

Yeh I caught that Craig David piece. Was awesome, not keen on the guy but I really enjoyed the moment.

I doubt it will have any affect tbh, they wont cancel the debt, there is far too much politics involved and its a far more complex issue then just saying "OK then lets do that"

Anyway it did have the required result. Mariah Carey and the Scissor Sisters managed to pimp their new singles and Pink Floyd's albums are in the Amazon top 10. Mission accomplished!

I couldnt watch most of it, the presenters were crap tbh and I was compelled to switch off. I did catch Pink Floyd who were as good as I remember them.

Wont stop poverty, wont change a thing, but some people can feel good about themselves.

Heard Geaorge Bush isnt going to do a thing about CO2 emissions so expect more desert , more starvation and more excellent pop concerts.

And why should he? It's not like any of the developing nations such as China or India are going to do anything about theirs.

Oh and the concert was OK I guess (not really a patch on Glastonbury tho :D), Pink Floyd and Snow Patrol were awesome, but who only gave the Killers one song? And the Kaiser Chiefs playing in the U.S... eh???

Co2 emmissions have fuck all to do with poverty, besides which the science behind the Co2 theory is pretty dodgy IMO.

Thing witht he Kyoto agreement is that a lot of it is smoke and mirrors. As usual because Bush says it's in America's interest not to enter into the Kyoto agreement at the moment he gets demonised for it.

He is right in the respect if America did enter into it would be very damaging to their economy. Some of the smaller nations only export two to three products and America accounts for circa 80%-90% of it's income. So with a damaged economy America buys less and theses countries econmomy goes down the drain. Again Americas fault. Damned if they do and damned if they dont.

As for Live8. Another wasted opportunity and more massaging of some pop stars ego's. What is the real legacy of Live8 ? I can only see increased CD sales for those who performed

The US does contribute the largest amount to global CO2 levels

The majority of the worlds scientists believe global warming is real...

“The scientific community has reached a consensus,” the government’s chief scientific adviser, Professor Sir David King, told the House of Lords. “I do not believe that amongst the scientists there is a discussion as to whether global warming is due to anthropogenic effects. It is man-made and it is essentially [caused by] fossil fuel burning, increased methane production … and so on.”

Professor Sir David King, 10th March 2004. Towards A Sustainable EU Policy On Climate Change. Minutes Of Evidence Taken Before The Select Committee On The European Union, House of Lords.

Muh. Whilst not perfect(what is) or even close. I fail to see how it was a wasted event, sthe simplest example i can give is that this very forum won't engage in discussion on any topic unless it's been mentioned in The Sun or The Sport or something. If you're talking about it, it's raised awareness, surely?

I think you'll find yourself alone with the yanks on that one. T^he US as everyone knows is the biggest polluter in the world. If they cant reduce the impact of this then we are certainly going to go past the point where climate change is irreversable. Its criminal behaviour imo.

Wrt poverty, climate change will have a bigger impact on reinforcing poverty in Africa than debt relief. The richest nations in the future will be those with clean water (that might not include us.)

I'm sure I've read that North America is a net consumer of CO2 emissions (all those lovely forests in Canada), whereas europe is a net producer, so perhaps it is europe that should be looking into emissions more.

While we're at it, why not mention China and India. They're undoubtedly going to be bigger polluters than the US, and the US has a fair amount of forestry that some people think means that it is actually a net absorber of CO2.

Personally, I think the entire 'global warming' issue is massively over hyped. This planet's been around for a few billion years and has survived just a little bit more than anything we've chucked at it.

Oh, and poverty still has nothing to do with the climate. How do you know that Africa will get hotter if global temperature rises?

I don't see why we have to deflect from USA to india and China? That doesn't make any sense. Start with one? If just one of those countries starts doing something aboutl global warming then that's a good start. "they don't so why should I?" is bollocks, and should only be spewing from the mouths of retard oil barons in the southern states of America.

Where have you deducted that global warming is Over Hyped? Where do you get your facts from that go against many many top scientists? I'd be interested to know.

I can't see any reason why we should't be looking at ways of reducing global warming even if it is 'over hyped' as you say.

Yeah, it's just too bad that, while the planet's survived all the crazy ice ages and global catastrophes, most of its living inhabitants, y'know, haven't. This isn't about the "planet"s survival, as, yes, even without humanity the "planet" would do just fine. It's a little bit more selfish than that.

Edit: But, uh, I'm honestly confused as to how the subject changed so much.

Yup do a bit of reserach this planet has been through some really bad times / Extiniction Level Events. The worst was 250 million year ago which in effect killed off almost all life, life largely had to start from scratch as whole groups / types of animals were wiped out. So yes the planets been around billions of years just when ever it gets completely screwed up it has a tendency to wipe near enough all life out and starts again.

The common theory for the extiniction event 250 million years ago is that it was caused by sudden and massive increases of carbon dioxide into the air, although thats mostly speculation based on limited evidence.

Anyway to get back on topic -

Pink Floyd's Sales up 1343 percent

The Etch A Sketch theory.

China and India are a problem waiting to happen. The West wises up but cant really expect the rest to follow suit and prevent their economic development. Its a pity the development comes with such a high price.

Cos it's a natural process we shouldn't be fucking with. We're not long out of an Ice Age (relatively speaking), it stands to reason the planet would be heating up whether or not we were around. Why man has to get all self important about things and think it has the power to "end the world" is beyond me. I mean Earth has been hit by big fuckoff asteroids before now and still survived for fuck's sake, it's not like it's gonna have much of a problem with getting a fraction hotter a fraction quicker than it would otherwise have done is it?

CO2 emmisions per country is almost entirely an irrelivant figure, what is actually meaningful is the ratio of co2 produced to co2 consumed per square km or whatever - I don't know if such data exists but if it did I suspect a few things might change - I doubt the UK actually consumes more than .5-1% against the amount it produces, we have no forests or other co2-hungry natural wotsits. As JB said all those big forests in the equatorial regions are huuuuuuuuuuuuuuge co2 sinks (but ultimately, I doubt the amount they take in is increasing, especially since the majority of the planet's forests are reducing in size every day due to human erosion).

It's unreasonable to say the US must reduce its co2 output by x tonnes a year without all of the rest of the information, and Bush (who is generally a bit of a buffoon) probably has his reasons for this one.

There oil is rising in price and so more yanks are buying hybrid or even full electric cars these days, that is the kind of thing that reduces emmisions and it seems to be taking care of itself.

A guy I work with has a theory that the Earth will heal itself in the near future (he's about to retire and jests that it wont be his problem becuase he'll be a gonner by then anyway) via utter disastrous climate change (some of which is starting to happen now, but not very convincingly - yet?) that will basicly pwn the human race a bit down to more reasonable levels. It's a shame humans are too narrow minded to sort this kind of shit out themselves, ultimately I agree with the dude at my work - we'll all get pwnd by the sea and the storms and such.

It isn't so simple though. A car using an alternative fuel just moves the point of co2 emission somewhere else. Use an hybrid car, that needs charging with electricity/hydrogen - both of those need to be manufactured. A hydrogen car still requires that the hydrogen be produced - which consumes energy.

Public transport is a big con as well. Have you ever stood behind a bus and felt able to breathe deeply? Trains are less fuel efficient than the equivalent car journies, even when the train is full. They're all filthy things. Want to reduce congestion? Build more roads ffs.

I'm sick and tired of being told how to live my life by well-meaning but hypocritical yoghurt-knitters in the green parties. Some of them would, I feel, rather see the human race revert to an Agrarian society. Well fuck them, they can scrabble around in the dirt like the 'bloody peasant' in Monty Python's Holy Grail, I'll be more than happy with my 40 inch LCD and my TVR.

Hmm while we're on climate change ect. I tohught i'd throw in my 2 pence.

While climate change is a natural process ie. ocean currents changing, volcanic eruptions blah blah, who can say that we arent going to tip the balance to far so that it cant come back. The science behind the greenhouse effect is sound however its effects aren't certain, so it's a matter of wether we want to take the risk.

In my own opinion I'm not that worried about climate change as its happened in the past and the worlds recovered, however I do think we should take what ever steps we can to reduce pollution/CO2 emissions, after all we need to look at viable alternatives to fossil fuels anyway, and what abiut the other effects of air pollution such as acid rain and aggrivating breathing problems such as asthma. And to be honest we'd all rather breath clean air than smog wouldn't we.

You mean this?

He's hardly a neutral source, since, even though it is published on Indymedia, H. Sterling Burnett is funded by Exxon.

In the end I think the only viable alternative is nuclear energy. This is a clean form of energy in that it doesnt add to green house gases. The problem as always is the waste. Though I think the actual level of radiation produced is very small compared to say naturally occuring radiation. That could provide the energy to produce hydrogen for cars. We'd need to invest heavily around about now if we are to meet the shortfall in oil/gas. Not sure the green brigade will like that.
