Agree with your points but would add Timesplitters 2 and Bad Comapny 1 to that list, can't really think of any others. Halo games are fun, they aren't the ground breaking games people think they are. But they standardized half decent controls on the console for FPS's and the co-op is fun.


I disagree Halo was a monumental game for the Xbox and consoles in general, the AI was brilliant, no battle was ever the same and the co op was absolutely superb.

It was a ground breaking game for consoles and maybe FPS at the same time and you would struggle to find an FPS in the last 10 years that had the same impact as Halo.

Medal of Honor. Self-evidently, since MW has its roots in MoH, (the team that did MoH, did CoD, which became MW, which outsold every FPS ever made). Now I'm not saying MW is the best FPS ever, it isn't (although I bet it ends up near the top of this list), then Medal of Honor has been more influential and had more impact than Halo. QED.

I don't agree sorry and I doubt you will find many that think MOH had such an impact on consoles as Halo but opinions are opinions.

Today the AI on COD doesn't even come close to Halo CE, COD AI is scripted to the point it's almost on rails you know where they are go and what they are gonna do.

I played Halo a few months back and to this day the AI is still some of the best we have seen, I played 1 section 6-7 times on Legendary and every time the AI never did the same thing and used different tactics.

You never ever see that on COD come to think of it you don't see it on many games that come to mind, Metro Last Light is the last FPS I played and the AI was dumb as fuck did the same things almost every time.

Halo was simplistic, it's easy, but much more importantly it's great fun. Surely that's the point of a mass market multiplayer game?

MOH pretty much set out the modern army FPS, without it there would be no COD, Battlefield etc. Halo er, didn't.

Clearly they influenced different sub-genres. Enjoyed MoH slightly more though due to the setting; thought that is a matter of taste.

Scouse, GoldenEye was pimp. Use your imagination. There can be more to FPS games than just keyboard/mouse action.

One of my best mates worked on GoldenEye and Timesplitters and even he agrees with me that the experience is compromised because players are hobbled by gamepads. The things he could do with level design are incredibly compromised because console gamers simply don't have the range and ease of movement necessary to "live" in the levels in an enjoyable fashion.

I.E. He has to design with the controller in mind - and challenging geometry which requires fine maneuvering control is just a no-no.

This compromised control system explains the look and feel of a lot of games nowadays - they resemble "real world" architecture not only because "the masses" require an experience that's closer to film than pure gaming to make enjoyable sense of what's going on (which also is part of why they're all war-games in a traditional military sense) - they also couldn't navigate in the traditional-gamers (i.e. real geeks) complex and impossible-geometry worlds.

No wonder every FPS game I've played afterwards have felt so easy.

Half the CoD players couldn't follow the movement in that video, never mind play the game itself. Why? Because shitty console FPS's are "mass market" by nature - not niche.

The pinnacle of FPS gaming was reached long ago. Then the plebs moved in and now FPS's are, in general, dull, uninspiring, war simulators.

Sometimes they have a slight graphical or sci-fi twist - like Halo:

Halo didn't break any new ground. It was conceived of as a pure-PC game first, as a sort of rival to Half-Life. But M$ got hold of it for it's xbox launch and the multiplayer, whilst fun for a console turned dull-as-dishwater for anyone with a keyboard and mouse.

There was a reason that HALO flopped on PC. And it wasn't just that it was late out. It's because multiplayer, whilst being identical to the console version, was boooooooooooring for people with a proper control system.

Yep. I've got the winning argument. The console control system compromises game design so much that it's partly responsible for dull clone derivative FPS titles and, more importantly, entirely responsible for generic level design geometry.

Consoles have hobbled FPS's. The late 90's and early 2000's were the pinnacle of the artform and it's going to be a long time before we ever (if we ever do) get back to that.

I agree that consoles are shit for FPS games but I remember Goldeneye being quite lovely with that fantastic N64 controller. I don't remember the exact mapping but it worked exceptionally well in that game. Mind you, this was before I experienced an FPS on PC's unless you count Wolfenstein 3D, which had no uppy-downy bit (as my aunt calls Citroen's hydropneumatic suspension).

For fuck's sake. There's a direct line from Medal of Honor to Modern Warfare, the most successful FPS in history, one of the top two selling franchises in computer games full stop. The MoH template and development team created that, and other franchises like Battlefield also riffed on the same template. Even HL mods like Red Orchestra owe a direct debt to MoH. Halo was a popular franchise, but not a particularly influential one, if it was, everyone would be playing space shooters, but they're not, they're still playing war shooters. What's the top FPS pre-order on Amazon right now? This:

And even if in your strange little world it was true, that they are more influential than setting out the template for modern shooters...really? You haven't played a lot of early computer games have you?

I have no idea what you mean with system links though...

All big selling shooters owe a debt to MOH, both directly in people who worked on them and the style of game. Nobody is playing sci-fi shooters, they are all playing modern/near future combat simulators.

Absolute nonsense. Health regen? Halo didn't even have health regen until Halo 2, and the concept has been around since the 90s.

System links? What are you talking about? XBox Live? Clue is there, Halo wasn't the innovation, XBox Live was. And once again it was Halo 2 that was the online success, but it certainly wasn't the first online console FPS.

Being able to throw nades at the press of a button instead of equipping them first, something that is standard on shooters these days, who put that in? Halo, who uses it now? every shooter.

The beat down attack was first used in Halo, who uses that now? almost every shooter made since then, COD uses it.

Halo single handedly saved the Xbox if it weren't for Halo and Halo 2 the 360 would have never have been thought of, so yes Halo as a franchise influenced a hell of a lot more than MOH, lol still can't believe you said that, and still nothing from you as what particular things MOH influenced.

Halo had regenerating shields it dipped it's toe in that particular area, so yes it did influence Halo 2 which then went on to doing full health bars which influence shooters today.

Halo also introduced us to the 2 weapon load out that is used in shooters today.

I've gave you a few things Halo influenced, all you have gave is the same answer over and over again which is just dodging, I think we are done here.

I have you on ignore but I'll entertain myself with you, where did MOH give regen before Halo? Give me what version of MOH, fuck me google health regen in games and Halo CE comes up ALL THE TIME.

After you do that name me the 'upteen other games' that did it as well.

The LAN thing was for consoles not PC's, before Halo LAN wasn't really around on consoles, I think PS1 might have had it with command and conquer but for shooters and giving us 16 players I believe Halo was the first.

Used to link all the Universities PC's together in the early 90's to play games.
